REVIEW: Brown-Eyed Girl (Travis Family, Book 4) by Lisa Kleypas

RATING:

Blurb
Wedding planner Avery Crosslin may be a rising star in Houston society, but she doesn't believe in love-at least not for herself. When she meets wealthy bachelor Joe Travis and mistakes him for a wedding photographer, she has no intention of letting him sweep her off her feet. But Joe is a man who goes after what he wants, and Avery can't resist the temptation of a sexy southern charmer and a hot summer evening.
After a one night stand, however, Avery is determined to keep it from happening again. A man like Joe can only mean trouble for a woman like her, and she can't afford distractions. She's been hired to plan the wedding of the year-a make-or-break event.
But complications start piling up fast, putting the wedding in jeopardy, especially when shocking secrets of the bride come to light. And as Joe makes it clear that he's not going to give up easily, Avery is forced to confront the insecurities and beliefs that stem from a past she would do anything to forget.
The situation reaches a breaking point, and Avery faces the toughest choice of her life. Only by putting her career on the line and risking everything-including her well-guarded heart-will she find out what matters most.

Review

This is a first Lisa Kleypas read for me. I know, go figure! I've read other romance writers citing her as a fave and even inspiration that led them to that genre. I can now see why. While this won't be an all-time fave, this was a nice easy read.

Pls keep in mind that I tend to gravitate towards heavier, steamier, angst-ier stories in my romance reads. Having said that, I can appreciate "simpler, traditional" romance every now and then.

This is the 4th book in the series, I haven't read the first 3 and I didn't feel lost as each book focus on a Travis family member. Here we have Joe Travis and his woman, Avery.

Avery is not necessarily a h I tend to favor. As much as I understood her insecurities, I expected more courage from her. Luckily, she wasn't abrasive and she had enough qualities to redeem her. She's a good friend/sister.

Joe, now Joe is the stuff good romance heroes are made of. From a good solid family background, he has a good head on his shoulder. He knows when to take charge and when to pull back. He's sweet, but not overly sweet. He's secure with his emotions. And he's funny! He doesn't take himself too seriously. Melike!

The story moved along nicely, with a natural flow to it. It felt a tad formulaic but it's not predictable. No unneccessary angst but just realistic honest emotions. With this alone, I'm sold on Ms. Kleypas' heroes. Her heroines? Umm, not sure yet...

I think if you're a fan, it's good enough. If you're like me, I'd say not bad at all.

Talk about an EPIC conclusion to Antonio and Theresa’ tale!!!!!!

And one EPIC book hangover!!!!!!

CD has done it again and left me all discombobulated and speechless…

I’m telling ya, this blank screen was blank for a while as I needed to collect my thoughts and re-arrange my emotions to be able to write a coherent review on this…

You can’t read this obviously unless you’ve read the first 2 books in the series. It picks up right where the 2nd book ended and is it ever a roller coaster ride from beginning to end!!!

Theresa and Antonio have decisions to make. By coming back to the place they left, it's about being ready for the consequences, no matter what that may be. They have different opinions on how to handle certain things. Antonio bent on protecting Theresa regardless of what happened to him. Theresa bent on keeping Antonio safe regardless of what happened to her. Neither choice is satisfactory to each other and neither one is willing to bend. Yet they understand.

Antonio must do what he feels he must do to allow them a future. Things got a little more complicated when a part of his past was brought to the present. Theresa has always been secure with her feelings and how Antonio feels about her but Antonio's past has an impact to her future. Meanwhile, the power balance of the mob scene has to correct itself according to the big players of the house. Whether Antonio and Theresa like it or not, something has to happen. All leading to one highly charged, explosive, heartrending conclusion...

Theresa was truly one heck of a heroine. Yes, I questioned her reticence at times, but ultimately, I understood its source. Her convictions are undeniable, and her actions reflect that. Her love for Antonio clearly propelled her to do the things she did but it didn't subjugate her to his needs. That I think shows true strength. Only a confident woman who's comfortable with her weaknesses and aware of her worth can have the thoughts she did.

Antonio was truly one heck of a partner and a lover. Passion oozes off him, whether directed to the people who wronged him or to the woman whose essence permeated him to the core. He's ruthless but he cares. There is such old worldliness to him yet he's caught up with the times. He took charge yet he relented to her. He clearly put Theresa on a category of her own. He didn't patronize her nor underestimated her love for him... He loved wholeheartedly... Honestly, I cannot be any more enamored with him!!!

It's been a while since I've felt my heart caught at my throat, anxiously anticipating the sequence of events. I was giddy with excitement seeing much loved characters from this supremely layered and fascinating Drazen family. I was gutted by the end, bawling my eyes out, and arriving at the end, I was melancholic and ecstatic all at once. I couldn't have thought of a more fitting ending to the love story that is of Antonio and Theresa... sigh...

CD definitely knows how to weave a tale. Her words are just dramatic, there's no other way to put it. It's impactful. It's awe-inspiring. It's breathtaking.
"Some things are in the stars. I was meant to protect you. And you were meant to rule."
Thank you once again, Christine, for your gift of words.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

CD Reiss is a USA Today and Amazon bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up, she’s at the well, hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere, but it did embed TV story structure in her head well enough for her to take a big risk on a TV series structured erotic series called Songs of Submission. It’s about a kinky billionaire hung up on his ex-wife, an ingenue singer with a wisecracking mouth; art, music and sin in the city of Los Angeles.
Critics have dubbed the books “poetic,” “literary,” and “hauntingly atmospheric,” which is flattering enough for her to put it in a bio, but embarrassing enough for her not to tell her husband, or he might think she’s some sort of braggart who’s too good to give the toilets a once-over every couple of weeks or chop a cord of wood.
If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Blurb
From the New York Times bestselling author of Stepbrother Dearest, comes a new forbidden STANDALONE romance.
What happens when the one you want is the only one you can’t have?
My name is Sevin.
Homeschooled and sheltered by my ultra-religious family, I was always taught that lust was a sin.
Elle was the girl who’d been carefully chosen for me.
After a long-distance courtship, I’d be moving into her family’s guesthouse so that we could get to know each other in the months before the wedding.
Boundaries were set: no inappropriate touching, no kissing, no sex before marriage.
I’d accepted those rules and my fate.
Until I met the one I wanted to sin with.
That was when restraint became a problem…especially since the one wasn’t Elle.
It was her sister, Evangeline.
You know what they say about best laid plans.
My name is Sevin, and I have sinned.

Told in alternating points of view, Sins of Sevin is a full-length standalone novel. Contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. Only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.
