Baseball isn’t supposed to be a game of life and death…
The summer that Chase Stern entered my life, I was seventeen. The daughter of a legend, the Yankees were my family, their stadium my home, their dugout my workplace. My focus was on the game. Chase … he started out as a distraction. A distraction with sex appeal poured into every inch of his six foot frame. A distraction who played like a god and partied like a devil.
I tried to stay away. I couldn’t.
Then, the team started losing.
Women started dying.
And everything in my world broke apart.

RATING:
I’ll cut to the chase and say, to the point of sounding ungrateful, that this is not quite a fave AT read for me…There were things that worked, but for a change, there were some that definitely didn't...
This is how my brain processed this as I progressed thru the pages:
“What is this?”
“What is happening?”
“Aw, Chase!”
“Seriously, this is where AT wants to take these characters?”
“Oh no, something is not working in my brain”
“But wait, this is AT!”
“Aw, Chase!”
“Elle, relax, or don’t. Stay on edge, it’s ok, this is AT, remember?”
“Just expect the unexpected. AT always surprises you, remember?”
“Aw, Chase!”
“Wait, wut?!?”
“Why, why, why are things going down this way???”
“Ayah!”
“Aw, Chase!”
“Wait, wut??”
“Huh!”
“Aw, Chase!”
“Hmmm…”
Ty and Chase met for the first time right about when Ty was just turning 18. There’s an attraction but there shouldn’t be. Regardless, they found their way towards each other. Things are going well, until they weren’t… Fast forward 4 yrs later, things have changed, but have they really? At the same time, something else is happening bigger than them….
Baseball plays a big part in this story, duh! Like the 3rd character big, which I appreciated… I’m not really a sports person, but I understand some. I liked the sports angle. Where my brain struggled is where AT took Ty and Chase’s relationship. If this weren’t in the hands of AT, I would’ve had serious doubts, quite frankly. But luckily for Ty and Chase, it was, so there’s that. It was a little unsettling how it started. It was uncomfortable when they found their second chance. It was questionable how they went about it. And I was just nervous about a lot of things, which made me guarded for a good amount of time; so guarded that as much as I understood Ty’s feelings, I didn’t understand her most of her actions. For the first time in my AT read, I found a h whose flaws I couldn’t overlook. Even when it was kinda’ justified by the end in a roundabout way, and despite the depth of her feelings, I unfortunately just couldn’t.
But one thing I definitely could and have overlooked was Chase’s flaws. He made mistakes but every ounce of his feelings leapt thru the pages for me, and I just adored him for that. Another thing I can’t deny, seeing this is AT, is the heat. Enough said. Lastly, again, seeing this is AT, the writing is beautiful, insightful and heartfelt. And for that, while this is not the best AT read for me, is why I remain a fan.
