I sat on the cold cement floor of the bathroom, knees to my chest, arms tight around them as I waited for the door to open.
Booted steps strode through my adjoining bedroom toward me.
Closer. Louder.
Goose bumps scattered. My body trembled as raw fear gripped me. It was like I was hanging off the side of a cliff by my fingernails, knowing I’d eventually fall and the pain would come.
Unbearable pain.
He’d come. My husband or whoever he’d sent to get me.
There was no escape. No where to run.
The heavy thuds stopped outside the bathroom door, and I glimpsed the tall, dark shadow that filtered through the two-inch gape.
I put my chin on my knee and closed my eyes, afraid to look. If I didn’t look, then no one was here. My breath came in short, sharp, quiet gasps and I dug my fingers into the sides of my thighs so hard, blood trickled down my skin through my pants.
For almost a month, I’d expected this day to come, stomach churning every time I heard someone in the corridor outside my bedroom. Living in a black hole, I was desperate to get out, but knew the day I did, it was to face punishment for helping the Scars escape the compound.
The door pushed open with what sounded like a kick of a boot.
Tears pooled in my eyes and spilled down my cheeks. I squeezed my eyes shut harder as fear drilled into me like tiny darts piercing my skin.
Another step.
Then another.
Then nothing.
Please don’t let it be Ben. Anyone but Ben.
“F*ck, babe. What the hell?”
My breath hitched at the sound of the familiar, deep voice. A voice I’d never forget. A voice that gave me hope then snatched it away with his lies.
I raised my head and locked eyes on the Scar I’d helped escape.
Well, more like he used me in order to help him and his friend escape.
He was also the man who had haunted my dreams for weeks since then. And they were haunting because he was scary. Not ugly scary, far from it, but intense scary.
He had a chiseled jaw with a few days of scruff and defined cheekbones. His look was old-world, which made sense since the Scars were immortal, but he definitely wasn’t an old-world English gentleman. More like a Highland Scot.
A long, jagged scar dragged from his right brow to his ear and another across his neck, which attributed to the scary factor. But that wasn’t what did it—that gave him character, it gave him a story.
It was his eyes that really intimidated, black and cold without a hint of compassion. And after spending a night in an air duct with him, I knew, compassion was not part of his disposition.
Actually, he’d been an a$$hole and didn’t try to hide it.
“Get up.”
I didn’t move.
I didn’t know what to do. He’d used me before, so I guessed he was here to use me again, although the reason was unclear because my husband didn’t have any Scars in his compound for this guy to break out.
“Babe, don’t have time for this sh!t. Get the f*ck up.” He didn’t wait for me to get up, but bent, grabbed my forearm, and hauled me to my feet with a rough yank. I landed against him, my palms on his chest.
I quickly shoved back, but his hand remained locked on my forearm, and he didn’t allow me further than arm’s length. Staring, he performed a quick assessment, his dark eyes narrowing and trailing down the front of me.
“You look like sh!t. Worse, actually.” With the calloused pad of his thumb, he haphazardly wiped the tears from my cheeks.
I had no response. I was confused as to why he was here and how he managed to get into the basement and find me without the alarms blaring.
He cupped my chin. “You hurt?”
Not really, but I was an emotional wreck. Did that count?
“You need to answer me when I ask you a question.”
He was right, I did, and not because he told me to, but because there was a sliver of hope. I always had it. Most of the time, it was buried deep, but when my eyes hit the Scar… it surfaced whether I wanted it to or not.
So, that hope was him, and pissing him off was going to kill it.
“No,” I said. He frowned. “I’m not hurt.” Then I had a moment of bravery that came with the hope. “Ummm, why are you here?”
“Isn’t it obvious?”
Not really. But the answer wasn’t important, because he’d lied to me before, so no matter what he said, it was highly probable it was complete bullsh!t. And so was my hope.
His jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed; yet his hand on my chin was soft and gentle. “Do I need to f*ckin’ carry you?”
What was he talking about? “Carry me? Carry me where?”
His lips pursed together as he glared at me with black, unforgiving eyes. “Listen, babe, I don’t feel like becoming some guy’s lab rat, so I need you to pull your sh!t together, answer my questions, stop asking them, and maybe we’ll get out of here alive.”
Get out of here? The hope plowed back into me, but I was afraid to grab onto it because I didn’t dare believe the Scar had come back to get me out of here. Why would he?
But there was something different in him than three weeks ago. Maybe it was the way he gently wiped my tears away or how he held me right now, his fingers no longer bruising, but holding me steady as if he knew I needed the support.
He was tall, probably six foot two, and I’d noticed when I was against his chest that my head tucked under his chin. I also noticed, beneath his black T-shirt, he was rock-hard with ridges and valleys of muscles.
His hand moved to the back of my neck. It wasn’t exactly gentle, but more like he was attempting to get my attention. He already had it, but I was still confused.
“You want to get out of this pi$$hole? ‘Cause if you don’t, tell me now so I can leave you here and get the f*ck out.”
I tried to lower my head, but his grip on the back of my neck tightened and I was forced to meet his eyes. “I hate him.” Why did I say that? I mean, I did, but he didn’t ask me that.
His brows drew together and his grip on my neck tightened. “Yeah, I got that, babe.”
Logically, I should be terrified of him, yet I wasn’t. It was more nervousness than anything.
There was a hint of something I recognized in his eyes that was oddly comforting. And I recognized it because it was the same look I saw in myself; the haunting tornado of emotions trapped behind a wall.
Our walls were very different, though. His wall was a shield of anger. Mine was a shield of numbness.
He let me go, eyes scanning the bathroom before grabbing my sweatshirt hanging on a hook on the wall. “Arms up.” I did and he pulled it over my head. “It’s cold and you don’t have an ounce of fat on you,” he said while his gaze traveled the length of my body. “Jesus, you look like you’ll break in a gust of wind.” He swore beneath his breath and shook his head. “You good to run?”
My legs felt like uncooked spaghetti ready to crack in half at the slightest push and my heart beat erratically, having to work hard to keep my body functioning. I was falling apart, so probably the truth would be a hell no, but I nodded anyway.
He hesitated then nodded, as if satisfied that, regardless of my lie, he thought I’d be able to at least keep up.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me from the bathroom, through the bedroom, to the door.
He pulled a knife from a leather sheath at his hip and opened the door, peering out before looking back at me. “Keep close. Lag behind and I’m not coming back for you. Understand?”
I nodded.
I didn’t trust him, but I did know he would leave me because he’d done it before.
The fight inside me had died years ago, as had the ability to trust anyone. I had trusted. I had fought. Neither had done me any good. So now I trusted myself, and that meant killing parts of who I was.
It meant protecting me.
Burying me.
“Babe?”
I snapped my eyes to his. For a second, I thought his eyes softened, but it was more wishful thinking on my part. He was probably thinking he’d just made the stupidest mistake of his life by coming back here. Escaping my husband’s compound twice had a high probability of failure.
His fingers curled around my fragile hand, squeezed, then tugged me forward. “Let’s get the f*ck out of this sh!thole.”

REVIEW

RATING:

I was quite excited with this one seeing that this is Kilter's story with Rayne; Kilter, who has intrigued me right from the start since he was such an a$$, but there was something that ran deep there. Oh Kilter...

I've been a fan of this series right from the start, this paranormal world that Nashoda has built. These Scar men and women who have lived for centuries, have loved and lost, and experienced pain. In Stygian, the first book, Balen and Danni get their HEA, and here, it's Kilter and Rayne's turn.

Rayne has known nothing but pain and all kinds of bad things in the hands of her so-called husband in a place where only evil things happen. Kilter has been a lone rogue for the longest time due to his perception of a past event. When they met, they're both quite broken and very untrusting, yet somehow they trust each other and feel connected.

Rayne is suffering and it would take more than Kilter to heal her. With her healing, she's slowly learned to gain her strength and have faith in herself. Kilter was suffering just as much and certain truths brought on his healing, with the help of Rayne. They really were stronger together.

Just like in the first book, you get multiple POVs, not just of Kilter's and Rayne's. Rayne, especially, played a big part in the event that's unfolding, which meant Kilter had to be involved. But in addition to that, there were things happening to the other characters, particularly Waleron and Delara, and Damien and Abby. All culminating to one kicka$$ confrontation.

Damien and Abby earned my sympathy and I felt their heartache. Waleron and Delara, those 2 have so much history, so much heartache and passion between them, it leapt thru the pages.

Which brings me to my next point, that I wish Kilter and Rayne had more times together. Like I mentioned earlier, I was excited even before this to get to Kilter's story so that made me wish he had more pages. And consequently, I felt some events felt rushed where they're concerned.

Regardless, I am just completely in love with this series, especially these Scar men! They have so many layers to them, they just ooze passion, and boy, the way they love their women in that alpha sensitive way, sigh... (yes, that totally makes sense)... sigh...

Next up is Waleron and Delara's story, yes!!!!!!!!!!!

DANCE. Guns.

Music in my head, dance in my body, the rhythm of my heart.

How far can you fall in just one month? How quickly can the human spirit be broken? Where does evil hide in plain sight?

Ash wants to dance. Needs it. To leave behind a life of expectation and duty, to set his soul free.

But life is never that simple. Every step is a journey on a new road.

For every action, there is a reaction.

Every choice has a consequence.

And when you meet the wrong person, all bets are off.

Laney tolerates her limitations, pushing quietly at boundaries. But when Ash crashes into her world through rage and violence, it sets off a chain reaction that neither of them expected.

AP- Excerpt.jpg

Laney POV
His eyes glowed, passion firing through them. Then he lowered his head and kissed the back of my hand.
It was a sweet, old fashioned gesture, totally at odds with the lust I saw as he let his eyes stroll across my body, seemingly unable to choose between my breasts or my lips.
I helped make up his mind by folding my arms around him and tugging his head down so I could press my lips against his.
He opened his mouth, then proceeded to give me the hottest, slowest, most tantalizing kiss I’d ever had. He was telling me that he was in control and he’d kiss me the way he damn well wanted.
Playful Ash, serious Ash, flirty Ash—I couldn’t help thinking that sexy-as-sin Ash was proving to be my favorite.
His hips moved in a slow rhythm that may have been dancing or may have been back-to-basics grassroots grinding. I reached down for the heat between his legs, massaging the growing bulge at the front of his jeans.
A shudder ran through his body and he ground harder against my hand. I couldn’t wait to be skin to skin.
I unbuttoned his shirt clumsily, fingers deft as sausages as I tried to get at his bare skin. He laughed against my lips and lifted his arms so I could pull the cotton over his head.
Skin like warm silk, smooth and soft, covering hard muscle, my fingers dragged across the planes and ripples of his chest and stomach, then fluttered over the welts and scarred flesh of his back.
Ash kicked off his shoes, and rid himself of the rest of his clothes before prowling toward me. His eyes said, naked now! Mine replied, make me.
He swept me from my feet so swiftly, my stomach swooped, and he carried me to the bed, our bed, working my clothes from my body between slow, hot kisses.
I closed my eyes, needing some defense against his beautiful face and the sensations that threatened to overwhelm me. He was an ocean wave, the high tide, and I was drowning in happiness and physical pleasure.

REVIEW

RATING:

Seeing this is Jane's work, I know I shouldn't have been surprised by this at all, but in all honesty, it did, in ways that I didn't expect.

Aside from the fact that this is Jane's work, which generally almost always makes me pick it up sight unseen, so to speak, the cover (gorgeous!) just lured me in further, then the blurb (as if I needed to read it!) just intrigued me. But beyond that, the blurb really gives you just enough without giving anything away.

It ended up being more emotional than I anticipated and I totally appreciated it. It touched on subject that not a lot of people are familiar with yet very prevalent more than one thinks. It touched on the aftermath of horrific events. It touched on what it feels like to live a life that not a lot of people understand or unsure how to react towards, be that coming from lack of knowledge or just plain insensitivity. It touched on finding love despite it all. It touched on acceptance and moving forward.

Laney and Ash met at the most unpleasant time for Ash. Laney became Ash's salvation but in more ways than one, Ash has become the same for Laney. Ash has a noble spirit whether he acknowledged it or not. His passion oozes thru his craft and bleeds everywhere else. There is such vulnerability there that Laney totally got. You can understand his emotional instability brought on by his experience. I understand why Laney felt the way she felt. Laney has a latent strength that not a lot of people acknowledge. Her high spirits are commendable given the hand she's dealt with. She's caring, generous, and beautiful inside and out.

Within the short amount of time that Lane and Ash got to know each other, I believed the emotions that developed. There were horrific events that completely blindsided me, turns of events that was almost expected but still caught me off guard, emotional outbursts out of nowhere that caught me off balance but totally understood, and unexpected moments of levity that gave me smiles... sigh...

Thank you, Jane, for another emotional ride! Looking forward to Luka's story:)

AP - about the author.jpg

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to write. Perhaps it was growing up in a village well known for its mystery and folklore, which sparked my imagination as a child.
I enjoy writing in several different genres, and I've just published my first romcom, 'Dazzled'.
All my books have a little me in them, and I'm inspired by the personal stories of those around me. It's often from a simple discussion overheard in the train ('Exposure'), in a café, or in the street, where ideas for characters or scenes come to me.
I fell in love with both Sam ('The New Samurai') and the eponymous Sebastian in 'The Education of Sebastian' and the sequel 'The Education of Caroline', and missed them desperately once I'd finished their stories. I love writing dialogue and always try to include touches of humour in the most poignant stories.
Whether you like adult romance novels, new or young adult writing, thrillers, or fantasy, I hope you'll enjoy the journey through my stories.

REVIEW: The Bellator Saga: The First Trilogy by Cecilia London

Two souls intertwined. One epic love story.

Get swept away in the passionate romance between political opposites Caroline Gerard and Jack McIntyre in the first half of The Bellator Saga.

This set contains the first three books in the series, Dissident, Conscience, and Sojourn.

Dissident:

Rising Democratic star Caroline Gerard is reluctant to fall in love again after losing her husband. Can Republican playboy Jack McIntyre break through her grief and capture her heart? Told mostly in flashback and set against a chilling fascist backdrop, Dissident is a rollercoaster ride of political intrigue, passionate romance, and undying love.

Conscience:

Sojourn:

Reeling from her experiences at The Fed, Caroline tries to forge ahead and create a new identity. But that’s hard to do with the ghosts of the past constantly whispering in her ear. She is determined to find the rebellion and move on with her life, but what will she find when she arrives there?

REVIEW

RATING:

Hmmm…

This is gonna be one interesting review, I think, and a loooong one at that (I won’t even go into how long it took me to write this one)… There’s so much to say and so many emotions to convey… Should I do this in chunks? Do I do it as a whole? Where do I even start?

This came highly recommended by a friend on Goodreads, and now I know why. If I can give this book more than 5 stars, there is no doubt that I would! I haven’t felt like this about a book in a while, honestly… And considering the amount of books I read, I sometimes feel certain stories are a dime a dozen, so for this book to leave me gobsmacked at the end is quite a feat. And to think this is just the first 3 trilogy!!

Let’s start with the series title, “The Bellator Saga”. Bellator means “warrior”, in Latin. In and of itself, it’s got oomph, don’t ya think? And within this trilogy are the books Dissident, Conscience, and Sojourn. These titles alone definitely give you an idea of what you will be in for. Very clever!

This is the story of Caroline and Jack (Btw, very Kennedy-esque, eh? No? Just me?) This is their journey told in third-person and from Caroline’s perspective. It moved between flashbacks and the present alternately. So while I feared for the things happening currently and my anxiety level remains high, Caroline and Jack’s love story was unfolding thru the flashback and I was falling in love with them and couldn’t help but get all hot and bothered along the way.

They’re both politicians on the rise. Their first encounter was far from congenial but from that first encounter grew a friendship which blossomed into more. And in a way, you can say they live happily ever after. But as their relationship solidifies, there are things happening in the country, things that both Caroline and Jack can’t ignore and because of that, sacrifices have to be made, actions had to be taken.

If I can quickly sum up my take of each book, this is how it would look:

Dissident: lays a good foundation for what’s to come. You get to know Caroline. You start getting glimpses of what’s to come down the road, esp for Caroline. You see Caroline and Jack fall in love.

Conscience: is the hardest to get past thru. While you continue to get flashback to see how Caroline and Jack’s relationship progress, you get more of what’s happening in the present, what was happening to Caroline, to be exact, and it wasn’t pretty at all. Cecilia did not gloss over any of the atrocities and it was brutal to read.

Sojourn: shows how Caroline is starting to recover. But there’s much more to be done. Caroline and Jack on the one hand continue to be solid in their relationship as you read thru the flashback.

One the one hand, I personally am glad that I got to read this in its entirety as I think it enhanced the emotions reading the 3 books within it one after another. But on the other, now here I am, about to ramble, to try to express how much I LOVE this series…

The storyline alone gives you such fodder for contemplation. Cecilia categorized this as an erotic political thriller. I couldn’t agree more. This is romance, yes; romance layered with heat, suspense, and action. There’s also a dystopian feel to it that feels contemporary at the same time, especially considering the times the Americans are in at this very moment. It’s fascinating in a disturbing but also inspirational way.

The prologue alone hooks you right in. Immediately, the questions begin. Immediately, you feel the suspense. Immediately, you get a sense of the strength of the characters.

The characters alone give a lot of room for good discussion. After everything I’ll write, I don’t think I’ll be able to cover everything I want to, which goes to show the care that Cecilia took in developing them.

I love how Caroline and Jack are on equal footing. Both are smart and intelligent, passionate in their beliefs albeit not always coming from the same side, have very strong commitment to their civic duties, and confident with and despite of their personal insecurities. Caroline with her feminist inclination, surrounded by similarly strong friends, embodies, in my mind, what young girls should aspire to be. And Jack is the man that a woman like Caroline deserves. So what you get then is the ultimate power couple.

Their times together are impressive, witty, and explosive. There’s something to be said about the maturity of these characters. There’s a formality to some of their exchange that just seems fitting but also very heartfelt. While pretentious if taken out of context, it’s appropriate, for lack of better word. And as much as I almost want to say that things moved at a sluggish pace at times, I also realized I needed to read them all to get a full sense of their story. I suppose my anxiety didn’t help in that I just want to speed things up.

And with all the things happening, not only did I fell in love with Caroline and Jack, but I became just as enamored with Caroline’s friends. My heart broke over and over for Caroline and her friends the way things were unfolding in the present. The brutality was hard to stomach at times. I was getting just as angry and impassioned. I seriously hope one character will get his comeuppance in the hands of both Caroline and Jack.

Considering how this book ended, which means it’s the end of Sojourn, you know their fight has barely started. No matter what’s in store for Caroline and Jack, they’ve already made their marks in my mind. I bet I will cringe, I will swoon, I will be anxious, I will be smiling, I will be a lot of things, and none and all of that will matter because I’m already sold right from the prologue, and I just want to be taken thru their journey in all its glory.

My, my, my I think this is one of the longest reviews I have ever written! Yet I feel like I can talk about it some more. But I won’t. I’ve subjected you enough to my ramblings…

I say just friggin’ read it!!!!!

REVIEW: Strong Signal (Cyberlove, Book 1) by Megan Erickson & Santino Hassell

***NOTE: (Updated Mar 2018) Leaving the review not because of Santino but because of Megan. This is no way a denial of those hurt by Santino and and I actually do want to give a shout out to all the brave souls who bared themselves and told their stories. May they find the healing they deserve.)

RATING:

Blurb
I was counting down the months until the end of my deployment. My days were spent working on military vehicles, and I spent my nights playing video games that would distract me until I could leave Staff Sergeant Garrett Reid behind.
That was when I met him: Kai Bannon, a fellow gamer with a famous stream channel.

I never expected to become fixated on someone who'd initially been a rival. And I'd never expected someone who oozed charm to notice me—a guy known for his brutal honesty and scowl. I hadn't planned for our online friendship to turn into something that kept me up at night—hours of chatting evolving into filthy webcam sessions.
But it did. And now I can't stop thinking about him. In my mind, our real life meeting is perfect. We kiss, we fall into bed, and it's love at first sight.
Except, like most things in my life, it doesn't go as planned.

Strong Signal is a standalone, full-length novel with no cliffhanger

Review

This has nothing to do with the book per se but I still want to say it anyway. Before this book, I just finished one that I knew was gonna give me a serious case of book hangover. And when that happens, I’m less forgiving of my very next read, which I feel is unfair. I knew I needed to shake up my headspace pronto, and what better way to do that than switch it up a bit. Enter Strong Signal. And sweet mommah!!! Book hangover be gone! All kinds of smexiness be in! I practically inhaled this book! I read this in under a day, and that says a lot for me!

Not a first Megan read but def a first Santino read *asks self why that is*. What a sweet treat, indeed!

Kai’s and Garrett’s worlds collided all for the love of online gaming. They are quite opposite at first glance but not really. Yes, they’re both gamers, but more than that, once they got to know each other, there’re a lot of parallels in their lives, including their personalities. It’s like seeing a coin from 2 sides, in the end, still the same coin.

Garrett is gruff, introverted at his core, but with a heart of gold. Oh, and can he talk the dirrrrty!*g*

VIA
Kai is just as introverted but more than that, he’s dealing with a serious medical issue. His online world is the only avenue that allows him contact. Oh, but he can be just as naughty!*g*

VIA

Interacting online is one thing. The digital world, after all, takes away some vulnerability that one can’t help but feel when face-to-face. Taking their relationship to the next level was sweet to see. There is so much familiarity already yet so many things to learn still. I fell for their chemistry right from onset. I’ve read other online smexy times in my romance reads, but somehow, theirs just took it on a different level. *fans self*

If I have any qualms about this one, albeit tiny, I wish it was longer, but then again maybe it was just me. Also, things felt a tad rushed in the end. I wished certain resolution could’ve been expanded a bit for it not to feel too convenient… just sayin…

Ultimately, I got what I needed, a sweet sexy read that felt genuine and honest. I will definitely recommend this to everyone.

*runs to device to take a peek at my other Megan and Santino books*
