REVIEW

RATING:

Before anything else, let me just say that this is another case of “it’s not you, it’s me” sadly. I honestly don’t know what happened. While Gia is a new-to-me author, Marni isn’t. I’ve highly enjoyed Marni’s previous works. So I’m thinking this is just me.

It’s a good story, with lots of good source of angst, suspense and all kinds of hotness. The h (eek, I don’t even remember her name... *reads blurb* oh yes, Andi), running away from a terrible situation and the H, Clay, running away from his present as well. Despite all the ugliness in their lives, they realized they have each other. They ran, they tried, they failed, they succeeded but at a high price, and they fixed things.

Both characters are layered but I felt detached from them and all the events happening in their lives. Rather than being immersed in the scenes, it felt like seeing things from a bird’s eye view. Tried as I could but sadly, the feelings stayed til the end.

Looking at GR reviews, I’m in the minority, and I’m glad I am.

A New Englander at heart, she now lives in Sarasota, Florida, with her husband and their two dogs, who have been characters in her books. When she’s not nose deep in her laptop, working on her next novel, she’s scouring for chocolate, sipping wine, traveling, or devouring fabulous books.

What happens when the internet's favorite playboy falls in love?
I have the best job in the world. Date beautiful women and write about it.

But here is the catch. My boss wants me to share the show with a woman co-host. And he wants that woman to be my best friend and co-worker, Margo.
I’ll date beautiful women and she’ll date hot men. Sounds fair enough.
So now I have to watch her fake date hot men. I used to love going home with a different woman every night, but suddenly this isn’t as fun. Seeing Margo with anyone else is driving me crazy.
And the more time I spend with her working on the show, the less I want to keep our relationship in the friends’ zone. And the harder it is to stop myself from imagining her bent over the copier.

EXCERPT:

“Thank god you live on the ground floor,” I say, as I rummage for her keys in her bag with one hand while keeping her from falling with the other. It’s not that I haven’t been to Margo’s place before, but when we hang out it’s usually at work functions or the occasional bar, and at the moment I can’t shake the feeling that I’m intruding a little.
“You know, you’re really f*cking hot,” she slurs, giggling. My c^ck stirs at the brush of her lips so close to my neck, her warm breath against my skin. I have to shake it off.
“And you’re really f*cking drunk,” I reply with a forced laugh, as the key finally catches and I kick the door open.
“No…I mean it,” she says as I step into her apartment, still holding her in my arms. “You’re like…the most beautiful man.”
“That’s very sweet of you,” I say, as I open a few wrong doors (closet, bathroom) until I find her bedroom. I walk in and lay her down on the bed, then pull away, setting her bag on the night table. “You should probably just rest a bit, let it pass.” I unlace her boots and ease them off gently, setting them on the floor before straightening up to go. This feels familiar, although I haven’t carried a too-drunk Margo home from a party and put her to bed since our undergrad years. “You need anything? Water, or—”
“Yeah.” Margo smiles.
“What?”
Instead of answering, she mischievously beckons me closer. I look at her, dress rolling up around her thighs, twisting her body up in the sheets, my imagination starting to whirl a little.
“Come here!” she yelps impatiently.
This could mean trouble—the problem is, I like trouble. I groan and go nearer to the bed.
“Closer,” she giggles, and I’m taken with the smile, the way she grinds into the bed…
“What?”
Her hand pulls on my shirt, her smile goes and instead her mouth is open now, weakened like she’s preparing to kiss me. I could so easily fall into her here, so easily bring my mouth onto hers, put my own hands under her clothes. I can almost taste her, appetite stirring…
Except being a real man doesn’t just mean knowing when to make a move, it also means knowing when you shouldn’t.
“Nice try,” I say, pulling back.
Margo laughs and pounds her fists onto the bed with disappointment.
“But I need to see what’s under your shirt. You still got those Grand Canyon abs, I bet.”
“Ok. That’s my cue to go,” I say, half-out the door. “See you tomorrow.”
“No! Come on! Please! I remember the view was f*cking amazing. Just a little peek. A tiny little peek for old time’s sake. Come on, Owen! Don’t be an a$$hole. You know you want to show it off.”
I look back at her, hand on the doorknob, and find myself laughing.
“Happy now?” I say, pulling up my shirt a little way.
Margo screams and falls back onto her pillows laughing.
“I knew it! Just as perfect as that night you got locked out of the girl’s dorm,” she says, as I close the door and leave.
When I get back to my car, I’m still smiling.

REVIEW: Worth of Waste (DeLuca Duet, Book 2) by Bethany-Kris

BLURB

DeLuca Duet, Part Two

The Chicago Mob is the same as it has always been—violent, greedy, and excessive. The Outfit families have turned their backs when they were needed the most one too many times, but Dino DeLuca didn’t expect anything different.

His whole life has been lived for the Outfit—for his family.

He has a whole new set of reasons to live and fight now.

Karen Martin makes Dino change all the rules.

He’s finally ready to show everyone just how much waste is truly worth in the mafia, and just how far one will go for freedom from it all.

He’s learned these lessons well.

Too well.

Author’s Note: The DeLuca Duet is a standalone duet with a HEA ending that can be read independently.

REVIEW

RATING:

Wow, this was sooo not an easy road for Dino and Karen!

This picks up right where the first book ended. Right from the get go, I wondered how these 2 will ever find their happy ending. Dino, as you learned from the first book, has not had an easy life. And he was in prison, for cryin’ out loud!

But when there's a will, there's a way, as they say. Lucky for Dino, Karen loves him unconditionally. It allowed Dino to plan knowing that Karen is there for him. It’s poignant and commendable to see how these 2 fought for what they want, especially Dino.

Dino’s a made guy but he’s not high enough in the pecking order. So Dino has very little control over his own life. And to have a family member above him as vile as his uncle, it was a harsh life. Karen just wants to be with Dino. But as an outsider that Dino wants to stay as an outsider, it’s not easy street for her either.

This might sound weird but Dino and Karen’s story made me melancholic. For a couple of people who wants the simple things, it was anything but. The measures that Dino had to take to get to their HEA had me jumpy the whole time because it truly felt the rug can be pulled underneath them at any second. Along the way, their times together felt so limited that you can’t help but savor it the way they did.

Their HEA ending was probably the best outcome anyone can ask for given their circumstances. I’m just glad these 2 got to that point in one piece. Sigh…

BLOG TOUR: The Cad and The Co-Ed by Penny Reid & LH Cosway

sbpr-cad-coed-bt

The Cad and The Co-Ed, a quirky and sexy romantic comedy from Penny Reid & L.H. Cosway is available now!!

thecadandco-edcover

THE CAD
Bryan Leech is a cad.
Or, he *was* a cad.
No one is quite certain.
Once the quintessential playboy, Bryan claims he’s done with wild parties and weekend benders. No more one night stands leading to mornings he can’t remember; no more binges and blackouts; no more exploits plastered all over the tabloids and rag sheets. According to Bryan, he’s cleaning up his act.
The only problem is, no one believes him.
THE CO-ED
Eilish Cassidy never thought she’d be a mother at nineteen or still in college at twenty-four. Cut off from every member of her family except her favorite cousin, she’s finally managed to put her life back together. Stronger and wiser, Eilish enters her last semester of university determined to stand on her own. Now she just needs to find an internship.
The only problem is, her best option—by far—places her directly in the path of her son’s father, and he doesn’t remember her at all.
THE PLAN
Bryan is determined to prove he’s changed. Eager to settle down with the right woman, he’s got his sights set on the gorgeous redhead who seems terribly familiar.
Eilish is determined to hide her secret. She’ll do anything to keep her child safe, even if that means ignoring her own wishes and desires.
But what happens when Bryan starts to remember? And what will it take for Bryan to convince the girl he forgot that she’s unforgettable?

REVIEW

RATING:

As I write my review, I put myself thru the exercise of going thru parts of a book to try to remember if there are things that I questioned or didn’t enjoy at the end of it all, and when I can’t think of any, that’s how I know it’s a 5-star read.

Such is the case with this 3rd standalone installment by Penny Reid and LH Cosway. I’ve still yet to read the 1st book (for shame!) but I can see that this series just keeps getting better.

Bryan and Eilish have quite the interesting start. It’s not quite second-chance rom but I suppose it is their version of second-chance. A one-sided one-night stand that went awry really fast, with quite an “evidence” as proof. Five years later, their paths crossed again.

First off, I love the humor and the sentiment. If this were a movie, it would’ve been one of those well-crafted comedy-drama flicks.

I love being both in their heads. They’re both so funny. I love seeing their vulnerabilities and how that translated with their words and actions in a way that I was constantly cheering them on, even in the midst of their misunderstanding. They both have to go thru their respective growth and I love the path it took them.

Eilish is a good h. I understood her motivation. But I must say, I’m all about Bryan. I could’ve stayed in his head the entire time and I would’ve been ok. Not that Eilish was a foregone conclusion; it’s just that Bryan had more at stake, so to speak. He had me cracking up and at the same time, I just wanna put him in a bear hug.

And if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll be happy to hear that you’ll see familiar names. Sean, in particular, continues to steal the scenes, as far as I’m concerned. Oh, Sean! These rugby fellas, I tell ya, you gotta love them! I feel one will be getting his turn soon. And if I may just say one last thing, I enjoyed the headings of each chapter. Those Twitter convos alone got me smiling goofily.

So far, I only have 3 fave author collabs, and Penny and LH are definitely one of them... If it’s up to me, they can keep writing this series and I’ll keep reading. I totally heart this series!

REVIEW: Run by Kristi Beckhart

Run
by Kristi Beckhart

Blurb

Single mom.
Ph.D. candidate.
Cocktail waitress.
I didn’t plan it this way, but sometimes things happen.
I didn’t plan to leave my family and friends behind, but sometimes circumstances change.
I didn’t plan to fall for anyone, but then I met Jonathan Drazen’s friend, Sam. He wants things I’m not sure I can give, but I can’t seem to stay away.
I lost control of my life before, but I took it all back.
Until my past threatens to show its ugly face and ruin everything I’ve worked so hard for.
My name is Yvonne, but you can call me Eve, and I vow to never lose control again.

Review

RATING:

I tell ya, CD Reiss’ Drazen world is the gift that keeps on giving. From Jonathan and Monica’s world came a world of possibilities, thanks to CD and these authors, most of them new, who took on pockets of Jonathan and Monica’s lives to create stories different and refreshing on their own.

Kristi took on Yvonne, Monica’s friend, otherwise known as Eve to her friends, and her relationship that blossomed with one of Jonathan’s friend, Sam. Whodathunk! WTG, Kristi!

The timeline for this story ran almost concurrently with that of Jonathan and Monica’s. Eve is a single mom who has a lot on her plate. In came Sam, the distraction that she doesn’t necessarily need, but just like with any good distraction, all that doesn’t matter. I liked how Kristi portrayed Eve. It’s how I imagined she will be. She’s got chutzpah. She’s strong and very independent. Interestingly enough, where Kristi took Sam is what surprised me, in a good way. This reimagining by Kristi, as a whole, surprised me, in a good way. Eve and Sam together are quite delish. The heat, I felt it alright *g* It’s insta-lust, but who cares!:D

As a novella, it’s a good story that can stand on its own but Kristi also laid out a good foundation to expand their story. Giving me a bit of Sam’s POV at the end was enticing and that last nugget of info was a nice hook. Depending where Kristi takes this, it has the potential to be a remarkable read.

If you can’t tell yet, this is coming from a reader who’s really familiar with, and a huge fan, at that, of CD’s series that spawned this. On that note, my review probably felt out of context, esp if you’re not familiar with CD’s series. But if nothing else, just know that I really enjoyed this quick read. For a debut work, I’d say Kristi did alright, or more than alright I should say. As she grows with her writing, it will only get much better.

About the Author

Kristi Beckhart is a hopeless romantic who lives in the upper Midwest and likes to write sexy books. Story ideas have lived in her heart for a long time, and fanfic seemed a good place to start. Especially Drazen fanfic based on the characters from CD Reiss' Submission series.

When not reading or writing, she can be found either on social media or exploring the great outdoors with the puppy. Fan of books, cooking and classical music. Lover of all things coffee, tacos ... and sometimes a little whiskey.

THE DEEP END - Tour teaser 2
  EXCERPT:

As he slowly closed the door behind him and moved his eyes to look through the room, taking it in, she watched them get wide. They dropped to her and his amusement was clear. Not only radiating from his gaze but twitching his lips. Another unusual—and unacceptable—reaction. He thought this was funny. She hoped like fuck she had the opportunity to prove him wrong. She crossed her arms on her chest and slightly put out a foot, like she was about to start tapping her toe. In the wrap dress she wore, she knew this opened the overlap, not exposing anything, but the promise for him was impossible to resist. His attention dropped to her legs. “In the playrooms,” she began with a snap, and his gaze cut to hers, “I want eye contact. Unless otherwise instructed, you should not only feel free to look me directly in the eyes, if I’m in your line of sight or I’m not giving you something that your body’s natural reaction would make it difficult to meet my gaze, I require it.” She stood there staring as he did nothing but dip his chin in acknowledgment. Cheeky. Exceptionally cheeky. Fabulous. “Unless I’ve asked for their silence or for them to ask for leave to speak, I also require my toys to respond when they’re spoken to. Even if it’s only a ‘yes, Mistress,’ or ‘no, Mistress.’” His stance relaxed, like he was settling in at the beginning of a show he found vaguely intriguing, and his deep rumble of a voice bounced like boulders through the room. “Yes, Mistress.” Christ, even his voice declared his challenge. “Excellent,” she allowed. “Your name?” “Olivier,” he answered. French. Also unusual, at least in this country. And interesting. She liked it a great deal. She studied him. He let her, holding her eyes. “I’m Mistress Amélie,” she eventually informed him. “I know. You got a lotta fans out there…Mistress.” The hesitation over him saying “Mistress” gave less of the impression he was testing her and more of the strange impression the word was unpracticed when, with any experienced sub, it would slip right off their tongue. She made no comment to that. “There are things we should go over,” she remarked. “Right,” he stated, his big body adjusting again, now like he was settling in further, intent on giving her the same attention he would a flight attendant who gave the safety address. That being no more than a courtesy. She fought the shiver his actions created but allowed the irritation. “Your safe word is kitten,” she stated. “Yes, Mistress.” “You’re open to any kind of play,” she went on. “Yes, Mistress.” “It’s important and now’s the time to share should there be anything you wish me to shy away from, Olivier. Especially as this is the first time I’ve played with you.” Something in his eyes flashed. Blue eyes that were the color of nothing and everything. Not sky. Not sea. Not midnight. A pure blue that only existed in the unchartable depths of a rainbow. She felt that flash snake up between her thighs, taking residence in her womb. He wanted this conversation done so she would play with him. He wanted the preliminaries over so they’d get to the good stuff. He wanted her. She stared into those blue eyes and for a moment felt mesmerized. For God’s sake, Leigh, she berated herself in an effort to pull it together. Rainbow? “Olivier,” she prompted. “I’m open to anything,” he confirmed.

    Kristin Ashley - headshot

About Kristen Ashley:

Kristen Ashley was born in Gary, Indiana, USA and nearly killed her mother and herself making it into the world, seeing as she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck (already attempting to accessorise and she hadn't taken her first breath!). Her mother said they took Kristen away, put her Mom back in her room, her mother looked out the window, and Gary was on fire (Dr. King had been assassinated four days before). Kristen's Mom remembered thinking it was the end of the world. Quite the dramatic beginning. Nothing's changed. Kristen grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana and has lived in Denver, Colorado and the West Country of England. Thus, she's blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her family was (is) loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write. They all lived together on a very small farm in a small farm town in the heartland. She grew up with Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon and Whitesnake (and the wardrobes that matched). Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music, clothes and love was a good way to grow up. And as she keeps growing, it keeps getting better.
