“Don’t Look Back in Anger”

In one night, I lost five years of my life. Here’s what I know …

I was homeless.

I’m a recovering drug addict.

My inked skin crawls from lustful eyes.

I have a serious aversion to women.

My gay partner is a home wrecker.

I own a gun and I’m a damn good shot.

I’m a makeup artist, but it’s an insult to my talent.

I’ve never wanted to possess anything except my Ducati … until I met Darby.

Now here’s what I know since that day in the ER when she pieced me back together … nothing—but a few random thoughts.

My new “friend” is distracting, clingy, and obsessed with acronyms, emojis, and phrases like “breakfast soul mates.”

I didn’t want to like her, but she crawled under my skin and swallowed me whole. Now we’re best friends and she’s my new addiction. I'd drink her from a shot glass, snort her up my nose, or inject her into my veins if I could. What I won’t do … is ever tell her that.

She doesn’t know me … I don’t know me. When those missing years come back, I think she will hate me … I think I will hate me.

My parents named me Patrick Roth, and this is my story.

“He’s a makeup artist Gemmie recommended. But he has not, nor ever will be ‘throwing his hat into the ring.’”

“Married?” She grins as if the thought of me being someone’s mistress pleases her. It’s possible all my living relatives are a bit twisted.

I shake my head and smirk. “No, Nana, he’s not married. He’s … gay.”

She throws her head back and slaps her hand against her chest in a fit of laughter. “Oh my goodness!”

“Why is his sexual preference so hysterical?”

“Oh dear…” she wipes the corners of her eyes “…it’s just you have the worst luck in love. When did you find out?”

I reach over and grab a tissue from the sofa table and hand it to her, rolling my eyes. Then I proceed to tell her everything, not leaving out one single detail—including my magnetic attraction to him that shouldn’t be sexual but is.

“Well, dear, you’ve hit the jackpot.”

“What? How have you come to that conclusion from everything I’ve told you?”

“A guy friend who’s gay? I hear they’re every girl’s dream. Except, from the sounds of things, Trick needs to gay up a little more and stop confusing unsuspecting women.”

“Gay up? Who are you?”

She snaps her wrist at me. “I read the tabloids you know.”

“Yeah? Well then you should know that gay doesn’t have a look.”

“That’s the problem. You used to be able to tell by the ear piercing—right for gay left for straight. Or is it the other way around? Anyway, these days everything gets pierced and so it becomes terribly confusing.”

Nana provides nonstop entertainment, and every time I come by to see her I chastise myself for not doing it more often.

“We’re friends, period. And maybe you’re right. If he would ‘gay up’ a little more I might feel the jackpot effect.”

“Yes, shopping, hair, makeup, and chick flicks without competing hormones or competing for the same men.”

“Or wishing he weren’t gay,” I whisper to myself.

She tilts her head to the side, giving me a soft, sympathetic smile. “Or that too, dear.”

Off the bat, I just want to get 4 things out of the way. First, stay away from reviews. I say STOP right here and just dive into this one. But if you can’t, then who am I to stop you hehe (no, I have no spoilers, I don’t think so anyway, but just saying…) Second, as “lovely” as that cover is, where are the tats??? That confused me a little. Third, the blurb! Nice hook! This is Trick’s story, sure. But, um, this is told mostly from Darby’s POV, with a sprinkling of Trick’s. Maybe it was just me… And last, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING, JEWEL?!? Why have I not heard you before???:D

Ok, moving on…

This completely caught me off guard. From the blurb alone, I don’t think I’ve read a similar story line. For me, it was different for sure. I thought it was one thing but it turned out to be another. Once I started reading, I realize the story is actually a lot “simpler” than I thought, and I’m using the word loosely, please bear in mind, coz no, it’s not that “simple”. Which brings me to my next point, how much unexpectedly more emotional this is than I anticipated. What a nice surprise indeed!!

Darby has a lonely existence with hardly any emotional support except her Nana. Then she met Trick. She’s funny with her self-deprecating thoughts. She feels like she’s a pushover so she’s really trying to fight that and for all that doormat behaviour, she has a bite to her. She acted mature throughout, and I felt every insecure and confident moments.

Trick is all kinds of delish! The way Jewel painted him, he’s got the looks, he’s got the moves. He’s got the tortured artist soul. He’s got quite a past. He can be rude, but he was sweet. He’s serious and funny at the same time. He knows how to take it, and he definitely knows how to give it… I swear, I fell for his every word… sigh…

It doesn’t often happen unfortunately that I enjoy both H&h in equal measure. I have a higher expectation for my h and let’s face it, I’m a hero-centric romance reader so a H just needs to make me swoon, have that alpha thing going while under the h’s spell. And I feel when a h exceeds my expectation, for me it can make a H shine more. Here, I felt Darby did that, which just made me love Trick more, Oh Trick, swoony sigh… And he does yoga! How can you not love a dude who practices yoga, huh? Swoony sigh…

They have a lot of funny moments, cheesy moments, and heartbreaking moments. There were things that I didn’t think would work but I think I was so vested in these 2 already that as much as I expected more from the big reveal, I could only focused on the emotions… And seriously, I was just as enamored with all the side characters. Gawd, I love Nana!!!

I say just friggin’ give it a try!

Excerpt

There was a group playing quarters on the island and another group lining up shots on the breakfast bar – so not my scene. I just shrugged my shoulders, opened the door, pulled out a bottle of water and, when I turned around to walk back outside, I face-planted into a wall of solid muscle.

“Hand me one?” His voice was smooth and... gruff at the same time. Red-faced, I turned back around and got him his water, glad for the cool respite that the opened refrigerator door offered.

“Here you go.” I could not peel my eyes away from his mouth as he moved the bottle to his lips. They were perfect - beautiful and full in a completely masculine way. I watched, completely fascinated, as his throat moved, downing the water in three or four large gulps. He wiped his mouth with his forearm and I couldn’t help but let my eyes travel up the rest of his arm to his biceps and shoulders – those were the same as his lips – perfect. Amazingly, gorgeously, utterly, divinely perfect. Muscled and tanned, his arms were mouthwatering.

My knees wobbled. My heart thudded. Thousands of butterflies spread their wings in my belly.

“Thanks…” he stared blankly at my face for a minute and I couldn't help but wondering if he liked what he saw. He cleared his throat and roused me from my little daydream where the gorgeous boy is mesmerized by the maybe-a-little-above-average looking girl. That’s when I realized he was asking for my name.

“Maddy. Sorry, my name’s Maddy." I nearly choked on my tongue to get my freaking name out.

Melissa Collins has always been a book worm. Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book. She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher. Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students. Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently. When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it. It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Rick "Ricochet" Brennan served eight years as an elite Marine special ops Force Recon soldier. After an injury, and the terrible memories from that night, he retires and goes to work for his former Command Officer, Howard "Mack" McEvoy, at his training center in Atlanta.

Sanctum MMA appears on the surface to be a normal gym, training elite fighters to be the best. Except each trainer, hand-picked by Mack, possesses a special background that allows Mack to run one of the best-kept secrets in the country.

When twenty-three year old Quinn Wallace finally escapes her abusive husband, she turns to her father’s old Marine Corps buddy, Mack, for help. Broken and skittish, Quinn finds herself surrounded by large, intimidating men— men who could easily overpower her. She avoids them the best she can, but when Rick turns out to be more than just a rough fighter with bruised knuckles, she finds herself wondering if she can allow herself to trust again.

“Hey,” he said calmly. “Why aren’t you resting?” Rick put his hands on her shoulders, gently massaging her arms.
Quinn’s eyes grew large and went to his gloved hands.

F*ck, she hates fighting. Now I know why she looks freaked out.

Rick yanked his hands away and took a step back. “I didn’t mean for you to see me fight, Quinn. I’m sorry.”

To his surprise, Quinn stepped forward, closing the distance Rick had put between them. He watched as she hesitantly lifted her arms, placing her hands on his sweat-slicked chest. Her eyes met his and his breath left in a sharp huff. The fear he had expected to see wasn’t there. No… Quinn’s eyes were dark and glistening with lust.

“I didn’t know that watching you fight would be so comforting. It makes me feel safe, and… turned on,” she murmured. Rick shivered as her hands ran down his torso, moving over each defined muscle until they were resting on either side of his waist.

“Turned on?” Rick swallowed, barely able to speak with Quinn touching him like that. She was only just about healed from the attack. He figured it would be months, if not longer before she’d be interested in pursuing anything physical.

"Yes, turned on.” Quinn’s fingers dug into Rick’s waist, her thumbs making small circles on the ‘v’ shaped ridges of his lower abs. Scorching waves of pleasure rippled down his spine, instantly making his c*ck come to life.

“Jesus,” he muttered softly. Using every last bit of willpower he had, Rick captured Quinn’s wrists, removing her hands from his body. “Not here, doll.” He glanced around, but none of the other fighters were looking their way. Still, he’d kill them if they saw the lust in Quinn’s eyes. That was for him, and him alone.

Quinn pouted, crossing her arms and glaring like a kid denied her favorite candy.

He couldn’t help himself. The sight of this tiny thing trying to look intimidating was funny. Rick laughed. “You’re too much, doll.” The corner of her mouth twitched up—it was just a hint of a smile, but it made Rick’s day. Quinn hadn’t smiled once since his team rescued her. Seeing some of her personality coming back flooded him with emotion.

So this picked up where Friendly Fire ended, as it should. And it’s a fitting end to Quinn and Rick’s story…

After reading part of Heather’s acknowledgment at the end about the things she did differently about this whole story, it made me realize that those are the things that I did think myself wouldn’t have worked for me either as a reader but it totally did! The dual POVs done 3rd-person style to the breaking up the story in 3 parts to the cliffie endings… I actually enjoyed them all.

I also enjoyed all the action ala Tom Clancy movies. And I really enjoyed the suspense parts, constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. At one point, I kept thinking for those boys to just nail the SOB. Seriously!

This time, I was cheering for Quinn the whole time, just wanting her to stay strong and survive. And Rick, oh poor Rick. I think his heart just took a real beating first dealing with all the new emotions and then being put thru the wringer worrying about Quinn the whole time. How can I not love the dude!

I do wish that some scenes were given an additional line or 2 to maintain the pacing. It almost felt like Heather ran out of space to really round out the emotion that a scene was trying to convey. Just my thought, that’s all…

Over all, I’m really happy that I got a chance to read this. For a first Heather read for me, I’m quite pleased with it all. Now, I wonder if those other MMA boys are getting their own story… hmmm…

“Parker.”

I jumped at the sound of my name coming from Martin’s lips and turned to face him. I also, for reasons known only to my subconscious, balled my hands into fists and lifted them between us, like I was prepared for a fist fight or a boxing match.

He studied my defensive posturing and smirked, taking the seat Sam had vacated without asking permission. Meanwhile I glared at him, my mental wall up and prepped, though my hands fell back to my lap. I had to do this because… super-hot boy alert level ten thousand.

“Sandeke,” I said. I knew I sounded ridiculous, like I was greeting a sworn enemy, but I had to be on guard.

His gaze skated over my face then flickered to my hands, still fists, on my lap. Then he gave my hands a smile. Apparently they amused him.

“Are you going to hit me?”

“I don’t know,” I answered honestly. “It depends on if you take your pants off again.”

“You’ll hit me if I take my pants off?”

“Yeah… I might give you a junk-punch.”

He laughed, very loudly and very suddenly, and with the complete abandon that comes from being surprised. But his laugh was a radioactive seduction and had a half-life of infinity. I wanted him to stop laughing never. It made his eyes crinkle and his mouth curve in a sinful smile, showcasing his excellent dental hygiene regimen.

He also looked so different. He usually wore an expression of perpetual unimpressed boredom. Perpetual unimpressed boredom was a good look for him, a very good look. As were all the other expressions I’d seen, like distrust, mischievous amusement, thunderous anger, unveiled interest, etc.

But laughter… he almost looked happy. Happiness on Martin was a revelation of beauty and physical perfection married to excellent and infectious good-mood-vibes. I let my fists drop. Less than a minute into our first interaction on this trip and my carefully constructed defenses had been virtually blown to bits.

I might as well wave the white panties of surrender.

“Oh, well. Barnacles.” I said to nothing and no one.

His laugh gradually receded and his eyes flickered over me. “No more fists.”

“Nope. There’s no use,” I’m sure I sounded despondent.

“So you think I could take you in a fist fight?”

“I think you could take me whenever…” I shrugged. “If you wanted to, and I really only have myself to blame.”

Martin narrowed his eyes, and they sharpened, surveying me. “You don’t look happy about this.”

“I’m not.”

“Why not?”

I stared at him for a beat then freely admitted the truth. “Here is the problem Martin. I feel like I like you.”
The sharpness in his gaze softened and his mouth curved into a lazy, satisfied smile. “That doesn’t sound like a problem to me.”

“But it is,” I pressed. “Because the feeling originates entirely in my pants.

Review

My first ever Penny Reid read, yup! How about that! I have her other books on my TBR shelf, loaded in my gadget and all, and how this is my first read of her work, not really sure why. And what an interesting delightful treat!

This totally spoke to the nerd girl in me. I loved chemistry when I was in school to a point that I actually thought I’d be a chemist but that was just a chapter in my past life:D So we have the nerdy-and-unaware-how-pretty-she-is upper-class girl and the jock-but-has-more-there-than-meets-the-eye billionaire-stratosphere boy, and this is the beginning of their story.

Kaitlyn is adorable. In a way, she has no filter and just comes out honest and sincere. And funny! At times, her thoughts did tire me out a bit, with her naiveté and slight insecurities, so I just try to remember what it was like to be at that age and when I do that, I suppose it totally makes sense. And I say a girl who loves Lord of the Rings can never be that bad, no? hehe

Martin, now that boy is just pure alpha! Yes, to use Kaitlyn’s words, he can be jerky face, but oh boy, you can see he has this sweet side, and talk about swoon!:p These college boys, I tell ya! I don’t think I would have graduated if the boys were this hot when I was in school, ‘cause I would’ve just been too distracted. Is it just me? Hah!

It’s full of humor and all kinds of hotness. It’s got clever repartee. And yes, it’s got a cliffhanger! A doozy of a cliffhanger, just because the way Penny laid it out, I was just totally engrossed with the story that to end it like that almost felt cruel. Thank god there’s a glimpse of book 2, so then I was able to breathe a little better…

I think Penny may have just gotten a new fan. I think her writing and I will get along just fine:)
