The front door opened. I expected a housekeeper or butler, but it was the actor himself.
I hadn’t forgotten how beautiful he was; I’d just chosen not to think about it.
“Ma’am,” he said. Southern boy. Parents together. Christian elementary. Public secondary. Two years at USC Drama. Dates his costars for a month after the wrap party, then moves on. Poring through the trades and making calls, I’d discovered he’d spend at least eight of the next twelve months overseas doing action movies, but most had postproduction in town.
“Mr. Sinclair,” I said, holding my hand out. “Nice to see you outside a bathroom.”
He shook my hand.
I’d shaken plenty of famous hands attached to gorgeous men, but my imagination was sparked by the way his fingers slid against mine to grasp them and the way our palms pressed together. My mind clouded over with ripped sheets, hard muscles, and soft skin.
“Pleasure’s mine,” he said and my brain skipped like a trip on a cracked sidewalk over the word pleasure.
He didn’t give me the oversincere hand-over-clasp to show me how damn happy he was to see me, but there was something intimate about that half a second.
Just a consultation.
I followed him into the house. Dora Donovan had designed it. Looked like her with her faux-midcentury white couch and shag rug. That wasn’t going to work with playdates unless he wanted to keep an upholsterer on staff.
We went through the living room to a smaller room with a pool table smack in the middle. It had a stained glass Budweiser lamp over it and was racked for nine-ball. Dora Donovan had nothing to do with this room, for sure.
“Wanna sit?” He held a chair out for me. The glass-topped table was just inside the open patio doors and was set with iced tea.
I sat.
“I’m not a date,” I said kindly, indicating the iced tea setup. “Just so you know. You don’t have to do things like hold the chair for me.”
“Habit, I guess.”
He sat opposite me.
“Chivalry is nice. But with the nanny, whomever you hire, it can be misconstrued.”
He smirked a little, as if misconstruing his own thoughts. I cleared my throat and pulled my jacket closed.

Every time I pick up a CD book, I almost always want to say how I miss her writing. In the first few words, a feeling seeps in that almost always makes want to say, "Ah, CD, there you are!" Don't ask me to explain more because I can't. HAH!
If you've read
Shuttergirl, you'd have met Brad briefly. I must say, I did not expect this side of Brad. The Brad I met, the party animal who didn't seem to give a care in the world and just irresponsible, was just that. And yes, I was curious.
Brad's life was upended suddenly with the appearance of a child, his child, and in a short time, he had to find someone to take care of her. So begins Brad and Cara's dance.
As the attraction grew between them, it's a weird dynamics they found themselves in, with Brad being such a big star. Slippery slope to cliché-dom. How do they then navigate their way around each other?
Brad has secrets. Cara has hang-ups. How do you move forward then from a fragile start without fracturing things some more?
Like I said, Brad surprised me in the most delish way. Past the party image is a Southern boy with Southern manners. Past the Hollywood image is just a man wanting to do right by the people he cared for. Past the easy going facade is a man with insecurities and secrets. And along the way I just fell in love with him the more he reveals his flaws. Somehow, it made him more layered, more human, more vulnerable, move lovable.
Cara has this head-on-her-shoulder attitude on the one hand, and yet, a susceptible one on the other. She has a strong sense of self. She knows her strength. She's not perfect, she knows it, and she's ok with it, and yah, I agree, that's ok. If you're familiar with CD's other books, I don't think you'll be disappointed with Cara. Just like her other h's, there's something that's almost intimidating and admirable all at once with the confidence she exude, even in moments of weakness.
As a couple, Brad and Cara's chemistry is not necessarily the explosive kind but the slow burn between them matched the pace of their story nicely. It makes sense. If I were impatient at times, it's all my doing. Past CD works would pop up in my head causing me to compare apples and oranges when I shouldn't.
Nevertheless, CD's writing is just as moving and lyrical as always. It's like the words are leaping out of the pages to form images right in front of you. And maybe it's just me, reading CD's books always prompts me to think of a musical score playing in the background. That's how vivid she paints things for me thru her words.
And last but not least, it would be very remiss of me if I don't mention the little bombshell herself. She has got to be one of the most adorable kids I've come across in my fiction reads. I'd say she's just as much a star as her daddy.
"Zip it, lock it, put it in your pocket..."

CD Reiss is a
New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn't pick up she's at the well hauling buckets.
Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master's degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.
She's frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn't ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.
