Excerpt:

“We ate at the hotel.” Her lips twisted to the side. “Mind if I stick some stuff in my bag for later?” A tiny wrinkle formed between Ian’s eyes, just below the long sweep of his black bangs. “There will be lots of food available later too. But…” he shrugged, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees “…take whatever you want.” Jersey glanced over her shoulder at the food and the three other men in the room. She decided to wait a little while before shoving as much as possible into her bag like a free-for-all. “Thanks.” Jersey returned her attention to Ian. “So … you’re a singer. Like … are you a big deal?” Every word she spoke seemed to feed his level of happiness. “Well …” He rubbed his chin, twisting his lips. “We play music. People like to listen to our music. But no … it’s not a big deal. We’re not saving lives or anything like that.” She eyed him with suspicion for a few seconds. That smile of his didn’t feel worthy of complete trust. “Um … what exactly do you need me to do? What’s my job? They already took Chris. Will that big, bearded guy come for me too?” Jersey couldn’t remember his name. “No.” Ian stood, pushing his elbows out from his shoulders, twisting side to side. “Tonight you are just going to watch the concert from backstage. Tomorrow night you’ll sell merchandise.” “Drugs. You mean drugs, don’t you?” Ian paused his stretching, letting his arms fall limp to his sides. “Merchandise—T-shirts, posters, keychains, phone cases, hats, guitar pics …” “To who?” “Fans.” Ian grinned. “Okay. I might have understated all of this to you … can you name a famous singer? Old or new. Doesn’t matter. Just a famous singer.” “I had a foster parent who used to listen to Josh Groban.” Jersey gnashed her teeth, still feeling so much anger. Dena wasn’t just a foster parent; she was Jersey’s friend. “Okay. Well, Josh has sold millions of records, and he’s a huge star in his genre of music. Thousands of people pack venues all over the world to see him sing live in concert. And they sell merchandise of his at those concerts.” Jersey gazed unblinkingly at Ian as he scratched his jaw. “Well, I sing a different genre of music, but I, too, travel the world, singing to sold-out concert venues, andI have people who sell my merchandise at these concerts.” Jersey dropped her bag to her feet and planted her fists on her hips. “Listen, Coop. Stop talking down to me. I’m not an idiot. I know what a concert is. But earlier today you didn’t say what you did or what the job was you were offering. You bought a homeless person a hot dog and offered her a job. Of course, I’m going to think something sketchy might be involved.” Tipping her chin up, she held her breath to puff out her chest, pretending the recent revelation of Ian Cooper being a famous singer didn’t faze her one bit. Inside, Jersey’s heart hammered into her ribcage, and her mind reeled trying to figure out the day’s events. “Coop?” His lips twitched into a tiny grin. “It’s short for Cooper.” “Clearly.” Ian chuckled. “But my name is Ian. Everyone calls me Ian.” “I busted the nose and jaw of a kid named Ian. He tried to stick his c0ck in my a$$. I’ll call you Tom, Dick, or Harry, but I’m not calling you Ian because that makes me want to physically harm you.” Ian’s eyebrows shot up his forehead as his head whipped back a few inches. “Coop it is.”

Review:

RATING:

Jewel has done it again. Given me a book with a cryptic enough blurb, one that’s unique, full of emotions and jaw-dropping moments. Dunno why this didn’t occur to me before. After reading this book, I now dub Jewel queen of complicated romance. I have a few titles accorded some authors in my head. Jewel officially now has a title in my head.

As well, after having read this book, I realized I haven’t read Jewel in a while and it occurred to me that my Jewel well is parched and needed refilling. Am I glad to have refilled that well with this book? Frankly, I don’t know. It feels quite different from the past Jewel reads, but then again, when has she given me the same stuff. I almost see this as emo dark romance with suspense. I’m all for dark romance. And when you add emo, it does add gravity to the emotions that’s harder to shake off.

This book has dark themes. It’s not an easy read. I personally feel it should have content warning. It may not be for everybody. Jersey’s past is harsh. She has a lot of rough edges, as in a lot. Hard to love her at times even with her best intentions. She’s as human as can be.

Next to Jersey, Ian is practically perfect. And turns out he is, even with his greatest secret, I’d say.

One thing I’m also realizing now is the PTSD-inducing feeling that Jewel books is evoking out of me. Not to trivialize the real condition, but the more Jewel books I read, the more I find the need to brace myself because I honestly don’t know what kind of emotions Jewel will evoke out of me. From the first page, I’m already wondering when the other shoe will drop. In this case, I was constantly wondering what moves Jersey will make. I was constantly wondering why Ian does what he does and feels what he feels. I was constantly wondering why other people’s motives matter as much. I was constantly wondering why other people are being helpful. That’s how anxious she made me feel. Does that take away something from fully enjoying the ending? A tad, but then it gives me a good excuse to go back and see things from a different light, I suppose.

One thing I didn’t wonder about is Jersey’s motives. In as much as I don’t agree with half the things she said and did, I understood it as best I could. Her past shaped her; can anyone really blame her? The growth in her is a sight though in the end.

And as far as Ian is concerned, after all that’s said and done, my heart simply cracked. No two ways about it… sigh…

If there’s anything, I just wished that some things were revealed sooner to give me more time to enjoy the pleasurable parts rather than constantly questioning things in my head. In my head, I started asking myself if this is really romance that I’m reading. But that’s more on me.

Jewel, what are you doing to me?!?!?!

(PS. Hope I can ask her that face-to-face soon enough. Maybe? If the book and travel gods convince Jewel that she can spare time for a fan in a coffee shop over cinnamon rolls. Maybe? *crossing fingers* HAHAHAHAHA)

REVIEW: Look the Part by Jewel E Ann

Look the Part, an all-new “emotional and breathtaking” standalone from

Jewel E. Ann is available NOW!

LookThePart Full

Synopsis:

Flint Hopkins finds the perfect tenant to rent the space above his Minneapolis-based law office.
All the T’s are crossed and I’s dotted on Ellen’s application. Her references are good. And she’s easy on the eyes.
Until …
Flint discovers Ellen Rodgers, Board-Certified Music Therapist, plays music. Bongos, guitars, singing—not Beethoven administered through noise-cancelling headphones.
The cut-throat attorney serves up an eviction notice to the bubbly, constantly-humming redhead who's too sexy for her own good. But luck is on Ellen’s side when Flint’s autistic son, Harrison, takes an instant liking to her. A single dad can’t compete with guitars—and rats. Yes, she has pet rats.
This woman …
She’s annoyingly happy with a constant need to touch him—adjust his tie, button his shirt, invade his space, and mess with his mind.
Still …
She must go.
Their lust-hate relationship escalates into something beautiful and tragic. This sexy, romantic-comedy explores the things we want, the things we need, and the impossible decisions parents and children make to survive.

“Look The Part is my new top favorite from the inimitable Jewel E. Ann. Delightfully quirky, funny but deeply emotional, Look The Part was pitch perfect. I loved everything about this five-star read!” - USA Today bestseller Ella James

Excerpt:

There’s something thrilling, even a little forbidden, about a man in a perfectly-tailored suit. Flint Hopkins wears the hell out of a three-piece suit. Not a single wrinkle. Not a hair out of place. Not a scuff mark on his shiny shoes. His lips move, but all I hear is “I wore this suit for you today” as his hands make their rounds: caressing the buttons on his jacket, twisting his cufflinks, and adjusting his tie. It’s sophisticated fidgeting. “You said you’re a therapist, not a music teacher.” Observant men are sexy too. “I did. And I am. Specifically, I’m a music therapist. Do you want me to explain what a music therapist does?” “No. I just want you to look for a different space to rent. I’ll give you two weeks.” He turns and makes it out the door in three long strides. My toes are on his heels in seconds, chasing him down the stairs. “Wait? You’re evicting me?” “I’m giving you notice.” “Notice? You’re kicking me out for what? Doing my job?” “Preventing me from doing mine.” He pushes through the door at the bottom of the stairs and makes a sharp right. “Hey, Boss, how’d it—” Amanda’s gaze moves from Flint to me as I follow him into his office. “Hi, Amanda. Would you happen to have the name of a good real estate attorney? I may need to sue my landlord for wrongful eviction.” “Um …” Flint turns, halting my forward momentum a second shy of slamming into his chest. “Shut my door, Amanda.” His eyes narrow. I don’t care how hot this guy looks in a suit. I won’t recoil under his glower. “Please leave it open, Amanda. I may need you to be my witness.” Arrogance tugs at his mouth. “A witness?” “For when you threaten me.” He unbuttons his jacket and takes a step back. A whoosh of oxygen leaves my chest like it’s attached to him. The man has an air of confidence and mystery about him that commands attention. When he turned around to face me a few seconds ago, I sensed the slightest agitation in his narrowed eyes and flared nostrils, but not anymore. It’s not hard to imagine Flint Hopkins in a courtroom—cool, calculated, ruthless. “You seem to be an intelligent person, so surely you can see how the noise level of your profession could distract me from doing mine. I think sharing space with other businesses is not a good idea. You need a building of your own or maybe you should work out of your house.” “I live in an apartment. And I’m sorry, Mr. Money Bags, but I don’t have the cash flow to buy or rent a building all to myself. You’re an attorney. How often are you even in your office? And when you are, what are you doing that requires complete silence? Charming snakes? Narrating audio books?”

RATING:

Let me say it now, I am such a slave to Jewel's words. I seriously don't have enough words to describe how much I love her work. This one is no exception.

It's Ellen and Flint's story. No, it's Ellen, Flint and Harrison's story.

The blurb gives you a good idea what you're in for. But while, yes, it is rom com, one thing you need to understand, if you're not familiar with Jewel's work, is the emotional gravitas she infuses her work with. Her words and stories can stay with you for days, I'm just saying.

'When people touch, they no longer feel like strangers. It's a feeling. When humans share feelings, they connect on an intimate level. It's why I love music. It can go deeper than words. Rhythm is the heartbeat of your souls.'

I can't even begin to describe how much I love Ellen and Flint. In my head, I start breaking down what I love about these two and I stall. They're so life-like in my head, I could very well be talking about real people. They're relatable, fallible yet strong, flawed yet perfect... really just like anyone of us.

Their dynamics is perfect- right amount of angst, perfect amount of humor, enough dose of heat, and plenty of heart.

'But you can move on and be a good person who fights the good fights. It's extraordinarily hard to acknowledge our imperfections, especially when they cause something so devastating... but you are in fact just like everyone else. You're' human, Flint'

Harrison definitely deserves a special mention. And so does the father-son dynamics... sigh...

I've highlighted so many parts in this book that spoke to me, and captures what I love about it, yet no satisfying words come. I really wish I have the right words to describe things that would do this book justice.

Just know that when I finished this, or any of my past Jewel reads, I walk away not just with a story that leaves an indelible mark in my mind but life lessons as a whole. Let me put it this way, whenever I decide to get another tattoo, Jewel's words will be there somewhere. That's how much I love her words.

When Life Happened, an all-new standalone romance from

Jewel E. Ann is available now!

WLH Full

When Life Happened by Jewel E. Ann

Publication Date: June 5th, 2017

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Parker Cruse despises cheaters. It might have something to do with her boyfriend sleeping with her twin sister.
After a wedding day prank involving a strong laxative, that ends the already severed relationship between the twins, Parker decides to grow up and act twenty-six.
Step One: Move out of her parents’ house.
Step Two: Find a job.
Opportunity strikes when she meets her new neighbor, Gus Westman. He’s an electrician with Iowa farm-boy values and a gift for saying her name like it’s a dirty word.
He also has a wife.
Sabrina Westman, head of a successful engineering firm, hires Parker as her personal assistant. Driven to be the best assistant ever, Parker vows to stay focused, walk the dog, go to the dry cleaners, and not kiss Gus—again.
Step Three: Don’t judge.
Step Four: Remember— when life happens, it does it in a heartbeat.

Excerpt:

“You … you tried to seduce me.” Anger fueled her fight, overriding how terrified she felt being feet from naked Gus. He laughed. That fed her anger even more. “I wasn’t seducing you. I was making a point.” He slipped on a white T-shirt. “Bullsh!t. I was there.” “Precisely. Then you should know that I wasn’t seducing you.” He grabbed her shoulders and steered her away from the entrance to his closet. She turned, relieved to find him dressed. “I felt you.” Her eyes narrowed. He smirked. “You did, did you?” Heat spread up her neck and burned her cheeks. Discussing Gus’s erection in his bedroom with Sabrina out of town qualified as the most inappropriate conversation she had ever had. “You’re such an a$$. Just tell me why?” Twisting his lips to the side, he narrowed his eyes. “You’re young. You think the world is so black and white. In your fairy-tale world, love is a magic wand spreading trails of glitter and granting happily ever afters.” Parker stepped closer, knowing the lion could pull her into his den. “I don’t believe in fairytales.” “No?” He shrugged. “Then I guess I made my point.” “I don’t get your stupid point!” Her fingernails dug into her hands as she clenched them. Gus leaned forward, putting them at eye level. She held her ground, even though his proximity made her body tremble. “Someone cheated on you. And you’re so f*cking mad about it because you can’t understand it. But love is an emotion that resides in your head and your proverbial heart. It has to be nurtured to grow or it dies. But … desire … it’s instinctual. Physical. Carnal. And when it wants its way, your brain shuts down and the only heart you hear is that blood-pumping organ in your chest. A slave to your desire, readying your body to do one thing and one thing only …” He leaned into her ear and whispered, “Get. Off.” August Westman proved he was the devil. Parker became the worst possible version of herself in his presence. He drugged her with his words, pulled her under with his confidence, and stole her innocence with a whisper.

Review

RATING:

“Today is my favorite day”

Me: This book is my favorite Jewel’s book.
Inner Me: But you said that about the last book.
Me: Yes, that was the last book.

One thing is almost guaranteed for me when it’s time to write a review for one of Jewel’s books. It’s hard. Why? Because to make sense of the jumble of emotions that she makes me feel takes time, and because I definitely don’t want to give anything away. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. It’s best to just dive in with any of Jewel’s books. So how does one review this, how do I review this? Very delicately, I suppose.

For starter, as much as I love a sculpted torso or a bearded model on the cover, I love how Jewel bucks the trend and does her own thing with her covers. If you don’t believe me, go back to everyone of her book and you tell me.

Another thing, which I’ve already said before but will say it again (yup), Jewel’s blurbs alone are worth noting. If you don’t believe me, go back to everyone of her book and you tell me.

On to this book, to put succinctly, it’s Parker’s journey to finding true love. How she gets there, you just need to read. No matter what she does, I doubt you won’t fall in love with her the same way her man fell in love with her. She’s funny and quirky. She’s complex in her simplicity. She’s strong even in her moments of weakness.

And to put it simply, the man in Parker’s life will make you feel all kinds of things. The how and why, you just need to read.

Reading this is really almost like an experience. As Parker went through her moments, you can’t help but feel and think a certain way. Like… As you get older, you realize things stop being merely black and white, whether you want it or not. Sometimes the right decisions end being the wrong ones, and the wrong choices end being the right ones. Sometimes, life catches you off guard and changes in a blink of an eye. And sometimes, it really is best to just let go and let things flow... let life happen…

Jewel cracked my heart open with this one. Then she put it back together, but along the way, she wrung the hell out of it then she massaged it at the end. I laughed, I swooned, I cried, and boy did I cry, then I smiled.

Top 5 2016 Reads

According to Goodreads, I've read 115 books in 2016. Not bad, eh? Also, according to Goodreads, my average rating for the year was 4.4 out of 5 stars. Pretty good year, eh? So to narrow down my top read to just 5, well, hard, right? So...

In no particular order, here they are. These are the books that just wowed me and made me feel. And some of them even gave me a book hangover...

1) The Bellator Saga (Books 1-5) by Cecilia London

Jack and Caroline have earned their top spots in my most fave H&h shelf. This is one read that packs a punch, and I don't mean that lightly. Given the current American political landscape, what's meant to be dystopian meta-fiction read scarily feels contemporary now. This is a saga, alright, not a series, a saga. The way this books gripped me, I'm at a loss for words sometimes. The emotions this books wrung out of me, I can't fully describe it. And it's not even finished yet!!! The last installment is coming out in 2017 and I'm already nervous, eek! (Reviews: 1-3, 4, 5)

2) Retrieval Duet by Aly Martinez

Aly Martinez writes it and I read it, as simple as that. This duet is all about suspense, love, heat, and all kinds of emotion. If you're an Aly fan like me, you won't be disappointed. If Aly is not on your radar, what are you waiting for? (Reviews: 1, 2)

3) This Isn't Over, Baby by K Webster

This is the 3rd book in the War & Peace series and not a standalone. This is one dark series, and I'd say this is the darkest and twisted of all, so far. The first 2 books are both 5-star reads as well, but this one, this one pushed all kinds of buttons but I gobbled it all up. As wrong as this may sound, this is all kinds of delicious in all its darkness. That's KA for you! (Review)

4) Scarlet Stone by Jewel E Ann

The latest release by Jewel. This story just moved me. One of the strongest h's I've read of late. I'll always be grateful that I came across Jewel's work because to date, I have not been disappointed. I know I don't need to read her blurbs to get me interested in her books but I do because I love how she hooks me in. I keep saying this, Jewel should be on people's radar some more! (Review)

5) Preppy: The Life & Death of Samuel Clearwater, Part 1 by TM Frazier

TM is not called the #evilginger for nothing. This is the most recent book in the series that I would say pretty much all the fans of the series have been anticipating. You can't read this without reading the first 4. Yes, you have to meet King and Bear, and now of course, Preppy. These fellas and their lives are just so crazy and you'll love them and it for that. (Review)

Guess, that's it... I'll say it again, 115 books with an average of 4.4/5 and to narrow it down to 5 (well, sorta, considering I lumped series... and... you'll see😛), well, that was hard!

On to another year!

REVIEW: Scarlet Stone by Jewel E Ann

sscover

Title: Scarlet Stone
Author: Jewel E Ann
Genre: A romantic suspense standalone
Release Date: December 10th, 2016

Synopsis
“My name is Scarlet Stone, and my biggest fear is that someday I will find what I want most in life, and it will be impossible to steal.” What happens when life just stops? When one moment makes you question your entire existence? Scarlet Stone is a third-generation thief who has everything: a doting fiancé, a spacious London flat, and a legitimate job offer. In a single breath, everything becomes nothing, and she finds herself on a plane to Savannah, Georgia in search of the meaning of life. After securing a six-month lease for a beachfront house on Tybee Island, Scarlet changes the way she looks, thinks, eats—basically her entire outlook on life. She needs peace, but what she gets is a housemate who looks like Thor, acts like a warden, and smells her proximity like a Bloodhound. Theodore Reed is a carpenter and perfectionist with a body built of steel, a black, hollow heart, and a hunger for revenge. He doesn’t like company, girly-smelling crap, and British accents. He resents every breath she takes. She’s fascinated by his every move. In time, they discover their coexistence is toxic, their physical attraction is electric, the secrets they keep mean the difference between life and death, and the only truth they share is that everything is a lie. “Over eighty-five percent of the world's population believes in a higher power, yet, very few people believe in miracles.” Do you believe?

REVIEW

RATING:

There’re a few things I learned right from my first Jewel read. First, her blurb always has the right hook; at least, for me. Second, her blurb only touches the surface of the story, in a good way. Third, expect the unexpected with her characters….

In Scarlet Stone, I got all of the above, as usual. And with what this book took on, what I got is one exquisite read… At this point, I cannot be any more in love with this book… SIGH…I just know my review will not do this book or how I feel about this justice. It's taken me a long time to begin with writing this, just because... SIGH...

From the first few lines, I knew I was gonna be in for one distinctive ride. Immediately, I wanted to know Scarlet’s story. Scarlet moved far away from home to… hmmm… to escape? To search? To discover? To learn? And as soon as she got there, she meets these interesting people and most interesting of all is Theo. Immediately, there's this caustic energy between them that manifested in the most electric way.

As the story opens up, you learn Scarlet's true purpose. Theo was the unexpected "monkey wrench" in Scarlet's plan...

This is really best read by just diving in. I feel like if I keep talking about the story itself, I'd give it all away bec I won't be able to help myself and I'll just keep going. So I'll just say this. All along, what I really can't shake off is how this story moved me. From Scarlet's journey to Theo's pain to this bond that formed between them. Practically every other line causes pause for contemplation.

Scarlet will definitely go down in my reading history as a top fave h. Everything about her quietly screams strength. It's the kind of strength I know I would aspire to possess should I find myself in any tough situation. Her pragmatic approach is spiritual on its own, if that makes sense. And more so, as typical with Jewel's h, she's quirky and hilarious, appropriately non-apologetic. As far as I'm concerned, she alone gets all the stars I can give.

Theo was easy and difficult to love all at once, the kind of H you want to hug and punch at the same time, then hug again. It's frustrating and endearing how much he fought Scarlet off. Despite his gruffness, you get a sense of a man who feels quite a lot. I think Scarlet made him shine and in doing so, I fell just as hard for this broken man.

The story took turns that I didn't expect. At first, I thought it was going to distract me from Scarlet and Theo's story, but eventually, I understood. It's a story about love, no matter what the future holds. By the end of the journey, there was the love a parent has for a child, the love a child has for a parent(s), there was the love that's true but not meant to be, and then there was the love that was meant to be regardless of anything and the love that you know can and will transcend time.

I want to say that this is unlike any of Jewel's books, but then again, every one of her books is really unlike the one before... I truly feel Jewel's books are like hidden gems that really shouldn't stay hidden. That's just not right. So if it's still not clear at this point, I highly recommend this.

Top 5 Romance Book Covers

I've talked about cover models in my romance reads, but I do want to point out that I'm not that shallow (I think) that those are the only things that catch my eyes. I also pay attention to covers that capture my attention artistically. No, there are no buffed tattooed dudes in these covers, but something about them just speak to me. What can I say, I guess I'm a cover whore... teehee...

Just as the case with those cover models, when I find a unique cover, it's enough that I pay more attention to the book, to see what it's about... Again, whether I buy it or not, and eventually read it or not, that's an entirely different discussion. But as you can see, I've read 4 of the 5 of the books you will see, and needless to say, I own them. So all I'm saying is that it makes a diff...

1.) Beg by CD Reiss
So began my love for all things CD!

VIA

2.) Tragic by JA Huss
During my initial foray to NA. Not only did the cover capture my attention, JA Huss also caputred with me her characters and introduced me to a new breed of H's:D (FYI: the newer edition has a different cover now)

VIA

3.) End of Day by Jewel E Ann
This is a trilogy that has such unique characters and plot.

VIA

4.) This is War, Baby by K. Webster
This is one dark read that got me on tenterhooks. There is something about the cover that just felt innocent and sinister all at once.

VIA

5.) In Me an Invincible Summer by Ryan Loveless AND Stygian by Santino Hassell
Ok, this is kinda cheating but I seriously couldn't decide O.o
I haven't read these yet even though I own them. I did fall in love with the covers the moment I saw them.

VIA

Hmmm... the more I look into my Goodreads shelf, the more I realize that there's quite a bit of them with covers that just grab me. I'm sure there'll be more that may surpass the ones above. Regardless though, it doesn't mean that I will love the above covers less.

Aren't they all purtee?

What grabs your eye when you look at book covers?
