SPOTLIGHT: Chasing Destiny (Silver Tip Pack, Book 2) by Megan Erickson

Chasing Destiny
Silver Tip Pack, #2
by Megan Erickson

Blurb

Some live on memories…

Almost dying during a pack uprising has a way of shaking things up. I’m no longer Mr. Laid Back now that there’s an itch under my skin I can’t scratch.

On a volunteer mission that goes beyond the walls of our compound, we enter the territory of a pack long thought dead, and find ourselves on the business end of their spears.

What I’m not prepared for is what I find within their walls—The one shifter I never thought I’d see alive, the one I’d mourned twice, the one I’d always loved. He is alive, and if I have anything to do with it, he’ll stay that way. But he’s got secrets, and exposing them could lead us to an enemy worse than the bloodthirsty undead shifters wanting to kill us all…

Excerpt

I walked toward him, not stopping until I stood right in front of him. I reached up, wrapping my arms around his painfully thin shoulders, and tugged him to me.
His face immediately dropped to my neck, and his entire body slumped into me. He nuzzled into my skin, huffing against it, while I ran my hands down his back, fingers catching on the many scars and wounds, old and new.
He clutched at my waist, pressing himself against me. He’d been needing this, starving for it, and while I wasn’t his alpha—hell I wasn’t even an alpha—I was the closest thing he had to a pack right now.
While this was helping him, it was creating all kinds of problems for me. Namely, in my pants, because my d!ck was thickening with every soft whiff of his moist breath, with every desperate press of his fingers into my skin. My teenage memories of Nash were always present in my mind, no matter how much I tried to erase them over the years, cover them up with dirt and new memories. They always rose to the surface. He’d been my first kiss, a frantic clashing of teeth and tongues along the wall near the Farm back at the Silver Tip compound. At the time I couldn’t believe he’d wanted me back, that those blue eyes of his were clouded with desire over me. Me.
In seconds, from that moment when his lips had touched mine to when he’d pulled back and gazed at me in wonder, I’d planned our whole lives. We’d be mates. He’d work on fortifying our infrastructure—he’d always been good with his hands—and I’d be my brother’s second in command. We’d live happily ever after, or as much as anyone could while surrounded by Nowere hordes.
But we hadn’t had that future. One day outside the walls, my sister was turned into a Nowere, and we’d believed Nash had been killed. Twice now—f*cking twice—I’d thought Nash was dead, only to find out he’d managed to stay alive.
He wasn’t letting me go now, my scent fogging his brain like a drug. His tongue slowly swirled along my shoulder, and I wanted to bend over that bed, let him grab my hips and take from me what he needed. This was what had drawn me away from my home, away from my pack. Like I had known in my bones that Nash was alive, and that he needed me.
Nash had always owned me, from that first kiss, and I’d be whatever he wanted me to be. If I had to f*ck him to health, I would. Of course, with Nash, I’d never be able to separate sex from feelings like I could with anyone else. But I’d choose him over my own intact heart. Maybe this was why I’d never quite felt like I had a purpose. I’d been waiting for Nash.

Review

RATING:

I’m telling you, I’m completely sucked in to this dystopian world that Megan created for her hot shifters. This is now the second book, and it’s about Bay and Nash. You’d have met them briefly from Daring Fate (my review here). Bay is Dare’s brother and Nash is Bay’s childhood friend who was ripped away from the pack. Don’t worry; it’s a standalone, although I don’t know why you’d wanna skip the first one. It’s a def top fave, just saying…

While this didn’t give me the same high as Daring Fate, this has all the right feels in all the right places. Unlike Dare and Reese from the first book who came from two different packs, you’ll learn that Bay and Nash has quite a history that was snuffed way too quickly due to circumstances. When their paths cross again, Nash is a changed man. Bay, on the other hand, just felt restless. When they met again, they can’t deny what’s always been there between them, just simmering. But the road back to each other wasn’t gonna be quite that easy.

It feels like this has more angst than the first book, and it made complete sense. Nash is a broken man who thought there was no trace of his old self in him anymore. It’s up to Bay to show Nash that his old self has always been there and that he deserved every ounce of love. What Nash went through, it squished my heart over and over. I love how Bay totally got Nash and gave him exactly what he needed which in turn got Nash giving back exactly what Bay needed. Not just that, They’re smokin’ hot together! Just saying…

And just like the first book, this got my heart pumping as the story unfolded until you reach the climax of the story. Quite a ride!

I’ve said this before about the first book and I’ll say it again. If you’re not typically a fan of PNR like I am, you have to give this series a shot at least. Megan’s always able to infuse her story with just the right amount of humor, heat and heart. She’s been doing that with her contemporary romances, and she’s doing exactly that with this PNR series.

About the Author

Megan Erickson is a USA Today bestselling author of romance that sizzles. Her books have a touch of nerd, a dash of humor, and always have a happily ever after. A former journalist, she switched to fiction when she decided she likes writing her own endings better.

She lives in Pennsylvania with her very own nerdy husband and two kids. Although rather fun-sized, she's been told she has a full-sized personality. When Megan isn't writing, she's either lounging with her two cats named after John Hughes characters or... thinking about writing.

Book Blurb:

At twenty-three, Poe Montgomery is going nowhere. He still lives in his father’s basement and spends most of his time tagging with his friends. When an arrest lands him in debt, Poe accepts the front desk job at Permanent Ink, the tattoo shop owned by his father’s best friend, Jericho McAslan. Jericho is nearly twice Poe’s age, but with his ink and prematurely graying hair, he quickly takes the starring role in Poe’s hottest fantasies.

Jericho is known for his ability to transform poorly designed tattoos into works of art, but he was once as aimless and misdirected as Poe. Wanting to pay it forward the way someone once did for him, Jericho makes Poe his apprentice and is determined to keep things strictly professional. Easier said than done when Poe makes his interest—and his daddy kink—abundantly clear.
Jericho can’t resist Poe or their intense chemistry for long. But between the age gap, tension with Poe’s father, and Poe’s best friend calling him a sellout, they’ll need to ensure they’re both on the same page before they can rewrite their rocky start into something permanent.
Piper Vaughn and Avon Gale have this to say: we hope people enjoy spending time with our characters as much as we do!

Quotes about the book:

After reading Permanent Ink, I wanted to get tattooed and go on a graffiti mural tour, but not before rereading the sex scenes. This writing duo is dynamite, and the chemistry between the characters becomes explosive the further you read. Not to be missed!

RATING:

Just to get this out of the way… that cover!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please let us just take a moment to savor the beauty of that cover... teehee...

And moving on...

Although I have some of Piper’s older books, this is a first Piper read for me. As for Avon, well, I’m a fan. Although not good for my TBR shelf and my purse, this is why I love collabs in general b/w writers because then you get exposed to more writers in a single shot.

And because I am an Avon fan, I may have inadvertently miss the itty-bitty part in the blurb about this being about ‘daddy kink’. I’m usually not a fan. I don’t go in blind with this theme and when I do, it’s usually from writers I’m familiar with and even then, there’s still trepidation.  Luckily, Avon is familiar. And really, having said all that, if you’re like me, and not quite into this theme, I’d say you’d wanna give this a go anyway.

Poe had no aim and Jericho happened to be the right person to provide him one, in every sense of the word… teehee…Jericho simply wanted to pay it forward, initially... It’s a delicious May-December affair between Poe and Jericho. There’s a 17-year difference between them; 2 very different people, 2 different generation, 2 different stages in life, but of course, ultimately, none of that matters

I really love seeing the individual growth with these 2, and consequently, how the relationship progressed. As a reader who is closer to Jericho's age, Poe provided just as much education to me. It really was like learning the language of the youth. Having said that, it was quite easy to relate to Poe, his doubts and his convictions.

Jericho is simply delish! From the ashes of misguided youth came out a beautiful man on the other side. Love his no-bs attitude, but more importantly his take-charge attitude. *giggles*

Poe and Jericho together as it turned out was a match made in heaven, both in and out of the bedroom. In each other, they found what they're searching for, inadvertently or not. Poe has a specific taste in the bedroom and it suited Jericho just fine. What you get is something combustible, whoosh!*g*

More than that, the story itself has so much heart. The emotions are real, and will resonate quite effortlessly, I'm sure. As the development of these 2 MC's unfolded, it was delectable to witness. And knowing now that there will be more collabs with these 2 authors as part of this series, I cannot be more ecstatic. Definitely looking forward to that.

Excerpt:

I stepped into the room, shoving my hands into the pockets of my hoodie, and stared appreciatively at the way Jericho’s thin black T-shirt clung to the well-defined muscles of his shoulders. We’d only crossed paths a handful of times during the years he and Landon had been friends, but I’d always thought Jericho was f*cking hot. He had to lift weights. His biceps were clearly defined under all the ink, and judging by his ass and thighs, this was not a man who skipped leg day at the gym.
F*ck, I should not be looking.
“Um.” I tore my eyes away from his ass and sucked my lower lip into my mouth, briefly catching the stainless steel hoop that pierced it between my teeth. “My dad told me to come by to see you. Said you need someone to work the front desk.”
“I do.” Jericho poured water into the coffeemaker and shoved the carafe into place before jabbing at the power button. He pivoted to face me, arms crossed over his chest. “Are you interested?”
I lifted a shoulder. “I’m here, aren’t I?”
Jericho’s dark eyebrows drew down over his hazel eyes. Despite his youthful face, silver liberally threaded his short beard and hair, the close-cropped sides revealing more gray than black. Somehow it intensified his appeal instead of aging him prematurely. I knew he couldn’t be much more than forty—younger than Landon for sure—and I loved the fact that he clearly didn’t give a f*ck about the gray. He was all natural, not trying to cover it up with that cheesy ass “Just For Men” shit. “If this is how you talk to your prospective employers, I’m surprised that gas station hired you.”
I started to reply, but Jericho held up a tattooed hand.
“This is how it’s going to be,” he said. “If you show up on time and do your work, you’ll get paid. If you do a good enough job, we can discuss an apprenticeship once I find a decent replacement.”
I tried to protest the apprenticeship thing, but he kept right on talking.
“Don’t steal anything. Don’t be rude to my customers. And don’t think I won’t send your ass packing the second you step out of line with me.” Jericho backed his words with a hard-eyed glare. “I’m giving you a chance because I like your father, and because someone helped me when I was doing my damned best to ruin my life. I’d like to pay it forward, but I won’t tolerate your bullshit. Got me?”
I tipped my chin. “Yeah, I got you.”

Early reviews about Barrel Proof:

RT Magazine - 4.5 Stars, Top Pick:

Barrel Proof is the third and final book in the Agents Irish and Whiskey series. After two books that follow the formation of a heated M/M romantic relationship, Barrel Proof starts off with a climax as secrets are revealed and the romance is tested. … Fans of the series will be equally challenged and delighted by the twists and turns Reyne takes. The book flows into a more action-oriented focus as the plot progresses, but Reyne ends the romance with just the right amount of heft to keep any reader of romantic suspense and M/M romance delighted.

Night Owl Reviews - 4.5 Stars, Top Pick:

Layla Reyne finishes her trilogy with an absolute bang! As sorry as I am to say goodbye to this fabulous pair I couldn't have enjoyed their ending more.

The Romance Reviews - 5 Stars, Top Pick:

BARREL PROOF is the emotional, high impact, AMAZING finale to the Agents Irish and Whiskey series.

Heart-breaking and heart-fulfilling, this book is the perfect finale to the series, and Layla Reyne now has a brand new reader completely addicted to her work. Without a doubt, absolutely recommended by me.

Excerpt:

Aidan snatched his hands away. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“She ordered me not to.”
“Wrong answer.” He rocketed out of the chair, snatched a tumbler off the table by the door and hurled it at the opposite wall, glass shattering.
“Aidan, please, stop.” Jamie used a bedpost to haul himself to standing, swaying. He moved toward his partner, putting as little weight as possible on the braced leg, the pain excruciating but not as unbearable as the thought of losing Aidan. “You’re going to hurt yourself.”
Aidan grabbed another glass and heaved again, keeping him back. “Why the f*ck didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t want to break your heart until I knew the whole story.”
“Too late, baby.” He spat the cherished endearment, full of spite and hatred.
The verbal punch landed right where he intended, robbing Jamie of breath. “Irish, please,” he whispered hoarsely. “I’m sorry.”
Aidan shot forward, forcing Jamie back to seated. “I trusted you, with my back and my heart, and you lied to me for months.”
“I’m sorry, I thought I was protecting you.” Jamie reached for him, and Aidan batted his hand away.
“Wrong! We protect each other. Keeping critical information from me about our case, about Gabe and Tom, about my family, is not protection. It’s lying. And me not knowing the full story means I can’t protect them or you.” His shrill voice pained Jamie’s ears.
“Baby, please.”
“Renaud came after my husband, he came after my partner, he came after me. F*ck, Jamie, he keeps coming after me, and now he’s coming after you too. And my brother and my best friend. Maybe even my goddaughter. You didn’t think I needed to know that? I could lose them. I could lose you! I told you what would happen if I loved and lost you.”
“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” Jamie stood and reached for Aidan’s arm again.
Aidan wrestled him off, shoving his chest two-handed and sending him splaying back on the bed. “I can’t, Whiskey.” Chest heaving, his harsh breaths and harsher words came out a strangled blow. “I can’t do this.”
