What do you do when the one you least expect to matter… Ends up mattering the most? Derek Pearson likes to think he’s an easygoing guy. Uncomplicated, upfront, and unapologetic with what he wants. His what you see is what you get attitude is on prominent display for anyone who cares to look, and his foul mouth is right there to back it up should you miss the point. However, what you see isn’t always what you get, and only a select few have ever glimpsed the real man under the brash exterior. Among them? Professor Jordan Devaney. Complicated, high-maintenance, and vibrant, he’s Derek’s opposite in every way. From the moment they saw each other, a love-hate relationship began. But what happens when one person wants more?

THE CALL
Present Day

DEREK PEARSON PUSHED open the door of Leighton, Finley & Associates, and stepped out on the paved sidewalk. It was the first day of August, and if the sweltering Floridian sun was any indication, today was going to be hotter than hell’s waiting room. As he strolled toward the curb, he pulled a pack of Marlboros from the pocket of his shorts and flipped open the top. He needed a f*cking cigarette after watching Daniel Finley and his damn professor get all sappy and shit. That was gonna get old real quick if he had to stomach their nauseating displays of I love yous longer than the fifteen minutes he’d been in there. But he’d known he had to make an appearance sooner or later; otherwise Danny boy would’ve shown up asking questions. Questions he wasn’t ready to answer. There’d been a reason he hadn’t come around to see Finn when he first moved back from Chicago two months ago, but it wasn’t something he was in the mood to talk about yet, even if he was one of the two people on the planet who would get all the shit he’d been dealing with. Yeah… He just wasn’t ready to go there. With a smoke between his lips, he lit up, then shoved the pack back in his shorts. He was so damn antsy lately, and for that he could thank his brother, Alan. He walked around to the side of his Jeep and pulled open the door. After climbing inside, he grabbed his cell phone and stared at the dark screen, contemplating his next move. Am I really planning to do this? F*ck, it seemed that he was, even when he knew better. If he did this, it would be nothing more than a Band-Aid over the real problem. A shot to numb the more painful issues he was dealing with right now. He would be slipping back into a pattern he had pulled himself out of. An addiction he’d broken free from. But he was also aware that if he didn’t do it, the alternative would be to spiral out of control, and solitude was no longer helping his f*cked-up nerves. He brought the phone to his ear and waited. The phone rang and rang, and f*cking rang, until he was close to hanging up—and then it connected. “You free?” were the only two words out of his mouth. He waited, not caring to pursue small talk. That wasn’t what this was about. All he cared about in that moment was getting what he needed. When an affirmative came through the phone, he hung up, tossed it on the dashboard, and brought the Jeep to life. As he sped across town, he white-knuckled the steering wheel and didn’t allow himself to think about the consequences of what he was about to do. It took him less than ten minutes to pull into the underground parking garage of The Palisades and take the elevator up to where his drug of choice waited for him. He glanced up into the camera in the corner of his metallic confines and stared boldly into the face of the one who was waiting at the other end of this ride. Yeah, he was about to fall off the f*cking wagon big time. Was about to slide back into the one place he promised himself he wouldn’t go again. Yet as the elevator came to a halt and the doors opened, there was no denying this was exactly what he wanted. “I have thirty minutes,” were the words that greeted him. Derek walked off the elevator and over to the naked man waiting for him. He took the haughty chin between his thumb and forefinger and promised in a voice thick with arousal, “I only need ten. Take me to your room, Jordan. Time’s a wasting.”

REVIEW

RATING:

This is the 2nd book in the series and is a complete standalone, if you know what I mean. However, because I’m an Ella fan and have read the 1st book as well, I don’t think I can help it if I make some references to the first one, not that I’d give away anything.

Derek and Jordan… this is their history in the making. It ran concurrently with that of Finn and Brantley’s. It’s a slow burn of a read that spanned more than a decade. Was that was I expecting? I’m not sure. Yes and no? All I knew is that I had to trust Ella with where she wants to take me.

Derek and Jordan met pretty much around the same time as Finn and Brantley. When I first met Derek, he was this literally this hunk of a man, thanks to his size, a bit gruff on the outside, complete with the bad boy image. When I first met Jordan, he came across as this self-indulgent brat who’s all sass but endearing nonetheless. When I’ve had glimpses of their less than congenial run-ins, I wondered where all the animosity was coming from.

Here I find out why, and much more, of course.

Derek surprised me quite frankly with his back story. It was more dark and painful than I anticipated. Everything he did, he did to make a better future for himself, away from his family. He carried more weight on his shoulders, more than I anticipated and it broke my heart. He wasn’t one to share his worries, but somehow, Jordan felt the right person to share it with.

Jordan led an easy life and that’s just his reality. It didn’t mean that he felt that the world should revolve around him. He did his best to be a productive member of society. And when Derek crossed his path, something about Derek just called to him.

They’re worlds apart in upbringing, in their personality, in their social standing, but none of that mattered. At the end of it all, what mattered is how they felt about each other and how right they are for each other. Along the way, it wasn’t an easy path. No smooth sailing for these 2 up until the end. It was frustrating on the one hand, these 2 never seeming to be on the same page, mentally or emotionally, whether by circumstance or choice. But on the other hand, I suppose it was understandable, experiencing what they went thru. After all, sh!t just happens sometimes. People lose touch sometimes… People reconnect, but sometimes, things still happen… People have to grow, people have to do what’s needed to be done, people have other priorities sometimes, and other times, people are not ready to acknowledge certain things. Like I said, sh!t happens.

The tension brought on by their undeniable attraction, the push-pull, the doubts… the angst, oh the angst… sigh… But then there’s the heat, oh boy the heat!

So what am I really saying? Expect a slow burn, for starter. And as you read thru, know that you might be frustrated at times, but if you just get lost in the story, allow Derek and Jordan’s story to unfold, you’ll get one heck of an emotional ride with a sweet ending. I think so, anyway. Or at least, I did.

Last but not least, I just want to say I LOVE the cover and the models. For a change, I didn’t need to look any further for inspiration for the MC’s as Ella has done that homework for me already:D And I’m hoping that this series will continue, perhaps with Dylan next?… is he next, Ella? Pls say yes:D

It's time to come home, Finn. It’s been seven years since Daniel Finley left his hometown in Florida for the hustle and bustle of Chicago’s city life. Since then, he’s worked hard for his position at the prestigious law firm Leighton & Associates, even when it’s caused distance and isolation from his family and friends. But that’s all about to change. On his thirtieth birthday, he receives the one thing he never dared hope for. Something that was promised to him years earlier—a note. One simple sentence from the man he’s never been able to forget. Six words will forever change the course of their lives. Brantley Hayes has it all. Or so he thinks. When he first made the decision to take a job down in Florida, his family thought he was crazy. But, after years of living in the quiet beach town, he finally feels a sense of community. He’s surrounded himself with friends who are like family, has a job he loves, and owns a spectacular beachfront property that is his sanctuary. Yet he still feels unfulfilled, as if a piece of the puzzle is missing, and he knows exactly which piece it is. On an impulse, he follows through with a promise he made years earlier. A promise to call home the one he sent away. Nothing is as simple as it seems. After years of separation, the former lovers are reunited, but Brantley wasn’t expecting to encounter the high walls now guarding Daniel’s heart. Daniel may not be the same person he was when he left, but he knows that the first step to healing is the note in his hand.

REVIEW: Status Update (#gaymers, Book 1) by Annabeth Albert

I realized I haven't posted this here on the blog even though I have reviewed this on Goodreads and Amazon. With Beta Test around the corner, another 5-napkin read btw and review coming soon as well, what better time than to post this, right?

Adrian Gottlieb is winning at life. He's a successful video game designer with everything a man could ask for, including a warm comfy ride to Denver and a date for his sister's wedding. But he finds himself in need of a total reboot when he's left stranded at a snowy campground in Utah. Holiday plans? Epic fail.

That is until Noah Walters offers him shelter for the night and a reluctant cross-country ride. Nothing about the ultraconservative geoarchaeologist should attract Adrian, but once he discovers Noah's hidden love for video games, the two connect on a new level. Soon, a quiet but undeniable chemistry sparks.

Something doesn't add up, though. As the miles accumulate and time runs out, Noah must face the most difficult choice of his life. Meanwhile, Adrian must decide whether he's ready to level up. Is their relationship status worth fighting for, or has this game ended before it's even begun?

Review

(As posted on GR)

This is a first Annabeth read for me and definitely won’t be the last.

This is such a sweet story that just felt authentic to the core.

Noah and Adrian met by happenstance, and from that, and in a short amount of time to boot, something developed, from their easy camaraderie to a deeper understanding of each other.

In as much as nothing stands out here per se nor an extreme high or low in the story arc, I really enjoyed everything about it. With Noah and his conundrum, did it feel realistic, considering his age? I suppose? But in the end, what I took away was how real his emotions were. And Adrian, I love his easy-going spirit without minimizing his experiences. And there is such consideration for each other. It didn’t mean that it was all sunshine and rainbow for them throughout the book but regardless of their inner conflicts, especially on Noah’s part, I believed the effort each one took for each other. Yes, Noah almost lost me for a bit and in my head, only a grand gesture can fix that because Adrian definitely deserved more, and I felt he delivered.

I’m telling ya, this just makes me gooey inside. And considering their work backgrounds, it just totally spoke to the geek in me. What more can I ask for, right?

Off to look at Annabeth’s other books, wheee!!!

EXCERPT REVEAL: All the Rage by TM Frazier

all the rage excerpt.jpg

Excerpt

ARE YOU READY TO RAGE?
“What you don’t seem to understand is all that matters right now is standing right f*cking here,” Nolan said, his voice thick and deep. His eyes were the darkest I’d ever seen them, glimmering with wicked intent. One side of his full lips curled upward in a devilish smirk. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I was consumed by him. Or at least, from the way he continued to f*ck me with his eyes, I knew I was about to be.
Nolan took a step forward and I took two back. Our little dance made him chuckle, the sound coming from deep within his throat. With just that little laugh my insides clenched so hard I gasped. Nolan’s smirk grew into a knowing smile. His eyes darted to the space between my legs where my shorts had ridden up, exposing every inch of my shaking thighs.
He licked his bottom lip, tracing it with the tip of his tongue. My inner battle raged on between wanting to run away from him, and wanting to run straight into him. Although, it wasn’t like it mattered which option won out in the end. The pier was narrow, and Nolan was blocking my only way out.
He reached down and unbuckled his belt, sliding it out through the loops. Folding it in half, he snapped the leather together. The sound an echoing crack through the damp night air.
Our dance continued as he took another step toward me and I again retreated. “Since you don’t seem to feel the same way, let me tell you what’s going to happen right now,” Nolan started.
...
That’s when I realized there would be no escaping this time.
From him.
From this.
From us.

Review

Well, well… where to start with this one…

Hmm… how about this is probably one of those books where I will have no rating because in all honesty, I don’t know how to… even after I’ve given it some more thoughts…

With what I’ve read of Jettie’s works, I know that I will get something I don’t expect. That, at least, is a given here. If I see it from that perspective, I suppose I could give it 5-stars. But the thing is, the whole time I was reading it, I seriously don’t know what to expect at every page turn and right to the end, and that is where my confusion starts.

Jaq and Oliver are 2 very fascinating characters, especially Jaq. She has so many issues; she’s hardly functioning, if that. Oliver has his own issues but it’s almost nothing compared to Jaq’s. Their paths crossed by accident and somehow Oliver felt a pull to her. And so he did everything within his power to be part of her world and find her healing.

With everything they have to deal with, it feels like there’s a lot happening and yet not. On the one hand, if there were more layers added to the story, I felt like it might have been too overpowering. On the other, I felt like I was overwhelmingly underwhelmed by the end... hmmm… I dunno… I really don’t know how I feel about this one…

So I guess I will just leave it at this – Jettie certainly knows how to play with your mind. Trust that she will give you something unexpected and completely left field of where you think you’re going. She doesn’t do boring. She doesn’t do conventional. You will be constantly asking questions. Whether you get the answers or not, whether it will leave you satisfied or not, whether things will make sense or not, that, that’ll entirely depend on you. Now whether I make sense here or not, I’m certain I don’t. O well…

REVIEW: Wicked Need (The Wicked Horse, Book 3) by Sawyer Bennett

RATING:

Blurb

Rand Bishop’s dreams of Olympic gold were shattered years ago but he’s left that all behind, settling into a new career and lifestyle that would make any man jealous. While he may not be competitively racing down the ski slopes anymore, he’s just as happy getting his rocks off as a Fantasy Maker for The Silo.

He’s good at what he does.
Damn good.

But while life couldn’t be better for Rand, it seems to be falling apart for Catherine Lyons Vaughn, the dark haired, brown-eyed beauty that has captivated an entire sex club.

Having spent years degrading herself on her husband’s whim and now left destitute after his death, Catherine has hit rock bottom. With nothing but her body to peddle, Catherine is merely trying to figure out how to survive in a harsh, cruel world. Lucky for her, Rand has taken her under his tattooed wing, and he’s determined to give her a safe life where she can be the woman she was always meant to be.

Now all Catherine has to do is believe she deserves the chance.

Review

This is the 3rd book in the series, Rand and Cat’s story.

Rand and Cat have been in the periphery in the first 2 books. Rand is one of the Fantasy Makers in The Silo. Cat was the woman who everyone knew in a biblical sense when she was brought in by her then alive husband to live out his fantasy.

Cat may be my fave h in the series so far. Despite what she's gone thru, there's gumption there. And she owned her sexuality without judgment, which is like almost a given, I suppose. Rand, just like the rest of the men of The Silo was just perfect. They do right by their women. Need I say more?

Cat's past was not easy to swallow but Rand understood all that. It may have felt that things moved really fast between them but keep in mind that that there was enough history there even before they became a couple thanks to The Silo. And seeing these involved the men of The Silo, it goes without saying that the heat is thru the roof!!! Sawyer, you dirty woman, you! I dug it! *g*

While I have no real complaints about this one, it did feel like everything just went down too smoothly, even including whatever conflict they had. Cat thought the right thought, did the right thing, and said the right words. And so did Rand. Could there be such a thing as too right? Or I wonder if it's my impatience for Bridger's story affecting it. Not to steal away Rand's thunder, but Bridger, I wanna hear his story!!! (Did you hear that, Sawyer?)

Logan's story is up next. He's just as "durh-tay" as Rand *winks* so it'll be interesting to see what floats his woman's boat out of his many skillz... teehee...

Excerpt
Henry
“How about you and one of your girls come out to my show in L.A. next week? My treat. Dinner, drinks, the whole deal. Evan and I would love to take you two beautiful ladies out for an evening.”
“Excuse me?” he exclaimed, cocking his head to catch my gaze.
I leaned back into my seat and lifted a hand to massage his shoulder. I was barely able to suppress a moan when the angle of his firm trap muscle met my palm.
Fuck, this guy was built like a brick wall. And I was going to love every second of watching him crumble for me.
“Oh, come on, Evan. It’s the least we can do. Double date.” I winked at Jessica. “You can fly them out! My plane should be ready by then.”
Jessica’s eyes jumped to Evan’s. “You’re a pilot?” Her smile spread irritatingly wide.
Back off, Ginger Spice.
Snapping my fingers in her direction, I corrected, “He’s my pilot.”
Subtlety was not a virtue I possessed. Was subtlety a virtue at all?
“Your temporary pilot,” he amended before shaking his head and then tipping his beer to his lips for a long pull.
“Anyway. Do we have a date?” And, by date, I meant feeding her dinner while I attempted to work my way into Evan’s pants.
She pressed one finger to her lips and then nervously flashed her eyes around the cabin.
“Oops. Sorry.” I shrugged sheepishly. Lifting my drink to my mouth, I discreetly passed her my cocktail napkin and then not-so-discreetly brushed my forearm against Evan’s chest as I pulled away.
He offered her a tight smile just before she disappeared.
I grinned proudly.
“What the f*cking hell was that?” he whisper-yelled at me.
“That was me getting a woman’s number.”
He arched an eyebrow. “A woman. Really?”
“What? Is that not allowed?” I feigned innocence.
He clenched his fist in his lap, and it made me suddenly aware that my own hands had stopped trembling—and in record time, I should note. Evan seemed to be quite useful in the art of distraction.
He leaned closer. “Don’t bullshit me. I looked you up. You’re…” He stopped, unwilling to say the big, bad “G” word.
“I’m what?” I taunted.
He rolled his eyes and chugged the rest of his beer.
We went back to silence until Jessica came back by with another drink, complete with her phone number written on the napkin.
“I’m not going on a double date,” Evan said as I tucked the napkin into my pocket. “You want me to fly them out? Not a problem. Schedule it with Jackson. But that’s the extent of my professional responsibilities. And, since I’m off the clock right now, I’d also like to mention that I think whatever play you’re planning to run on that woman is f*cked up.”
My head snapped to his. “I’m sorry. Play?” I asked with more attitude than I had originally planned.
“Yes. Play,” he sneered.
I stirred my drink. “Let me get this straight. I’m offering to fly her out in a private jet, feed her dinner at one of the best restaurants in the city, and put her front row at a concert that has been sold out for over a year. That doesn’t seem like a play to me. It sounds like I’m trying to do something nice for a woman I was rude to earlier.” I casually leaned back in my seat. “My conscience doesn’t ‘play’ when it comes to apologies.”
“Right. Well, maybe you should have a chat with your conscience, because she looks like she just won the date of a lifetime. Meanwhile, you don’t even like women.” He stalled, no doubt looking for just the right word to express his disgust without sounding like a bigot. Judging by his gentleness when we’d taken off, he wasn’t the type of guy to go for the fag bomb.
I watched him intently, excited to see how he was going to handle this.
“You’re gay.”
I frowned at his lack of creativity. “Not that it’s any of your damn business. But I’ll have you know I love women.”
It wasn’t a lie. I adored women. Especially Levee and Robin.
I just didn’t like pussy. Meh. Semantics.
He gaped. “You’re bi?”
“And I’ll repeat: None of your damn business. But yeah. Do you have a problem with that?”
Again, it wasn’t necessarily a lie.
Was I bisexual? F*ck no. My c*ck was in no way an equal opportunity employer.
I was somewhat bilingual though. I knew how to ask for a blow job in English and Spanish. I pretended that was what he meant.
Chupame la verga.

Review
RATING:

I may be all biased since I’m a huge Aly fan, but I cannot even begin to express how much I enjoyed this one. It’s her first foray into the world of m/m, and I’m just tickled pink about all of it…

I had a glimpse of Henry from the first book, The Fall Up. He’s Levee’s best friend. He’s out and out proud, and I really wanted to hear his story. He and Evan met when Henry’s usual pilot went out of commission, so to speak, so came in Evan.

Lemme just say that Henry cracked me up with his thoughts. Not to make fun of him, but even when he’s going thru his episodes while flying and he’s exasperating others, he’s hilarious in his freak-out. His thoughts and feelings for Evan are funny, emotional and endearing all at once.

Evan is just endearing even with his own doubts. He’s more serious than Henry but he’s not without his own sense of humor. I like how he gets Henry. I love that when he fell hard, he fell hard! And that grand gesture at the end, sigh…

Evan has his own issues. As comfortable as he is with his sexuality, it’s really unfortunate that the people around him were getting hung up on trying to figure him out and box him in categories unnecessarily, including Henry, although not for the same reasons as the other people. With all these outside opinions, I’d say that can mess up anyone. Henry himself has his own hang-ups which developed out of his unpleasant childhood…

VIA

Put them together, you know there’s gonna be angst. And this is Aly of course, so that’s like a given. And naturally, the heat, yes, there’s heat!!! Plus all the geeky references...

... I love it, just freakin’ love it!!!
