Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Bullshit.
Words destroyed me.
“I’m sorry. She didn’t make it.”
“Daddy, he can’t breathe!”
“There’s nothing more we can do for your son.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Lies.
Those syllables and letters became my executioner. I told myself that, if I didn’t acknowledge the pain and the fear, they would have no power over me. But, as the years passed, the hate and the anger left behind began to control me.
Two words—that was all it took to plunge my life into darkness.
“He’s gone.”
In the end, it was four soft, silky words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Charlotte Mills.”

RATING:

This was emotionally draining, let me just say now, and I wouldn't trade that feeling at all. It occurred to me after finishing this duet that from the get-go, the emotional roller coaster this duet took me on had its residual effect long after I finish the pages. As I took breaks from the pages and went on with my RL, I've had days when I felt off. Now that I'm writing this review, I can tell you that when I think of those days, I can tell you without a doubt that it was because I just went through an emotionally draining event in the book. How crazy is that?!?!

This conclusion to this beautiful duet had me on edge one moment, livid one moment, sad one moment, angry one moment, tearful one moment, happy one moment, then back to on edge again, and so begins the cycle, quite a few times.

In fact I was so on edge, I couldn't even trust that Charlotte, the h, would make the right decisions, even though she didn't really give me a reason not to. And this is all because of how enamored I am with Porter and the Reese family, but most definitely with Porter.

However the inspiration came to Aly to conjure up Porter, I will send my own vibes now to Aly that she continues to draw from it/him/them/whatever. Porter has now taken the top spot on my BBF list, I kid you not! I seriously have no words as to how much I love Porter!!! adljreirafnvafngadfg!!!!

Notwithstanding my neurotic reactions to this book, the story is well-crafted and well-paced. Putting my misgivings aside regarding Charlotte, this was her moment to shine. For all the things she's been through, she didn't lose sight of what truly matters. Seeing Charlotte and Porter take on things together, they really were stronger as a couple. And the Reese family will just melt your heart.

And quite frankly, I think Aly just gave one of the best, if not THE best, proposals ever!!! I seriously have no words as to how much I love Porter!!! qanmfaoeijgfglklaerjag!!! (I already said it earlier, I know)

RELEASE DAY: Chasing Destiny by Megan Erickson

Chasing Destiny
Silver Tip Pack, #2
by Megan Erickson

Blurb

Some live on memories…

Almost dying during a pack uprising has a way of shaking things up. I’m no longer Mr. Laid Back now that there’s an itch under my skin I can’t scratch.

On a volunteer mission that goes beyond the walls of our compound, we enter the territory of a pack long thought dead, and find ourselves on the business end of their spears.

What I’m not prepared for is what I find within their walls—The one shifter I never thought I’d see alive, the one I’d mourned twice, the one I’d always loved. He is alive, and if I have anything to do with it, he’ll stay that way. But he’s got secrets, and exposing them could lead us to an enemy worse than the bloodthirsty undead shifters wanting to kill us all…

Excerpt

Megan Erickson ©

I’d never really been good at following the rules. That was Dare’s job. If something was supposed to be off-limits, then I wanted it that much more. Of course, that got me into all kinds of sh!t that Dare bailed me out of, but you only live once, right?
I had one window in my room, which was boarded and locked. I picked the lock with a sharp claw and eased open the boards in time to see Pace walking across the grounds four stories below, a bundle in his arms. A quick sniff told me it was food. I watched him, eager to see where he was going, but he disappeared around the corner of the building. “F*ck,” I muttered, glancing around my room, then out the window again.
A small stone ledge, maybe a foot wide, was visible below, and it seemed to go around the building. I hated heights—f*cking hated them—but face your fears and all of that. With a deep breath, I sat on the window frame, my legs dangling outside. The ledge was far enough that I’d have to drop to reach it. This could go well or very, very badly—I’d either land on it or plummet to the hard dirt.
I inhaled and exhaled slowly, kicking my legs a bit, feeling the breeze on my face. I could do this. I wanted to know what Pace was hiding. With a lick across my dry lips, I counted off. “One, two, three.” I turned my body so I was facing the wall, and, with my hands on the ledge, slid down slowly until the edges of my boots touched the ledge. Next step—letting go of the windowsill. I released one hand, placing the ball of one foot on the ledge. I braced myself and dropped my other hand.
The world tilted as I nearly lost my balance and scrabbled at the stone, looking for a handhold that wasn’t there. With a yelp, I plastered myself to the wall, taking deep breaths until I was sure I wasn’t going to fall. Dare would have been able to leap down no problem, the alpha bastard. But I wasn’t quite that strong or agile.
I took a minute to get my breath, because I’d wasted enough time already, then I began to shuffle along the ledge. The sun had dropped, and I was grateful my room was on the building’s darkened east side. The last thing I needed was some nosy werewolf raising the alarm that I’d escaped.
When I eased around the corner, I spotted Pace right away. He was exiting a small hut that lay secluded along the back wall near the farms. Every other home-like structure in the compound had open windows, but this one was all boarded up. Something was in there. Something alive that he was feeding. What if they were hiding a Nowere? Some packs kept Noweres to study. And if one was in there, I wasn’t staying here another minute. F*ck this pack, I wasn’t about to be Nowere bait.
I had to see what was in that hut. I didn’t care if I got caught, either. What were these werewolves going to do to me? Kick me out? Fine, then.
Pace didn’t notice me, passing below at a fast clip. Once he was out of sight, I gauged the best way to get down. My gaze landed on a drain spout, brackets holding it to the building’s side. I eased over to it, and then, quick as I could, I shimmied down the spout, cringing when my weight threatened to rip it from the building. When I was about fifteen feet from the ground, I jumped down the rest of the way, landing as softly as I could.
In a crouch, I ran to the front door of the hut. It was locked, something barring entry from inside, so I found a window along the side with a loose board. Prying off the nails, I managed to create a space large enough for me to peek through. I wasn’t barging in there to get bitten by some pet Nowere.
Nothing was moving inside—all I saw was a dirt floor—and I pulled the wood back more to get a better view. Toward the back of the space, an oil lamp illuminated the foot of a bed with two feet hanging over the edge.
They weren’t moving.

COVER REVEAL: Drunk Dial by Penelope Ward

We are excited to bring you the upcoming standalone from New York Times, USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling author Penelope Ward.

DRUNK DIAL will release on AUGUST 21!

Cover designer: Letitia Hasser, RBA designs
Cover Model: Vadim Ivanov
Cover Photography: Kevin Roldan

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new, sexy standalone novel.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Look up Landon Roderick, that boy from childhood whom I’d never been able to forget—even though he so easily forgot about me—and call him. Then again, anything sounds like a good idea when you’ve had a little too much wine before bed, right? It was supposed to be just a quick, meaningless, prank call. Instead, I went off on him—unloading thirteen years of pent-up emotions. I didn’t think he’d call me back. I certainly could never have anticipated the weeks of sexually tense phone conversations that followed as I got to know the man he’d become. Turned out, Landon had never really forgotten me, either. That special connection we had was still there. I opened up to him, but there were also things about me he didn’t know. And he had his own secrets. Over the countless hours we talked on the phone, I wondered what would happen if we actually saw each other. One night, I did something impulsive again. Only this time, I went to the airport and booked a ticket to California. We were about to find out if one phone call could bring two lost souls together or if my drunk dial really was all just a big mistake.

 A complete STANDALONE.

REVIEW BLITZ: Beautiful Mistake by Vi Keeland

The first time I met Caine West was in a bar. He noticed me looking his way and mistakenly read my scowling as checking him out. When he attempted to talk to me, I set him straight—telling him what I thought of his lying, cheating, egomaniacal ass. You see, the gorgeous jerk had wined and dined my best friend--smooth talking her into his bed, all along failing to mention that he was married. He deserved every bit of my tongue-lashing and more for what he'd done. Especially when that lazy smile graced his perfect face in response to my rant. Only it turned out, the man I'd just told off wasn't the right guy. Oops. My mistake. Embarrassed, I slunk out without an apology. I was never going to see the handsome stranger again anyway, right? That’s what I thought…until I walked into class the next morning. Well, hello Professor West, I’m your new teaching assistant. I’ll be working under you…figuratively speaking. Although the literal interpretation might not be such a bad thing—working under Professor West. This was going to be interesting…

RATING:

Don’t know how it happens but every time I pick up a Vi book, I always get lulled into thinking that it will be rom-com when her books are normally not. Yes, there’s humor, but as you dive into it some more, you’ll get the feels, that’s for sure. This book is no exception, for sure.

In true Vi fashion, first the yummy cover, ✔. Second, the blurb, ✔. Third, the meet-cute that’s always a hoot, ✔. Fourth, like I said, the feels, ✔. And of course, the sexual tension and the heat, ✔✔✔. 😏

A spin on the teacher-student trope, Caine is the professor and Rachel is the TA; so not quite forbidden but still iffy due to the idea of fraternization. It’s all about the attraction. As the relationship builds, you then realize that they’re more tethered to each other than they both know. The present then becomes full of secrets. Hmmm…

Rachel is one h one can easily relate to. I’d say she’s a strong woman. She didn’t let her scarred past shape the kind of person she is at present. She’s learned to move on. She’s got a good head on her shoulder.

I wasn’t sure if I want to hug Caine or slap him so he smartens up. But in the end, I lurve him! His past was full of what ifs, so many regrets. None of them were on him, but he made it so. I thought that was a smart move to display the past in Caine’s POV as it was nice to see what shaped the present Caine. And present Caine is one sexy dirty-talkin’ dude! *g*

There’s a sweet sadness to the story but it was nicely balanced with humor. An unsettled Caine was adorable to read. And the connection between them was tangible. Whatever Vi put these characters thru, you’ll find that even when they (by they, I mean mostly Caine LOL) make stupid decisions, she will redeem them as well in your eyes so that at the end of the day you’ll love them regardless, and then comes sweet forgiveness.

So if you’re familiar with Vi’s work, you definitely won’t be disappointed with this. You get a well-developed story and characters with a lot of heart, and heat. And if you’re not, I’d say this is a good starting place as any to get familiar with her work. Wachoo waiting for, huh?!

Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience. “You’re pregnant.” “It’s a boy.” “Your son needs a heart transplant.” Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me. Lies. Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun. Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky. “He’s gone.” For ten years, the darkness consumed me. In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise. “Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

Review:

RATING:

Aly, Aly, Aly, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways…

I love thee for the emotional ride you take me.
I love thee for the unique story lines you give me.
I love thee for the heroes I can fall in love with.
I love thee for the heroines who will do any woman proud.
I love thee for the beautiful prose you sprinkle on the pages.
Oh how I love thee…

Quite frankly, every time this book pops up in my head, I swear I get into this semi-trance when I think of the emotions that this book evoked out of me. Most importantly, my mind zooms in on Porter. Porter is… just… perfect!!!

Charlotte is still reeling from a past that just completely broke her. She’s a shell of her old self. When Porter enters her life, something turns around in her head. Porter himself has his own demons to fight and facing an uphill battle. When Charlotte enters his life, something changes in his head. Regardless of Charlotte’s reservations, Porter manages to slowly crack thru her barriers. With Porter’s charm, wit and overall character, Charlotte doesn’t stand a chance. How can she?!

While I’m not a mother myself, Charlotte’s experience feels real enough; which brings me to my next point. Be careful of the emotional triggers that abound in this book. Myself, I have to take some breaks every now and then because if I didn’t, I felt like this book will swallow me whole. Her pain was palpable and the despair all felt too real. But it was also very encouraging to see how she slowly challenged herself to move forward, albeit in a turtle pace.

Porter cannot be any more perfect in my mind. I don’t care what anyone tells me or what I read out there. I’m claiming him!!! Porter is MINE!!! 😁 I’m truly at a loss for words to describe how much I love his character. 😍😍😍

These 2 coming together is poignant to see. Mix in the humor and it feels more bittersweet. There is so much anguish yet so much hope… so much love…

It will hook you in right from the start. The angst will punch you in the gut immediately. Charlotte’s pain might break you. Porter will sweep you off your feet instantly. Tears will flow but there’ll be plenty of smiles as well. You may or may not see the ending coming, but I think that’s irrelevant. The ending will have your eyes bug out. And all you’d want to do is grab for the 2nd book, The Brightest Sunset.

For me, without a doubt, one of Aly’s best, and if you’re familiar with Aly’s works like I am, I think you’ll agree as well. If you’re not, all I’m saying is that every one of her book is top-notch so for me to say this is one of her best, well… need I say more? 😊 Seriously, I will give this more than 5 stars if I can!

Whatever fuels Aly, I hope it never stops. Every story and every character are fresh. Her writing is beautiful. She makes even the most inconsequential thing consequential because it perfectly captures moments. I for one, know that I’ll keep coming back to her.

And now, on to book 2!
