I just frigging loved this!!!

I'll tell you why:

1) Sean!!!
2) Sean + Max = HOT, emotional, touching, sweet, funny, and HOT!!!
3) Scott and Max' friendship
4) More Scott
5) More Tad!!!
6) Which meant more Tad & Scott together!!!
7) More Tad & friends
8) Jonah
9) Additional glimpse into Kai and Breck
10) Sean!!!!

That seems a lot going on, but oh I loved it alright!

This picks up right where Unearthed ended. This is really about Sean forging ahead with his convictions about him and Max. This is really about Max grappling with his emotions and being able to understand and accept what's happening with him and Sean.

If it's still not clear, while Max is no chopped liver, Sean totally sealed the deal for me. I loved everything about him. I loved his confidence, his doubts, his perseverance, his humor, his everything! GAH! Sean's da man!!!

Max' actions and thoughts challenged me but he also stole my heart and by his flawed actions and thoughts, he also made Sean shine. Not that he's not worthy of Sean because he totally is. For all his challenges, Max is a man who loves and cares deeply, even when he wasn't ready to acknowledge it. That in itself made him endearing, albeit in a frustrating manner.

Nevertheless, I don't think I could've asked for anything more with this emotional conclusion to their story. All the characters I've come to enjoy and love made their appearance. Kora didn't shy away from contentious situations. She handled it deftly without weighing the story down. The story tugged the heartstrings. Their union sizzled! 

Kora, thank you for giving me another couple to love. That's it, it's decided, you write it, I'll read it!

With Revived, the 2nd book in the Unearthed Duology, the continuation of Max and Sean's story, coming out soon, it occurred to me that I didn't post my GR reviews of the Upending Tad series in here, the series that spawned the Unearthed one. So just rectifying that...

Volume 1: Loser Takes All

Not really an m/m romance gal but I gave this a try because when a Goodreads friend says it’s good, it’s gotta be good:D This is only the 2nd m/m story I’ve read. The 1st one was more of a novelty for me, just so I can say I’ve read one O.o But I think that was also meant for non m/m readers like me, ie, meant to break one in gently into the m/m rom world. Now this, when I say it pushed my limits, it quite pushed my limits. Hello, BDSM too! But I also have to say that this is all kinds of holy hotness, ooof!

Now is there is a story? I didn’t think there is one per se but I guess there will be if one continues with the series. Yes, yes, it all started with the bet, and of course, not a word wasted in getting into the smexy times immediately, all in a span of hours at that. Then it just kinda’ stops. There is the inner struggle that Tad, in particular, was going thru as the event unfolds, and to me, it felt real. And a little uncomfortable, if that makes sense. Now, Scott, I’m curious to find out where he’s coming from…

Volume 2: Test of Endurance

Like that song said, "It's getting hot in here..." LOL

Seriously, if all m/m romance are like this one, then heck, I'll take em all! Ok, maybe not. While I'm still not fully into this genre, let's just say if it's Kora Knight, then I'll take em all! There! *grins*

Tad and Scott's story continues, or should I say more like the study of Tad's character continues. It's all about Tad not understanding what's happened in Loser Takes All yet not being able to help himself to see that something else is happening. It's endearing and I did feel empathy for him as he tries to make sense of things. Poor Tad, such confusing times! I can't even get annoyed at his conflicting thoughts as I can feel it's a huge deal for him. Notwithstanding the smexy time, if I may so myself...*g*

I've started the 3rd book, Sideline Submission, as I'm writing this because how can I not, with a non-ending ending like that (and that's a beef I had, if any, Kora, sorry), just like how the first one ended (or non-ended) too. And Scott, I still wish to get to know him more. I'm getting him, but not getting him fully at the same time. But hey, this is Tad's "story" after all...

Volume 3: Sideline Submission

HOLY H-E-double-hockey-sticks!!

And I mean that in the hottest way! And umm, in a confused way too...

It was definitely nice to see Tad starting to at least acknowledge this thing that's happening between him and Scott beyond the bedroom... well, so to speak, seeing that they actually haven't done it in an actual bed, let alone a bedroom. Hah!

I thought it was nice to see them interacting without all the awkwardness from Tad, feeling their connection outside the "act" itself. But then it veered into BDSM land courtesy of Scott's roommate, and we're not talking vanilla-ized BDSM. I admit it was a tad uncomfortable and definitely pushed my limits (even past how this genre is pushing it). Having said that, I thought it was interesting to see how that was used as a vehicle to move their relationship (half?) a step forward.

I keep searching for a deeper layer to Scott but I'm seeing only what Tad sees, and I realize that's ok. It did feel like I saw more of him here, for sure. And Tad, in similar fashion as in the previous books, drives away again at the non-end. Only this time, it feels hopeful and not as confused...

Now I just have to wait for the next book...

RATING:

As a fan of the Upending Tad series, you bet your patutie I was excited when Kora first announced that Max and Sean will get their story. (Reminds me that I haven't actually posted my review of that series here on the blog, so I should correct that soon). From that series, getting a glimpse of these 2, you can't help but wonder what's going on behind the dynamics that you're seeing between them.

So as a fan of that series, while this can complete stand alone, my review of this book will be tinged with my feelings about these 2 from that series. For me there's just no way around it.

This is the beginning of Max and Sean's story. You get Max' history and it shows what happened to make Max the person he is, the person I got a glimpse of in the other series. To see this 180 transformation for Max was quite emotional and sad in a way, but as you get to the present, kinda delish at the same time. By the time he meets Sean, he's fully transformed to the Dom he is.

Now Sean, I didn't to expect to fall in love with him as much as I thought I would. Of course I only saw only a small fraction of Sean's personality in the other series. Here, I got to see the witty, funny and flirty side of Sean. I saw the brat that's the right match for Max. But more than that, I saw the maturity, in a sense, arising from a messed up childhood. Seeing him reconcile some of his thoughts and feelings with Max' non-judgmental help, it showed a lot of depth.

Seeing this is only the first book, we're really not quite at the romance part. It's about getting to know Max and Sean individually and how the attraction is developing between them all within the context of the BDSM scene; some parts, I would admit, did push my limits. If you're like me and it's not a theme you tend to read, consider yourself educated more, hehe... And with Kora highly skilled with edging in her writing, prepare for one intense hot read.Hot dang! The droll exchange between these 2 (ok, of Max and Scott as well.. well, I cannot not mention Scott, hello! Oh, of Sean and his friend, Jonah, too!) coupled with the simmering heat between them... ooomph... talk about lethal combo!

Seriously can't wait for bk 2! At this point, I'm prepared to make a space for Max and Sean, next to Tad and Scott, in my fave couples category. Ready!!!
