RELEASE DAY BLITZ: Softer Than Steel by Jessica Topper

Softer Than Steel Release Day Banner

  SofterThanSteel_re

From the author of Deeper than Dreams and the Much "I Do" About Nothing novels, a story that proves that you have to find yourself before you can find love... Under the liberating guise of his alter ego ‘Riff Rotten’, Rick Rottenberg has circled the globe playing sold-out shows and sampling the universal delights that fame and fortune allow a rock star of his caliber. But he can no longer ignore the panic attacks plaguing him with increasing regularity. Not knowing where else to turn, Rick finds himself turning a doorknob – entering not only into the spiritual world of yoga, but into a retro world of rock music he had long abandoned as well. Revolve Records reminds him of why he picked up a guitar in the first place, and he hopes that Evolve Yoga – and its sexy owner - will help him forget everything else. Swearing off musicians has been Sidra Sullivan’s mantra ever since a charismatic singer with a bad case of LSD (Lead Singer Disease) blocked her chakras and closed off her heart. The last thing she wants is another huge ego in tight pants hanging around, consuming her time and attention. But when Rick makes an offer to save her family’s historic Lower East Side building in exchange for her help, she begrudgingly makes an exception. As she works him up to more challenging poses, he begins to wear down her walls of protection, challenging her to see him in a different light. She, in turn, teaches the steeled, seasoned rock warrior to soften his stance and find strength from within. But when a rock and roll power play threatens to disrupt the delicate balance that has grown between them, Sidra must decide whether to follow her head and fight, or to open her heart and fly. INCLUDES A PREVIEW OF THE FIRST LOVE & STEEL NOVEL: LOUDER THAN LOVE Praise for the Love & Steel novels "Pitch perfect escapism!"--Barbara Claypole White, author of The Perfect Son "I was absolutely blown away."--The Book Pushers "A beautiful and engaging story that will melt your heart."--Open Book Society "Cozy, witty, modern and yet poetic...Breathtaking in its imagery."--Maryse's Book Blog

  Excerpt
“Making music has got to be like . . . like childbirth, bringing something totally new into the world like that. Isn’t that scary?”
Rick contemplated her comparison and she waited, watching him with those incredible eyes, both dark and bright. “Yes, in a way it’s bloody terrifying,” he admitted. The creating and the coaxing, making sure what you envisioned in your head translated into reality and not just a shadow of itself. “But the excitement and exhilaration trumps the fear.” He popped a pair of headphones on her ears and backed out of the room with a grin.
Behind the console, he flicked switches, adjusted levels, and pressed the talkback button. “Pay no attention to the man behind the glass,” he whispered, but Sidra’s broad smile told him the console mic had sent his fluid murmur to her ears crystal clear.
She tentatively tapped the double-mesh screen of the microphone in front of her. “But don’t you worry, once it’s out in the world . . . what everyone thinks of it? Of you?”
“I used to get caught up in it. But you’ve just got to trust and make peace with the fact that you put in—and put out—your very best effort.”
The track he chose for her flowed not only through her headphones, but the speakers of the console in front of him as well, its beat and melody causing the indicator lights to jump and fall in time. Sidra’s eyes closed and her frame rocked slightly. To me, Rick thought.
That’s my music, moving her.

As he gulped down the water, I watched his Adam’s apple moving up and down. I used the opportunity to glance over his sweaty body up close. The top of his underwear was sticking out of his jeans. The smell of him was intoxicating, a mix of cut wood, sweat and cologne. I thought about our talk the other night, how he’d confessed his sexual history. As much as it disturbed me, knowing he’d used that body to give a woman pleasure made me weak with desire. I could only imagine what that would feel like with him.
Elle would find out.
I was still looking down at his abs when he said, “Thank you.” My eyes immediately shot up to meet his incendiary stare.
He’d caught me checking him out.
“You’re welcome.”
His mouth curved into a smile as he handed me back the glass. “How have you been? I haven’t seen you much this week.”
“Yeah. I’ve been busy.”
“I have something for you,” he blurted out in a way that indicated he was anxiously waiting to say it.
“For me?”
“Yeah. Wait here, okay?”
Sevin ran over to where his truck was parked and grabbed something out of the open window.
He returned to where I was standing and handed me a CD.
“What is it?”
“If you like the Smiths, you’ll like some of the songs on here. I included a few Smiths songs—the ones from your favorite album, but there’s also The Lemonheads, The Pixies…and Pulp.”
“You made this?”
“Yeah. I made it for myself and burned you a copy.”
“Thanks.”
He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “Number ten is my favorite.” Then, he walked away.
I immediately took it back to my room and dusted off my old portable CD player.
Lying down on my bed with the sun streaming in, I drowned out the world and listened to every song. When it got to number ten, I paid special attention, knowing he’d specifically called that one out.
The name of the song was Like a Friend. I later found out it was by Pulp. With each lyric, my eyes became heavier until they welled up in tears. The words described to a tee exactly how I’d been feeling about him. The singer was shouting out all his feelings about his friend, that she was everything he shouldn’t want, everything that was bad for him, but yet he couldn’t stop wanting her. He’d take what he could get even if that just meant being friends. Every single line spoke to me. It was the first time I realized that maybe I wasn’t alone in my torment. This situation—whatever was happening between us—was taking a toll on him, too.
I must have listened to the song five times before I went over to the window and looked down at him. At one point, he finally looked up and noticed me. He squinted his eyes to see me through the glare of the sun. I still had my headphones on. He knew I had heard number ten. The look on his face when our eyes locked only confirmed that number ten wasn’t just a song. It was his way of speaking to me.

What happens when the one you want is the only one you can't have?

My name is Sevin.

Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.

Elle was the girl who'd been carefully chosen for me.

After a long-distance courtship, I'd be moving into her family's guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.

Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.

I'd accepted those rules and my fate.

Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.

That was when restraint became a problem...especially since THE ONE wasn't Elle.

It was her sister, Evangeline.

You know what they say about best laid plans.

My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel. Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. Only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Just as I was considering making my excuses and driving back to the hotel in Arcata, a man’s laugh rang out, a sound of deep joy echoing through the twilight. I looked across and saw him: his head thrown back, his eyes sparkling, his hands on his hips. He was still smiling when his gaze met mine. I saw his eyes darken with a predatory expression that made me feel as if his gaze alone could strip the clothes from my body.
  Tucker McCoy.
I straightened up fractionally when he started to approach me, his walk loose-limbed and confident.
“Hey there,” he said, giving me a sexy half-smile as he casually propped a shoulder against the coffeeberry tree where I was slumped in a deckchair. “Tell me why a beautiful woman is sitting all by her lonesome.”
His accent was warm with a touch of Southern that melted like honey on his tongue.
I raised an eyebrow and gave him one of my father’s patented campaign stares, the one he used with reporters who asked dumb questions.
“I’ll take the compliment of being called beautiful,” I said, “but really, is that the best line you have?”
The light of challenge sparked in his eyes and his grin grew wider.
“Not even close to my best,” he said with a cocky edge to his voice. “I thought I’d start off easy.”
“Oh, but I’m not easy,” I replied. “I’m complicated and difficult and it takes a lot of work to impress me.”
I was lying. His long, lean build, deep-set eyes and model-pretty face were impressing the hell out of me. His hair was curling to his chin, the ends bleached to a dirty blond by the sun. And what color were those amazing eyes? Gray? Green? Almost a light olive color—I’d never seen anything like them before.
Close up, the air seemed to spark and crackle around him. There was an intensity hidden in his lazy gaze and laidback smile that made me uncomfortable. I didn’t want to feel the heat in his eyes, and I definitely didn’t want to feel the attraction pulling at me.
Feeling twitchy and wanting to squirm under his penetrating gaze, I did the opposite: I leaned back, crossing one leg over the other, smiling to myself as his eyes followed the movement.
He glanced up and grinned again.
“I’ve never been afraid of hard work,” he murmured, hooking a thumb through one of his belt loops.
“Good to know that you like a challenge—that makes it easy for me.”
“How d’you figure that?” he asked, his lips curving upwards.
“I just keep saying no to keep you interested.”
“So you want to keep me interested?”
“I like a challenge,” I threw back at him.
He leaned a little closer and it felt like a bolt of static electricity zipped between us. I glanced out toward the ocean, wondering if a storm was brewing, but the waves were silky ripples under a purple sky.
“I’ll work for my supper,” he said, his tongue flicking out to wet his lips as he spoke, looking at me as if I was on the menu.
It sounded so dirty, the way he said it, the way his gaze roved over my chest. But I wasn’t going to let him know that.
“Now you want me to cook for you, too? Wow, you’re sure of yourself.”
He gave a husky laugh. “Is it bad that I’m sure of myself? It’s you I’m not sure about.”
“What makes you so sure of yourself?” I asked, looking him in the eye.
“What you see is what you get.”
“Hmm, so no hidden depths. That’s disappointing.”
He grinned at me, his eyes crinkling with pleasure.
“Nope, absolutely no hidden depths. As shallow as the day is long. But that means no surprises, right? Just lil ole me—everything that you’ve been checking out for the last two minutes.”
My cheeks flushed as I met his eyes.
“Not that I mind,” he went on. “I like the way you look at me … pretty much like the way I’m looking at you.”
“Slightly annoyed?” I suggested, pretending to be bored.
He grinned and shook his head.
“Uh-uh, pretty lady. The look you’ve been giving me says that you’re interested.” He leaned closer. “I’ll be hitting the road tomorrow, but we could make sweet music tonight. It’ll be worth your while—I’m a guy who knows how to use his … hands.”
“I’m more concerned with your mouth … more specifically your tongue … especially if you keep mixing your metaphors.”
  He gave a startled laugh.
“I think you’re teasing me, beautiful, or maybe that’s a challenge?”
“Not at all,” I said, being serious for a moment. “I know you’re good with your hands. I was told you did most of the repairs on Kes and Aimee’s cabin. Did you work in construction before you joined the carnival?”
Tucker looked taken aback. “Who told you that?”
  “Aimee mentioned a few things.”
Tucker lifted a shoulder and leaned back against the tree, his face hidden in the shadows.
“Just some stuff I picked up,” he said, sounding wary now.
“More than a few things from what I heard.”
He shrugged again, noncommittal, then his eyes made a slow appraisal of my body. I should have been insulted by the way he let his hot gaze roam every inch of me, but I was enjoying returning the favor.
His jeans hung loosely from his hips, the rips in one knee caused by hard usage not designer tears. He wore an Eagles t-shirt that had been washed so many times it was impossible to read the words that ghosted over his firm chest. His biceps bunched as he propped himself against the tree, and his tanned skin was turning from gold to light brown in the first months of spring, but he was no gym rat. Everything he had was from hard, physical labor. I’d been brought up with men who pushed papers for a living—this man was not from their world. And that excited me.
“Why’s a class act like you hanging with a bunch of carnies?” he asked.
His voice had turned edgy and his question felt like a test.
  “What do you mean?”
His tone was still lazy, but there was a tightness that hadn’t been apparent before.
“Sweet cheeks, you’re wearing a designer skirt that must have cost two hundred dollars and there’s nothing cheap about your perfume.”
Determined not to show my chagrin that he’d read me so easily, my reply was calm and level.
“Three-hundred dollars. And I’m visiting friends.”
“Guy friends?”
“Jealous?” I asked with a light laugh.
  He grinned.
“Maybe I just don’t feel like kicking anyone’s ass tonight.”
“Maybe you’d be the one getting your ass kicked.”
He leaned closer, and I caught the scent of soap and clean sweat.
“If you’re the one doing the kicking, it would be worth it.”
He whispered the last words, making me lean towards him, but when we were close enough to touch, he pulled away at the last second and winked at me.
Annoyed, I sank back into my chair.
“I think I’d like to kick your ass.”
“I think I’d like to let you.”
I couldn’t help laughing. “Very smooth, Mr. McCoy.”
  His expression showed surprise.
“Well now, that just doesn’t seem polite that you know my name but I don’t know yours. You gonna tell me your name, sweet cheeks?”
I stood up and smiled at him.
“Well now, it isn’t ‘sweet cheeks’.”
I lifted my beer in a salute and walked away, hearing his laughter follow me.
I knew myself well enough to know that I was minutes from falling for his obvious charms. I needed to get away before… The hell I did!
I almost stumbled as my steps faltered. What on earth was I doing? Why was I running away from a man that I was deeply attracted to, whose eyes promised as much sin as I could take in a single night?

♥♥♥ Oh Tucker, you sugar, you!!! ♥♥♥

When I found out that Tucker was getting his story as part of this series, I just knew I had to continue with the series.

The first 2 books (The Traveling Man and The Traveling Woman) introduced us not only to Kes & Aimee but also to the interesting and thrilling world that is the carnival. Here, we continue to see the inner workings of the carnie world, but the focus is now on Tucker and Tera, obviously.

Tera, Kes’ half-sister, was introduced in the 2nd book. Tucker, is one of the stuntmen who make up Kes’ team. Their story brings a whole different dimension, clearly, because of their back story. Whereas Kes was born into the carnie world, Tucker stumbled upon it and entered that world out of necessity. As much as an outsider Aimee was, she brings in a lot of history with Kes from childhood. Tera, on the other hand, has none of that history.

They start noticing each other. Tera was just ready to live a little and what better way than to act on her pull towards Tucker. Tucker initially didn’t want to acknowledge her out of respect for Kes primarily and thinking that Tera was just out of his league. But I gotta hand it to Tera. She put herself out there and just pursued him in her own quiet way.

Tucker and Tera couldn’t have come from any more opposite upbringing and lifestyle. Tucker’s past was one full of desperation and sadness. Tera’s was full of privilege and indulgences. Tucker due to his past and work had his manwhore ways. Tera had her sheltered life, under the shadow of his politician father. Tucker was all about not being tied down. Tera was all about being settled. And yet…

Tera had me worried a little in the beginning thinking her naiveté will get the better of her, having this almost unrealistic view of the world just because of how wrapped in cotton wool she was. Also, as she admitted herself, for all the independence she claimed to want to have, she tugged daddy’s purse string enough. But despite all that, I actually did like her a lot in the end. Her actions showed growth, it showed oomph, and she truly saw the kind of man Tucker had hidden underneath and realized what a treasure he is.

Tucker was undoubtedly a diamond in the rough. I’ve seen already how he cared for his carnie family even in the previous books. For all the manwhore ways that he projected, whether he acknowledged it or not, he’s a true gentleman and a real family man, and he takes his responsibilities seriously. He’s lackadaisical yet he knows how to man up. He’s funny, got no guile about him, a natural people-person, very charming, and oh so sweet… and oh, hot! *wink-wink*

I loved how they tackled the challenge(s) that their relationship presented; realistically, maturely, and accommodatingly. It showed how much they truly care for each other. *sigh*

If I had any qualms about this book, it’s only because the pace of some of the scenes felt a tad off for me, and one scene near the end almost felt like overkill. I thought to myself, what else does this couple need to go thru?

Ultimately though, Jane has captured my heart once again with another beautiful touching story that’s full of earnest honest feelings.

The Traveling Man (Traveling Series, #1)

traveling man

I was ordinary. Nice. He was extraordinary. And he wasn’t always nice.
Moody and difficult, brilliant and beautiful, Kes scared me and he protected me. He could be incredibly hurtful and incredibly thoughtful. He wasn’t perfect, but he was perfect for me. He challenged me, he took me out of my safe little box and showed me the world could be magnificent. He was everything I wasn’t. Aimee Anderson is ten when the traveling carnival first comes to her nice little town. She doesn’t expect her world to change so completely. But meeting Kestrel Donohue puts her life on a different path. Even though she only sees him for the two weeks of the year when he passes through her home town, his friendship is the most important of her life. As a child’s friendship grows to adult love, the choices become harder, and both Kes and Aimee realize that two weeks a year will never be enough.

The Traveling Woman (Traveling Series, #2)

traveling woman

How many times do you gamble on love? When love has knocked you down, should you give it another chance? When does optimism become stupidity?
And what happens when the man you’re in love with is never still, always moving, always traveling? Do you say goodbye, or do you leave behind everything that you’ve worked for, everything that you’ve ever known? Can a traveling carnival be my home? Oh. You thought I had the answers. No, sorry. No answers, just a lot of questions—and a heart that wants to rule my head. Can one person be my home?

REVIEW: Ryker (Cold Fury Hockey, Book 4) by Sawyer Bennett

RATING:

Amazon || Kobo || B&N

BLURB

The rugged men of the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team are winning hearts once again in another scorching novel from New York Times bestselling author Sawyer Bennett.
The stakes have never been higher for Carolina Cold Fury goalie Ryker Evans. With his contract running out, he’s got a year left to prove he’s still at the top of his game. And since his wife left him, Ryker has been balancing life as a pro-hockey star and a single parent to two daughters. Management is waiting for him to screw up. The fans are ready to pounce. Everybody’s taking dirty shots—except for the fiery redhead whose faith in Ryker gives him a fresh start.
As the league’s only female general manager, Gray Brannon has learned not to mix business with pleasure. And yet even this tough, talented career woman can’t help breaking her own rules as she gives Ryker everything she’s got. She hopes their hot streak will last forever, but with Ryker’s conniving ex plotting to reclaim her man, the pressure’s on Gray to step up and save a tender new love before it’s too late.

REVIEW

I think this just might be my favorite in the series! While I’ve enjoyed the other Cold Fury hotties, Ryker, well, I thought he was quite swoonalicious, yes he was!.

This is Ryker and Gray’s story. He of the single dad scouted by Gray to be Cold Fury’s goalie; and she of the daughter of the CEO who was previously a scout but now the GM of the Cold Fury team. With them realizing their attraction for each other, it’s a tenuous situation at best. How can they move their relationship forward when so much is at stake as far as their careers are concerned? And then there was Ryker’s ex who wasn’t fully out of the picture…

I admit at times I had to convince myself harder to buy into some of the feelings; like the initial attraction between those 2 or how Gray felt near the end when having to deal with Ryker’s ex. Or should I say Ryker convinced me, perhaps? Hehe…

Gray had a decent upbringing and past, so not much emotional baggage other than her having to understand her feelings towards Ryker. She’s not overly girly but also knows that she didn’t need to sacrifice her femininity to be taken seriously by the boys. Ryker, what’s not to like??? He’s an awesome dad. He braids his daughter’s hair, for crying out loud, and when that thing happened to his daughter, I fell for it, hook, line and sinker. He’s a responsible dude, not overly serious and even self-deprecating at times, he knows how to think with his bigger brain, he understood Gray’s position, he’s progressive with his thoughts, AND he’s hot!!!*g*

I got hooked on Sawyer Bennett from the start of this series, so much that I keep an eye now on any new book on this series. Heck, any of her new book, period. And I’m hoping to get to her other previous books now too. I think this particular series just keeps getting better. If you’re looking for a hot sports romance read, I think it’s safe to say you need to make room for these Cold Fury men, especially Ryker:D

Lastly, did I say already how I loved the grand gesture at the end? No? Well, yes, I did!
