Review
RATING:
This is probably gonna be a strange review, just so you know. Just in case, it’s not my intention for it to have a backhanded feel to it, not at all! So I hope I’ve written enough to make it not sound so:o
Interestingly enough, this is the 2nd book I’ve read in the last couple of months where the h has the same condition, and this is the 2nd book I’ve read with the h having the same name. How about that! I have some of Pepper’s books on my kindle locked and loaded but somehow haven’t gotten to them yet. A lot of friends on Goodreads love her. As to why this is my first Pepper read, I do not know.
And now that I’ve read this, let me just immediately point out that I love her writing! There’re only a handful of writers that can get me to highlight so many passages from his/her book as much as Pepper can.
Now with the book itself… if you’re a fan of MC romance, this can work. If you want MC romance that's not too dark, has suspense and more angst, this can work. If you want a different angle on the h, this one has amnesia, this can work. If you’re a fan of smexy times, this can work. If you’re a fan of back-and-forth timelines that reveals things both in the past and the present concurrently, this can work. And if you’re a fan of H’s who are on the a$$hole side, bordering on d0uche category, then yes, I think this can work.
Personally, where I struggled a bit are the characters. Several times, I questioned their decisions and actions. But pls keep in mind, that’s probably just me projecting on them. I didn’t understand how “secure” she felt around him based on her instincts alone. That’s quite a leap of faith! I didn’t understand at times why the h didn’t share some things that I felt were important to share. I didn’t understand her over-sexualized youth version. I didn’t understand how the H could’ve treated the h during certain scenes. Ruined or not, that is NEVER ok! I didn’t understand his reticence when crucial things were revealed. I know, I know, there’s more to come, but still… Now that I think more about it, having to give up his youth really fast because of his circumstances, it feels that at the same time that his maturity level was stunted.
Then, there were plot holes that my mind was trying to fill, but I’m thinking as more things are revealed in the 2nd book, that those things will be resolved (I hope). There’re a lot of things happening to make sense of their past and present. Just figuring out the game, let alone the right players, it’s making my mind work on overdrive.
Having said all that, I am quite enamored with the idea that there is something bigger than them that just tethers them to each other, that there is that connection that goes beyond lust. And, like I mentioned earlier, I can’t get over how much I enjoy her writing. I found it’s quite moving, and just really rhythmical. That alone tells me that her other books are situated just right on my kindle to get thru.
In my mind, if her characters were in the hands of a less prolific author, it probably would have only been a 2-napkin read for me, but in her hands, I feel it warrants enough to be a 3.5-, ok, 4-napkin read.
And oh boy…that ending!!! I just hope I can still remember the story by the time the 2nd book comes out. Yes, it does appear that I want to continue with this story after all…
