The Isn’t You, Baby

by K. Webster War & Peace #4
Publication Date: October 25, 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Dark, Romance

this-isnt-you-baby-front-only

I was a pawn. Weak and someone easily manipulated. To be played with as he saw fit. Until YOU. YOU shone light in my now dark world. It was YOU who made me smile. For the first time in this game, I had hope. All because of YOU. The more powerful pieces on the board, however, were a threat to YOU and me. They would win at any cost. Two kings ruling with an iron fist. Allies or opponents, it was hard to tell. YOU promised to save me. Told me we would win. But then I was on the wrong side of the board. This isn't YOU, baby. And I don't know what to do. The game is almost over and I'm counting on YOU. Tick, tock...

Warning: This Isn’t You, Baby is a dark romance. Strong sexual themes, excessive drug use, and violence, which could trigger emotional distress, are found in this story. If you are sensitive to dark themes, then this story is not for YOU. This story will make YOU smile. This story will make YOU angry. This story will make YOU crazy. I hope YOU love it, baby.

EXCERPT REVEAL: Royally Screwed by Emma Chase

rs-fb-1018-ad-1

     royally-screwed-for-web

Emma Chase, New York Times bestselling author of the Tangled Series & Legal Briefs Series, returns with the first of three sizzling standalone books about a family of racy, irresistible Royals.

Nicholas Arthur Frederick Edward Pembrook, Crowned Prince of Wessco, aka “His Royal Hotness”, is wickedly charming, devastatingly handsome, and unabashedly arrogant—hard not to be when people are constantly bowing down to you. Then, one snowy night in Manhattan, the prince meets a dark haired beauty who doesn’t bow down. Instead, she throws a pie in his face. Nicholas wants to find out if she tastes as good as her pie, and this heir apparent is used to getting what he wants. *** Dating a prince isn’t what waitress Olivia Hammond ever imagined it would be. There’s a disapproving queen, a wildly inappropriate spare heir, relentless paparazzi, and brutal public scrutiny. While they’ve traded in horse drawn carriages for Rolls Royces and haven’t chopped anyone’s head off lately—the royals are far from accepting of this commoner. But to Olivia—Nicholas is worth it. *** Nicholas grew up with the whole world watching, and now Marriage Watch is in full force. In the end, Nicholas has to decide who he is, but more importantly, who he wants to be: a King... or the man who gets to love Olivia forever.

The next week is blissfully uneventful. I address Palace business during the day, and spend my nights with Olivia—which are so much more than blissful. While I work, she relaxes like I want her to. She walks the grounds and has found a friend in Franny. They’ve had lunch together a few times, which doesn’t exactly thrill me, but at the very least, I know she’s safe with Simon’s wife. Franny, and her forked tongue, will protect Olivia from the Lucy-types looking to wound her with their half-truths. On the rare occasions my brother is sober, he becomes increasingly agitated—like he’s unable to sit still, to stand his own company, or any sound that resembles silence. Finally, he decides to throw a welcome home party for himself. I’m in my bathroom preparing for his royal yacht party, just showered with a towel around my hips, scraping the last of the shaving cream off my jaw, when Olivia appears in the doorway. I thought she was lovely from the first moment I saw her. But here, now—her bare, soft skin wrapped in a pink silk robe, her face glowing with well-rested happiness…she’s magnificent. “So…do you guys have like a gift shop or a convenience store around here?” I laugh. “A gift shop?” She holds up a light blue disposable razor. “I’m out of razors. This one’s so dull I could run it over my tongue without drawing blood.” “Let’s not test that theory. I like your tongue too much.” I wipe my chin with a towel. “I can have the staff bring one to your room.” The devil on my shoulder—and the angel too—smack me upside the head. And they whisper a much better idea. “Or…I could help you out.” Her brows draw together. “Help me out? I can’t use your razor.” “No, definitely not—you’d cut yourself to ribbons.” I finger the sharp, heavy straight blade. “What I mean is…I could shave for you.” Her eyes darken, the way they do when she’s right on the edge—right before she comes. And she moves closer to me. “Do you…want to do that?” My gaze drags down, down, over every sumptuous inch of her body. “Oh, yes.”

Blurb

Love. The most powerful force in existence, but also the most ruthless. Cunning and deceptive. Man’s greatest Achilles heel. Leaving all who embrace it weak and vulnerable. At least that’s how Dom-for-hire Max Kelley sees it, after the love of his life knocked him on his ass. A brutal blow that not only stole his breath, but decimated his ability to trust. Turning him cold and cynical. The TKO he never saw coming. Love. A mistake Max won’t ever make again. Meaning no more relationships—not exactly a hardship. Just the thought of dating makes him queasy, and one of the reasons he doms for a living. To sexually engage without the poison of intimacy. The other reason? To keep his demons sated. With whips and chains, and scandalous kink. A fiery mix that always hits the spot. That is, until a bright-eyed beauty walks into his life and refuses to leave. Sean Matthews. College senior and flirt extraordinaire. Max’s newest—and greenest—client sub. Man, is he delicious; able to push Max’s buttons, able to make him crave the things he knows he shouldn’t. Sound the alarm, this can only mean trouble. Unfortunately, deterring Sean proves virtually impossible, and now Max finds himself at a crossroads. Man up and kick his favorite sub to the curb… or succumb to his own caged desires.

Warning: This erotic, gay, BDSM romance contains intensely explicit sexual scenes both inside and out of the dungeon.

Review

RATING:

As a fan of the Upending Tad series, you bet your patutie I was excited when Kora first announced that Max and Sean will get their story. (Reminds me that I haven't actually posted my review of that series here on the blog, so I should correct that soon). From that series, getting a glimpse of these 2, you can't help but wonder what's going on behind the dynamics that you're seeing between them.

So as a fan of that series, while this can complete stand alone, my review of this book will be tinged with my feelings about these 2 from that series. For me there's just no way around it.

This is the beginning of Max and Sean's story. You get Max' history and it shows what happened to make Max the person he is, the person I got a glimpse of in the other series. To see this 180 transformation for Max was quite emotional and sad in a way, but as you get to the present, kinda delish at the same time. By the time he meets Sean, he's fully transformed to the Dom he is.

Now Sean, I didn't to expect to fall in love with him as much as I thought I would. Of course I only saw only a small fraction of Sean's personality in the other series. Here, I got to see the witty, funny and flirty side of Sean. I saw the brat that's the right match for Max. But more than that, I saw the maturity, in a sense, arising from a messed up childhood. Seeing him reconcile some of his thoughts and feelings with Max' non-judgmental help, it showed a lot of depth.

Seeing this is only the first book, we're really not quite at the romance part. It's about getting to know Max and Sean individually and how the attraction is developing between them all within the context of the BDSM scene; some parts, I would admit, did push my limits. If you're like me and it's not a theme you tend to read, consider yourself educated more, hehe... And with Kora highly skilled with edging in her writing, prepare for one intense hot read.Hot dang! The droll exchange between these 2 (ok, of Max and Scott as well.. well, I cannot not mention Scott, hello! Oh, of Sean and his friend, Jonah, too!) coupled with the simmering heat between them... ooomph... talk about lethal combo!

Seriously can't wait for bk 2! At this point, I'm prepared to make a space for Max and Sean, next to Tad and Scott, in my fave couples category. Ready!!!

Neighbors.Teaser4.jpg

Excerpt
It was no joke.
Liam had been waiting in the lobby for her at nine o'clock, sharp. Liam Edenhoff – “but everyone calls me Eden” – he'd introduced himself again to her before guiding her out to a taxi he'd had waiting.
She felt a little nauseous. She'd chugged down another half bottle of wine, and some crème de menthe, before heading downstairs to meet him. She'd almost talked herself out of going, but she'd made the mistake of telling her roommate Tori about the whole fiasco. Apparently, Katya owed it to women everywhere (and Tori in particular) to explore this opportunity to its fullest. She'd all but been shoved out the apartment, the door slammed and locked in her face.

“Nervous?” Liam Eden-whatever-his-name-was asked her as the cab slowed to a crawl.
“Nope,” Katya's voice sounded overly loud.
“Liar. Tonight is gonna be an interesting night, angel cake.”
“Stop calling me that.”
“What's your last name?”
“None of your business.”
“Okay then – when the gang bang starts, I'll tell them to call you Katya X.”
She couldn't stop the blush from happening that time. Liam burst out laughing, then soothed the sting by grabbing her hand.
Even when they got out of the cab, he didn't let go of her. Normally, she would've been uncomfortable with a stranger assuming such a familiarity with her, but this time, she was thankful for it. She held onto him tightly as they walked down a crowded street. Then they turned into an alley, and his gang bang joke didn't seem so funny. He led her to a plain door, above which a simple, small, neon sign spelled out “The Garden”. Outside were several small groups of people, chatting and smoking. Some of them called out greetings to him, all of them using his nickname, but a large and scary looking bouncer addressed him very properly.
“Hey, Mr. Edenhoff, wasn't expecting you in tonight. Any problems?”
“Nope, just bringing a friend to show her the place, let her see what I do for a living.”
All the blood was quickly rushing from Katya's limbs, pooling somewhere in her stomach. None of this was a joke. He really did own the place, that much was obvious.
As Liam led her through the door, though, Katya actually felt a surge of confidence. She was still nervous, still more than a little scared, but she was okay with it. Liam seemed like a nice guy, he wasn't going to take her into some dark room and insert foreign objects into her orifices. She could leave whenever she wanted to, whenever it got too uncomfortable. Everything was fine, and for once, she was doing something exciting. She'd have something interesting to talk about at work the next day.
Finally.

Review

RATING:

Well, well, well...

It occurred to me after reading this that despite owning several of Stylo's books, I've only read one other before this. Interestingly enough, it was enough for me to gravitate towards Stylo's works because even with just one book, I find that I like her writing style and the way she likes to twist things. Also, with other Goodreads friends enamored with some of her alphahole (alpha a$$hole:D) H's, I'd say, that's more than enough reason.

There are things that gave me conflicting feelings, but I'll point it out now that ultimately, I know for a fact that I would want to read the rest of this duet. Here's why:

First, I'm not a fan of this trope where there's more than 2 people involved. If I paid better attention to the blurb, I probably would have hesitated. But seeing this is Stylo, I want to know where she's gonna take these characters.

Second, and probably the part that gave me the most conflict, I didn't really agree with most of the characters' actions nor did I buy some of their feelings and thoughts. But I have to give credit because I feel like individually, Stylo actually gave me strong protagonists (and I kinda use that term loosely). From Katya's perspective, I suppose you can consider this her sexual awakening. I've come close to judging her a few times but to do so felt like slut-shaming her so I didn't want to go there. She did take risks. In the end though, I get where she's coming from, somewhat. To be that lost, I get the need to learn one's self better. Did I fully buy it? Hmmm...

Liam, the first spoke in the wheel, is funny, sweet and very easy-going. It's hard not to fall for him. He had the right personality to bring out the fun, risque side of Katya. Now, Wulfric, the second spoke in the wheel, you get your classic alpha H; your take-charge kinda' fella, closed off and fighting off feelings to hide his vulnerability, arrogant and rude but you get a peek of a softer side. It's hard not to want to be the woman to crack his veneer. But to put these 2 in the context of the relationship, neither one felt worthy.

Which bring me to my third point, the dynamics among these 3, while uneven, totally makes sense in my head. I laughed even when I was scratching my head. I bought the heat even when I'm confused and not buying the attraction fully. I started rooting for one even when I don't understand the attraction. And as much as I didn't want to root for the other, I felt like I should.

And finally, the fourth point. In the beginning especially, I couldn't make sense of what's happening. Then I thought I had some inkling as to where the conflict is gonna come from and whatever is lurking underneath. But then, I got too distracted seeing how things are playing out that I forgot my theories so by the end, the last 10% had my head spinning. And for Stylo to end it the way she did, I'm actually intrigued. I want to see how she would redeem these characters. I mean, that is, if she would... I'm not so sure anymore... How will you, Stylo? How?!?!

GAH!!!

And for that, I shall eagerly await... *thrums fingers*

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ... forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.

Synopsis:

Edwin Allen Mercer I want them all to read my words. And they do. Every last blood-stained sentence, they've read and praised me for. They love the gore and violence, the realness. And I get a sense of power with it all because I know a secret: the victims in my books—they’re real and have all died on my table. And maybe that’s why the last book had such awful reviews. Murder is, after all, a dirty little thing. Some can stomach it. Others can’t. My answer to those reviews: find a woman to co-author with. To be the next pathetic character in my book. Pity she’s so pretty.

Miranda Cross All I’ve ever wanted was to be successful as a writer so when I was offered the opportunity to co-author a book with my idol, EA Mercer, I jumped at the chance. He’s beautiful and a literary genius, but something about him makes my stomach knot. And maybe it’s my overactive imagination making my hairs stand on end when he walks up behind me. After all, these wicked little words we’re typing are only fiction. They’re only fiction…
