About THE TIME IN BETWEEN (The Magdalene Series #3):

After a painful loss, Cady Moreland is coming to Magdalene to start the next chapter of her life. A chapter that began eighteen years ago but had a heartbreaking ending. The time in between was full of family and friendship, but Cady could never get the man she fell in love with all those years ago out of her heart.

Coert Yeager has learned to live without the girl who entered his life right when she shouldn’t and exited delivering a crippling blow he never would have suspected. The time in between was full of failing to find what he was missing…and life-altering betrayal.

But when that girl shows up in Magdalene and buys the town’s beloved lighthouse, even if Coert wants to avoid her, he can’t. A fire in town sparks a different kind of flame that won’t be ignored.

As Cady and Coert question the actions of the two young adults they once were thrown into earth-shattering circumstances, can they learn from what came in between and find each other again?

About Kristen Ashley: Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorize and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing's changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.

  EXCERPT:

As he slowly closed the door behind him and moved his eyes to look through the room, taking it in, she watched them get wide. They dropped to her and his amusement was clear. Not only radiating from his gaze but twitching his lips. Another unusual—and unacceptable—reaction. He thought this was funny. She hoped like fuck she had the opportunity to prove him wrong. She crossed her arms on her chest and slightly put out a foot, like she was about to start tapping her toe. In the wrap dress she wore, she knew this opened the overlap, not exposing anything, but the promise for him was impossible to resist. His attention dropped to her legs. “In the playrooms,” she began with a snap, and his gaze cut to hers, “I want eye contact. Unless otherwise instructed, you should not only feel free to look me directly in the eyes, if I’m in your line of sight or I’m not giving you something that your body’s natural reaction would make it difficult to meet my gaze, I require it.” She stood there staring as he did nothing but dip his chin in acknowledgment. Cheeky. Exceptionally cheeky. Fabulous. “Unless I’ve asked for their silence or for them to ask for leave to speak, I also require my toys to respond when they’re spoken to. Even if it’s only a ‘yes, Mistress,’ or ‘no, Mistress.’” His stance relaxed, like he was settling in at the beginning of a show he found vaguely intriguing, and his deep rumble of a voice bounced like boulders through the room. “Yes, Mistress.” Christ, even his voice declared his challenge. “Excellent,” she allowed. “Your name?” “Olivier,” he answered. French. Also unusual, at least in this country. And interesting. She liked it a great deal. She studied him. He let her, holding her eyes. “I’m Mistress Amélie,” she eventually informed him. “I know. You got a lotta fans out there…Mistress.” The hesitation over him saying “Mistress” gave less of the impression he was testing her and more of the strange impression the word was unpracticed when, with any experienced sub, it would slip right off their tongue. She made no comment to that. “There are things we should go over,” she remarked. “Right,” he stated, his big body adjusting again, now like he was settling in further, intent on giving her the same attention he would a flight attendant who gave the safety address. That being no more than a courtesy. She fought the shiver his actions created but allowed the irritation. “Your safe word is kitten,” she stated. “Yes, Mistress.” “You’re open to any kind of play,” she went on. “Yes, Mistress.” “It’s important and now’s the time to share should there be anything you wish me to shy away from, Olivier. Especially as this is the first time I’ve played with you.” Something in his eyes flashed. Blue eyes that were the color of nothing and everything. Not sky. Not sea. Not midnight. A pure blue that only existed in the unchartable depths of a rainbow. She felt that flash snake up between her thighs, taking residence in her womb. He wanted this conversation done so she would play with him. He wanted the preliminaries over so they’d get to the good stuff. He wanted her. She stared into those blue eyes and for a moment felt mesmerized. For God’s sake, Leigh, she berated herself in an effort to pull it together. Rainbow? “Olivier,” she prompted. “I’m open to anything,” he confirmed.

She turned back to him. “You seem to have a good deal of stamina.” “Amelie…Mistress, I don’t think you’re getting’ that I seriously find you not hard on the eyes.” She bent closer, as intended for this part of their session, some of her fair falling on his chest in another caress. She did this letting her amusement show, if not all of the emotion she felt at his compliment. “I wonder, monchou, if you think you can butter me up with compliments.” “I don’t know. Maybe. Though not sure why I’d bother since I didn’t give you one and you just made me shoot a huge-a$$ load the like that have never come from my c^ck.” “And he gives another compliment,” she said through a smile. “You earn it, I’ll say it, he replied, his lips twitching. “That is, if I’m physically capable of speech.” She was still smiling when she reached out a hand and delicately traced circles around his nipple. His eyes darkened. Her good humor increased. “You’re of course aware I should do something about you being so audaciously cheeky.” Another darkness crossed his face. “What?” “I shouldn’t allow you to be cheeky with me.” “Cheeky?” “Impudent,” she explained. The look fled. “You mean, in uppity, hot-chick speak, a wise-a$$.” Amelie couldn’t help it, she laughed softly. “She’s got a pretty laugh, too, to go with that pretty accent,” he murmured and she saw his eyes on her lips. I could get lost in this one, she thought. Lost and never found.

Rock Chick Rendezvous 2016 - Seattle

This is a bit of a belated post but I cannot cannot not do a post on this.

If you happen to read through my posts, you'll see that I'm a huge Kristen Ashley (KA) fan. And one of my DS also happens to be one, a bigger one in fact than me. When a friend on Goodreads happen to have attended KA's Rock Chick event in Edinburgh this last summer, he happened to mention the one happening this Sept which incidentally was the last of the year.

With a bit of last minute planning, sister and I made it to the Seattle event that occurred Sept 16-18. I've been to 1 book signing before but this is a whole lotta' different experience. And what a blast it was!!!

First, there was the meet-and-greet on Friday night. It was a casual event held at the bar area where KA was just mingling with the different tables or groups of people.

Then on Saturday, there was a book signing during the day.

... while waiting for KA to arrive... O, there she is (behind us)
Rebecca Zanetti was also there for the whole weekend so she was of course a part of the book signing, whee!!

Of course DS and I have to get the customary group pix.

Saturday evening was the big event, where we got to par-tay with KA and the rest of the Rock Chicks!!

... just as we were leaving our hotel

The Rock Chicks milling around KA on the dance floor

Gotta have a selfie with KA while on the dance floor!
... at the photo booth!

What a fun night!!!

Then of course to make it even sweeter, here comes the swag!

My personal bonus, because it's my birthday next week, DS got me these as presents as well, yay!!

Not only did I get to meet KA and Rebecca, I also got to see other Rock Chicks, chatted with a few and just be surrounded with other booklovers. And most importantly, I also got to spend time with DS who live on the other side of the coast.

And, really, KA not only gave me stories I love, female characters that are adorable and male characters worth swooning for, she also gave me and DS a memory to last us a lifetime. So if you think about it, my/our love for KA and her books is like a gift that keeps on giving.

For that, I thank you, Ms. Ashley, from the bottom of my heart.

Fun times all around!!!

TOP 5 Romance Heroines

A (looong) while back, I did a Top 5 BBFs (Book Boyfriends). I can easily do a new edition of that, no doubt. But then what's the point of Top 5, right? Might as well make it Top 50 or 100, or... I can keep going.

I thought why haven't I done one for romance heroines. Granted, just like most women, I'm hero-centric when it comes to my romance reads. BUT the heroine can also make or break the story for me. No TSTL or wishy-washy heroines for me, pls. I see that enough in RL, thank you very much.

On that note, here's my Top 5 heroines in romance:

1.) CD Reiss' heroines
Monica Faulkner (Submission series)... Incidentally, Jonathan Drazen, her H, is also in my Top 5!
Theresa Drazen (Corruption series)
Laine Cartwright (Shuttergirl)
Vivian Foster (Hardball)
I realize this is kinda' cheating but in addition to her lyrical writing, engaging stories, smokin' hot H's, CD has also given me heroines worth their weight in salt.

2.) Jillian Knight aka Jessica Day (Jack and Jill series by Jewel E Ann)
Jillian aka Jessica is quite a unique h. She had tons of sh!t to deal with but I love how her feistiness shines through.

3.) Em Hayes (Devil's Game by Joanna Wylde)
Em surprised me in a way. She's the youngest in the bunch here. She's got so much spirit and fight in her, she's definitely wise beyond her years.

4.) Melody Giovanni (Ruthless People series by JJ Mcavoy)
Melody's got balls, to say the least. The head of a mafia family, she has to, doesn't she!

5.) Tyra Masters (Motorycyle Man by Kristen Ashley)
Tack, her H, is one of my Top 5 BBF, and Tack obviously needs someone equally deserving. She is strong in her own rights, with the right amount of quirkiness. Gah!

This list can also have extended editions, but interestingly enough, doubt that it would be as long as my H list. I don't think that's strange at all. We're talking romance here after all...

... is it just me? What makes a worthy h for you?

REVIEW: Walk Through Fire (Chaos, Book 4) by Kristen Ashley

RATING:

Blurb
Millie Cross knows what it's like to burn for someone. She was young and wild and he was fierce and even wilder-a Chaos biker who made her heart pound. They fell in love at first sight and life was good, until she learned she couldn't be the woman he needed and made it so he had no choice but to walk away. Twenty years later, Millie's chance run-in with her old flame sparks a desire she just can't ignore. And this time, she won't let him ride off . . .

Bad boy Logan "High" Judd has seen his share of troubles with the law. Yet it was a beautiful woman who broke him. After ending a loveless marriage, High is shocked when his true love walks back into his life. Millie is still gorgeous, but she's just a ghost of her former self. High's intrigued at the change, but her betrayal cut him deep-and he doesn't want to get burned again. As High sinks into meting out vengeance for Millie's betrayal, he'll break all over again when he realizes just how Millie walked through fire for her man . . .

Review

Oh Logan, seriously, you had me at "Hey!"...

More and more, I’m thinking the Chaos men are becoming top fave KA H’s, next to the Unfinished Heroes ones. Well, it does start with the granddaddy of em all, Tack, so how can that not be a good start to this series, no?

Maybe it’s just me, but this has a slightly different feel than the other Chaos books. There feels like more angst, less crazy shenanigans, and less OTT alpha gathering (ie outside of the Chaos men). No? Just me?

Logan/High and Millie has quite the history. Honestly, the beginning of their story just felt too good to be true, and at such a young age at that, you just know something is gonna create a (huge) ripple in that serene waters of young true love. Then came their second chance, and boy, was that ever the one of the sweetest second-chance story I’ve read.

There were things that made me ask what would’ve happened if certain things happened or didn’t. Thing that normally I couldn’t overlook or would not make sense in my head; like the extended length of time it took for them to reconnect after what felt like a very random occurrence or like the lack of communication that triggered it all. But in the end, I’m all ok with it. It felt like it was necessary. Things had to occur. Some learning curve needed to happen to take them to a better place. As far as I’m concerned, KA made it so that it makes sense to me. My heart broke for those 2, felt the pain that Millie went thru and the anguish that Logan went thru. Every now and then, that 1 pivotal scene runs through my head, and I feel all kinds of emotion wash through me.

While it might be hard to agree with Millie’s decisions, especially the one that caused it all, like Logan, I understood. For the price that she paid because of it, she deserved every bit of happy that she got. Oddly enough, High didn’t quite stand out for me in the previous Chaos books which was why I was a little surprised that his story came first before Rush. But I am glad nevertheless that his story came. Logan/High, I thought, was another pure KA alpha, swoon!!!! I cannot be more in love with this dude, honestly. Even when he was hurting, I couldn't not like him. After he learned the truth, he understood. He did his best to be a good dad. He loved, he lost, he took care of things, he took charge... sigh...

I  appreciate the fact the H&h are older than usual in this genre. And in true KA form, outside of the H&h’s story, there was the friendship, there was the humor, there were children (not as adorbs as the others but realistic nonetheless) and there was the hotness factor. What more can I ask for, right?

REVIEW: Ride Steady (Chaos, Book 3) by Kristen Ashley

RATING:

The ride of her life . . .
Once upon a time, Carissa Teodoro believed in happy endings. Money, marriage, motherhood: everything came easy---until she woke up to the ugly truth about her Prince Charming. Now a struggling, single mom and stranded by a flat tire, Carissa's pondering her mistakes when a vaguely familiar knight rides to her rescue on a ton of horsepower.
Climb on and hold tight . . .
In high school, Carson Steele was a bad boy loner who put Carissa on a pedestal where she stayed far beyond his reach. Today, he's the hard-bodied biker known only as Joker, and from the way Carissa's acting, it's clear she's falling fast. While catching her is irresistible, knowing what to do with her is a different story. A good girl like Carissa is the least likely fit with the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Too bad holding back is so damned hard. Now, as Joker's secrets are revealed and an outside threat endangers the club, Joker must decide whether to ride steady with Carissa---or ride away forever . . .

Review

*ARC received from publisher via Netgalley*

While I still have plenty of KA reads to go thru, Joker, without a doubt, will place top 5 in my KA H’s regardless. Like Tack, from the Dream Man series, the big daddy of Chaos, Joker has won me over from the get-go.

Other than Motorcycle Man that spawned the Chaos series, I haven’t gotten to Shy/Tabby’s or Hop/Laine’s stories yet in this particular series, but it’s all good. In time I know I will, but in the meantime, here we’re talking Joker and Carissa’ story, and what a sweet tender smokin’ story it is!

It’s not quite about 2nd- chance, and at the same time it is. It’s about the good people getting a break, good people meeting other good people, good people finding his/her place in the world and the right person standing next to him/her.

Joker had me at the prologue, simple as that. And I’m glad KA gave us another quirky feisty strong h in Carissa, who’s worthy of Joker. She made me laugh and she made me root for her from beginning to end. Joker, I can swoon over him from here to the moon and back, which I know doesn’t say much, so I will just say that if you’re a KA fan and familiar at all with her H’s, then he fits the mold like a glove… sigh…

And with it being typical KA at her finest, you get to see the characters that you love in her previous books, you get the crazy h shenanigans, you get the badass-est meeting of the H’s, you get the most adorable kid, or baby in this case, and you get some of the finest swoonalicious heartmelting lines you’ll read in a romance read.

Oh Joker, Joker… definitely one up there in the top list…sigh…

The Evolution of My Kristen Ashley Fangirling

Hi, Leftie here! (who else will it be, right?)

I thought I'd do a post focused on one of my new fave authors, Kristen Ashley, or KA as some of us fans refer her as, just because even I find it interesting that I didn't start out to be a fan when I first started reading her books, but here I am now, a huge fan to boot ...

Once upon a time, when I first started on Goodreads, one author kept popping up on my Goodreads recommendation. The next thing I knew, I also started seeing it on the pages of a handful of people on my Goodreads friends list. So I started paying attention and I noticed all these high ratings and raving reviews. And before I knew it, I picked up Mystery Man, the first one in her Dream Man series.

Well, let me tell you, I wasn't impressed with it, if I want to be completely frank. The first thing that that stood out for me was the writing. I wouldn't post my review, but all I want to say is that I recall repeating a paragraph to my sister on the phone and asking her if it made sense to her because it sure as heck did not make sense to me. And I also recall telling her that all the conjunctions are missing. What was up with that! I'm not even touching the run-on sentences... I got really confused. I started wondering where all those high ratings are coming from...

BUT, there was something in that story that, whether I admit it or not, made me want to finish the rest of the series. And in time, true enough, I did.

Mystery Man Wild Man Law Man Motorcycle Man
1. Mystery Man (2 napkins)
2. Wild Man (3 napkins)
3. Law Man (4 napkins)
4. Motorcycle Man (5 napkins, HUGE fave!)

Motorcycle Man, the last one in the series, is what sealed the deal for me. I finally got her style. I finally got why I kept reading, despite the "rocky start". As I said in one of my reviews, as I read more KA books, every new KA read shows me why I didn't give up on her stories. First I thought it was just her alpha men who just says and does the right things by their women in the most swoonalicious way. Then there're her heroines as well who she manages to give a quirkiness unique to each woman and a latent strong personality under all that quirkiness. Although I must add, maybe it's just me, but I don't always get how her heroines sometimes manage to have 2 or 3 other alpha men vying for her attention. Anyhoot...

Now, I want to say that there is definitely a certain charm to KA's writing, despite the run-on sentences, repetitive words and overly detailed descriptions. Because in addition to her awesome main characters (MC), I slowly started to appreciate the other stuff. One being the supporting characters like the MC's friends, to a point that I now enjoy what I call the Justice of League-style gathering, esp of the alpha men, in times of crisis, whether OTT ala Dream Man series style, or in the case of her other books, regular family drama. Then a couple of other things as well, like the family dynamics she weaves into the story and some of the most adorable children characters I've ever read.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

I've since read the Unfinished Hero series,
Knight Creed Raid Deacon
1. Knight (4 napkins)
2. Creed (5 napkins)
3. Raid (4 napkins)
4. Deacon (5 napkins, fave!)

3 of the The Burg series,
For You At Peace Golden Trail Games of the Heart The Promise
1. For You (5 napkins)
2. At Peace (5 napkins, fave!)
3. Golden Trail
4. Games of the Heart
4. The Promise (4 napkins)

and the first book in the Magdalene series,
The Will
The Will (5 napkins)

Luckily for me, there are still so many of her series that I haven't gotten to yet, so as far as my KA fix, I guess I'll be good for a while. Whew!
