TOP 5 2018 Reads

Well, well, another year bites the dust. I thought my 2017 book slump was bad. Turned out 2018 was worse. From my usual over 100 books a year, it went down to roughly half of that in 2017. And guess what, that further went down to more than half again in 2018. O well... I will find my reading groove back, I'm sure... eventually...

Way fewer books or not, I've decided to still do my Top 5 picks, because why not!

(In chronological order)

1)  Sex, Not Love by Vi Keeland
An auto-read author, Vi knows how to do meet-cute in my mind. This one's no exception. Hunter and Nat, *insert heart eyes*!!!
(Review)

2) Look the Part by Jewel E Ann
Another auto-read author for me. My love for Jewel's words knows no bound.
(Review)

3) Marriage of Inconvenience by Penny Reid
The perfect conclusion(?) to the series. Dan's the man!!!
(Review)

4) Fake Out by Eden Finley
Haven't reviewed this here in our blog but I have on GR. A new-to-me author, don't know how I've not heard of Eden before. Eden completely sold me on the fake relationship trope.
(Review)

5) Riven by Roan Parrish
A superb rockstar romance in my mind. It has all the feels and all the heat.
(Review)

There you have it, folks! Having done this on the fly, I must say I'm so glad I did because remembering these top reads made me remember to appreciate and acknowledge not just these good reads but the good things in general. Despite the crappy things that have happened in the world this year, there were still plenty to be thankful for. And from a reader perspective alone, the words of these authors, the ability to offer reprieve and get lost in the worlds they create, that's a big thing in and of itself.

On that note, I wish you all a new prosperous year full of blessings and good reads!

RELEASE DAY: Across the Horizon by Aly Martinez

“Sometimes love happens when you least expect it.” That was what my husband’s mistress told me the day I found out about their affair.

I didn’t believe it until five minutes later when mouth-watering celebrity chef Tanner Reese walked up, tossed his arm around my shoulders, and told my cheating husband to take a hike. Tanner and I couldn’t have been more different. He spent his weekends at clubs, rubbing elbows with fellow A-listers. I spent mine in yoga pants with cheese boards and a glass of wine—or six. Our relationship shouldn’t have worked, but it did. That is until Tanner proved to me that even though love happens when you least expect it... So does heartbreak.

AVAILABLE NOW

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four young children. Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys cheap wine, mystery leggings, and baked feta. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person. She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a super-sized tumbler of wine by her side.

RELEASE BLITZ: The Naked Truth by Vi Keeland

TNT_Title_Black
A Standalone Second Chance Romance Novel
By: #1 NY Times Best Selling Author, Vi Keeland

TNT_FrontCover with black edge

RELEASE DATE: Monday, July 23, 2018

Synopsis: It was just a typical Monday. Until the big boss asked me to make the pitch for a prospective new client. After two years on shaky ground at work because of my screw up, an opportunity to impress the senior partners was just what I needed. Or so I thought… Until I walked into the conference room and collided with the man I was supposed to pitch. My coffee spilled, my files tumbled to the ground, and I almost lost my balance. And that was the good part of my day. Because the gorgeous man crouched down and looking at me like he wanted to eat me alive, was none other than my ex, Gray Westbrook. A man who I’d only just begun to move on from. A man who my heart despised—yet my body obviously still had other ideas about. A man who was as charismatic and confident as he was sexy. Somehow, I managed to make it through my presentation ignoring his intense stare. Although it was impossible to ignore all the dirty things he whispered into my ear right after I was done. But there was no way I was giving him another chance, especially now that he was a client…was there?

RELEASE BLITZ: The Varlet and the Voyeur by LH Cosway and Penny Reid

BANNER-ReleaseDay.jpg

The Varlet and the Voyeur, an all-new standalone in the USA Today bestselling Rugby Series from Penny Reid and L.H. Cosway is LIVE!

Cover.jpg

He kept his salacious secret for years. But soon, everyone is going to be reading about it in their morning paper…

THE VARLET (and the VOYEUR)
William Moore is a long way from home. A farm boy from Oklahoma, he’s now the most well-respected member of the Irish rugby team. But appearances are often deceptive, and Will isn’t the clean-cut, all-American good-guy everyone imagines him to be. He’s got a secret, one that will tarnish his reputation forever.
THE VOYEUR (and the VARLET)
Joesy Kavanagh is a self-proclaimed mess, but she’s finally get her shi…uh, act together. She’s set her sights on becoming a veterinarian, but there’s one teeny tiny road bump. Her living arrangements are coming to an abrupt end, leaving Joesy homeless and in need of a job to pay her way through college.
THE PLAN
What he needs is a companion to keep him on the right path.
What she needs is an apartment with free rent.
Will is convinced Joesy will make the perfect companion, since she’s brutally honest and basically ‘just one of the guys.’ Joesy is convinced she can ensure Will doesn’t succumb to his voyeuristic proclivities by keeping a scrupulous eye on him.
Except, what happens when the varlet is tempted by the voyeur, and vice-versa?!
Perchance something very, very volatile. And vexing.
The Varlet and the Voyeur is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a standalone, and is the 4th(and last) book in the USA TODAY bestselling Rugby Series.

REVIEW: Riven by Roan Parrish

Riven is here!!!

Riven

Purchase here:
Amazon || Kobo || B&N || iBooks

Blurb

Theo Decker might be the lead singer of Riven, but he hates being a rock star. The paparazzi, the endless tours, being recognized everywhere he goes—it all makes him squirm. The only thing he doesn’t hate is the music. Feeling an audience’s energy as they lose themselves in Riven’s music is a rush unlike anything else . . . until he meets Caleb Blake Whitman. Caleb is rough and damaged, yet his fingers on his guitar are pure poetry. And his hands on Theo? They’re all he can think about. But Caleb’s no groupie—and one night with him won’t be enough.

Just when Caleb is accepting his new life as a loner, Theo Decker slinks into it and turns his world upside-down. Theo’s sexy and brilliant and addictively vulnerable, and all Caleb wants is another hit. And another. That’s how he knows Theo’s trouble. Caleb can’t even handle performing these days. How the hell is he going to survive an affair with a tabloid superstar? But after Caleb sees the man behind the rock star, he begins to wonder if Theo might be his chance at a future he thought he’d lost forever.

Review

RATING:

Without a doubt, this is now the standard that I will hold all my rockstar romance reads up to.It's so beautifully written. Not only is this story of Theo and Caleb, but also, every page feels like a homage to the art of music.

I almost want to say that the music is in the centre of it all and Theo and Caleb were simply the instruments. But I won't:D This is after all Theo and Caleb's story.

Two very different individuals yet none of that matters. Music ties them together, and that's what truly matters. Something about each other calls to the other. Motivated by totally different things, yet the result is the same, love for music and eventually each other.

I believed every word that Roan used to paint these two as true artists in every sense; Theo with his insecurities and Caleb with his demons.

I can keep waxing poetic about this book, about the story, about Theo and Caleb for a long time, but I don't think I can do it justice. Best I can explain it is that it left such a visceral effect on me that it lingered on for a while.

Roan definitely has wicked ways with words... that is all...

BLOG TOUR: Marriage of Inconvenience (Knitting in the City, Book 7) by Penny Reid

MOI BT BANNER.jpg

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is available NOW!

MOI copy

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.
Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece.
Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought?

Excerpt:
Staring at his chin, because I couldn’t quite lift my eyes any higher, I cleared my throat. “Should we get ready for bed?” “Sure,” he said, his voice a rumble. Dan’s eyes were on me, I felt the weight of them. My hands came to the hem of my skirt and I hesitated, feeling winded for some reason. Sneaking a glance at him, I immediately wished I hadn’t. His gaze was watchful, but it was also unmistakably hot in a way that seemed at once both avaricious and accusatory. The vice tightened around my lungs. Kiss him! Just freaking kiss him! You want numbered steps? Fine. You kiss him- check. He kisses you back- check. Then you make out- check. Check the boxes. I licked my lips, balling my hands into fists at my sides again, preparing to follow my hasty list. But then he said, “Undress me.” My breath caught. On instinct, my eyes lifted and collided with his in much the same way our bodies had collided at the top of the stairs just moments ago. Jarring. Startling. Thrilling. This time I couldn’t look away because this time I was falling. He made no move to catch me. “What? What did you say?” His eyes narrowed, which served only to increase the intensity of his gaze from smolder to inferno. “Take my clothes off.” I stared at him, licking my lips again, and shaking my head. That wasn’t one of my steps. Lifting my chin, I moved to kiss him. He leaned to the side, evading me even as his eyes dropped to my mouth. “Take off my shirt and I’ll give you a kiss.” He’d used his naughty-secret voice. An explosion of heat erupted in my belly, and now I was hot all over. I couldn’t figure out if the heat was embarrassment or arousal or both. He didn’t give me a chance to figure it out. His hands lifted and he undid his cuffs; then they moved to the top button of his shirt. “You better take over,” he said darkly, “or else you’re not getting that kiss.”

REVIEW

RATING:

Here we are at the end(?) of the series... sigh... I suppose all good things must come to an end... or should it?... My only consolation, I actually started this series almost at the end, so just the thought of going thru the older books in the series makes me feel better already <grins>

Kat is the perfect example of "walk a mile..." It's so easy to judge her with her #firstworldproblems. But you know what, like my grandma used to say, small money, small problems, big money, big problems. Only a (very) small percentage of society might go thru what Kat went thru, but in the end, whether you're in that strata of society or not, it's not hard to understand that at the end of the day, Kat is just Kat. A woman who has to deal with family crisis, tackle mental health issues, just want to be a good friend and find love with the right man.

Dan couldn't be more perfect. Perfect for Kat, perfect book boyfriend. He's such a well-rounded character. He had his own insecurities. He overcame his challenges. And most importantly, at the end of the day, he was able to love Kat the way she needed to be loved. He was good with his family. He was a good friend. Dan... is the MAN! Sigh...

"He felt like a life raft. Like a strong, steady, safe harbor in the tempest of the last twelve hours. Or maybe in the chaos of my entire life."

It's delish to see how things unfolded for these two. Yes, Kat might challenge you a bit with her inner thoughts, well at least for me, but luckily, we got Dan's POV to balance things out. And of course, since this is Penny, you're def in for a few chuckles. Oh, oh, oh, I'll be totally remiss if I don't bring up their first kiss. One of the best I've read, I'm telling you!

If you're familiar with the series, then you know that friendships play a big part. After all, each book in the series feature each of the women in this tight-knit circle (did I just make a pun there?). If I didn't fully appreciate it in the first book I read in the series, then here, I fully got it. Just thinking about the friendship these women have, it reminds me of the women in my life who I called friends, friends I've known for like half my life or longer. And with that thought, it made me appreciate more how Penny worked it in. So far that alone, I thank you, Penny.

Now if you're not familiar with the series and you're a fan of romcom with a touch of nerd and a whole lotta' heart, you definitely cannot skip this series.

PS. Shout out to Dan's mom, that is all:D

BLURB

Homer Carnegie. Admit it—you know my name. Your kid’s got my e-trading card. Your husband sits up straighter when I stroll onto the TV screen. He knows I’m going to crack the bat and save the day. Even your grandma’s jonesing for my autograph. But women my age? They’re the worst. Or would that be the best?
It’s not my fault they line up at the door. They catch my balls all right, two at a time sometimes, or even three. Believe me, everybody wins.
At least they did—until the video. I heard TMZ paid a million for a bird’s eye view of Homer on his A-game. The only folks who didn’t watch with eager eyes? Red Sox management. They want me benched, or worse, shipped off to rehab.
It’s a long story, what happens next. How I end up on a boat, bound for the world’s most remote island: Tristan da Cunha. Just a speck of dust in the Atlantic.
Except my heart is there.
I don’t know that when I step onto the boat.
I don’t know a lot of things.
What I’ll covet…
What I’ll lose…
