REVIEW: Money Shot (Selected Sinners MC, Book 6) by Scott Hildreth

RATING:

Blurb
“Vince” is a member of the Selected Sinners MC, an enforcer, and an administrator of justice. He is the real-life book boyfriend most women dream of. Handsome, tattooed, covered in muscles, and very alpha, he appears to be a dream come true. One thing most of his MC brothers do not realize about him is that he spends his nights reading romance novels, and has since he was a kid. He lives by a set of moral standards most men wouldn’t even dream of attempting, and enjoys Sunday dinners with his mother and her dog.

Sienna Boyco is a book reviewer who enjoys music, wine, and reviewing books; primarily MC Romance novels. She has dreamt of one day being swept off her feet by the men she reads about in her books. One night, after two bottles of wine and two book reviews, her doorbell rings.

And on her front porch stands a stranded biker.

A trip to the gas station leads to a talk about books, and a friendship develops.

But after divorcing his wife of 15 years for cheating, Vince has very little trust in women and no interest in a relationship.

Sienna, on the other hand, will take what she can get and hope in time things will change.

Is it possible for a book reviewer with no history of criminal activity or violence to actually fall in love with a real life biker?

Sienna intends to find out.

Money Shot is a stand alone erotic romance with an HEA. There is no cheating, no sex outside the relationship, and there are no club whores. No other book is required to tell this tale, and the novel may be enjoyed as a stand alone. To fully understand the intricacies of all of the ancillary characters, the series should be read as a whole. Money Shot is Book VI in the Selected Sinners Series of MC Romance novels. Please be over 18 to enjoy this story, as it contains violence, sex, and more sex.

Review

To start with, this was generously gifted by Scott himself. He stated it's a good introduction to his writing… It’s the 6th book in the series but it is standalone...

The blurb itself says it nicely, about what you're in for when you read this. Vince and Sienna met when Vince ran out of gas and ended up at Sienna’s doorstep. It’s a friends to lovers story; not the childhood friends type, but more like a relationship built on friendship.

Sienna is a book blogger, interestingly enough; a h too familiar on one hand and not so much on the other. Vince is a member of Selected Sinners MC, “debt collector” by “trade”, a true loner, and avid reader to boot. So in a roundabout way, it’s a match made in heaven.

This is more introspective than I expected. I got to see a bit of Vince’s MC lifestyle but this is not about the MC at all. This is about Vince and his thoughts on life and love, learning to love again, that is. This is about Sienna just wanting to find the right kind of love. She didn't necessarily have the happiest of life, not quite meager but certainly lacking. It felt lonely and melancholic, almost tragic. Outside her book blogging, there didn't seem much that drive her or make her happy, until she met Vince, that is. I admit Sienna and her book blogging ways are strange only because I don’t blog that way, but I can easily imagine one of my fellow bloggers going thru the process she goes thru, glug-glug… hah!

Sienna was such as an easygoing h with no melodrama and a lot of sense of humor, melike! Vince, I don’t get to read a lot of H like him. He’s a total introvert. He's got his own sense of humor which got me chuckling a few times. He’s quite an odd duck, and he himself recognizes that. He’s quite the romantic but not in a cheesy rolling-my-eyes way. He’s quite jaded and closed off due to past experiences so when he opened up, it’s like being handed a gift.

This is an even-paced story that focused on the relationship building. It’s about examining emotions and its impact. No extreme highs… it’s about seeing them in their respective worlds, it’s about seeing them getting to know each other better… As a matter of fact, I was really liking it, savoring each page and enjoying seeing things thru each other’s lenses. And for an erotic romance, dare I say, that there aren't too many smexy scenes, but you know what, each of those scenes drove the story, which I appreciated more.

Where the book lost me a bit were the parts that felt superfluous like some of the details of Sienna’s book blogging world, or some parts that felt conveniently resolved but that’s just probably me looking for some angst. And I think my biggest gripe was the conflict that drove the climax of the story. This is all personal take, of course. It felt a tad shallow. Believe me, I get it, but it didn’t mean that I agreed with it. I didn’t understand Sienna’s reactions initially but I eventually did. She was made a bigger person in my mind because it showed how she truly understood Vince. I guess I didn't get Vince as well as Sienna did or I thought I did. But Vince who turned into this sanctimonious prick redeemed himself luckily. I suppose in the end, I appreciated seeing the growth in his thought process. And hey, I'm all about the grand gesture, so I say, Vince, you did good!

Also, I do have to give a shout out to Vince’s mom and Bradley. Gotta love em!

Lastly, I gotta say that having had the pleasure of interacting with Scott in an author chat, he’s easily one of the most open, inclusive and generous authors I’ve encountered virtually. And for Scott to write in the genre he’s writing, I think he’s carving out a nice niche for himself with his stories and writing style to make him not just a novelty in a sea of female romance authors. Not bad, not bad at all… (not that anyone cares, just IMO hehe)

Next up on my Scott's read... hmmm, I think Scott recommended Karter... wait, maybe the rest of the Selected Sinners books... decisions, decisions...

REVIEW: Subordination by Katie Ashley

RATING:

Blurb
When Sophie Jameson first became a domme at Club 1740, it was more out of financial necessity than it was for personal pleasure and sexual exploration. But over the years as she rocked her leather corsets and boots while wielding every crop and flogger imaginable, she grew to love the thrill and adulation that her clients brought her. But all along, her path in life and her heart was with a different profession—one she was planning to embark on at the summer’s end.

And then he changed everything. Tall, dark, impossibly built—William was the complete opposite of whatever image a male sub conjured up. After all the subs, Sophie finally felt true lust and desire. Although he was the proud stallion who needed breaking, he became the one to make her break all her rules and let down all her walls.

But it was just supposed to be for that one night, but an accidental encounter days later outside Club 1740’s protected walls had the two seeing each other in a different light—as simply Sophie and William, not Domme and sub. While they should have parted ways, they couldn’t. While they should never have gone back to her place, they did.
And that simple mistake has a serious price for both of them.

Review

As a first Katie read, hmmm… I’d say I like it… As a first domme read, hmmm… I guess it’s ok…

Sophie is a professional domme who met William on her last day at work and ended up running into him outside of work. There’s more a connection there than meets the eye, and just as they’re starting to explore that thing between them, turns out, it’s a small world after all for them.

In my head, I think it’s making a difference that being a domme is just a job for her. Did that translate well in her life? I don’t know. She doesn’t even know herself and never really had to think about it until William came into the picture. William on the other hand is into the lifestyle. He knows what floats his boat. So, I suppose in a way it’s interesting to see how they managed the dynamics between them.

For a BDSM-themed story, I expected more depth. It almost felt a vanilla-ized version, and this is coming from someone who has a low threshold for this theme. And it also felt that the other events that took place subjugated that aspect of their relationship. Had this been more a character study focusing only on their feelings towards each other and what it means to be in that relationship, it would’ve worked better in my head. Seeing that this is all Sophie’s POV, I was actually curious to delve more into William’s mind. After all, there’re not as many stories out there about a male sub.

Now, while that whole aspect on BDSM didn’t quite meet my expectations, the romance of it all and the story as a whole certainly did. I finished it quickly which meant it was an easy read for me. Sophie’s struggles, outside the bedroom, are relatable. She’s straightforward, kind and caring. William is a gentleman and quite adorable. There’s just enough angst and conflict to move the story, decent side characters, and yes, smokin’ times under the sheet, as you might say.

Overall, it’s probably just as well that this is my first domme read, it was a gentle way of breaking me into it. It’s def a good intro to the writing of Katie.

Hope that makes sense…

SUBORDINATION TEASER 2.jpg
Subordination Excerpt

My steps faltered as I did a double take at the sight of what appeared to be a shirtless and shoeless Henry Cavill standing before me. The idea wasn’t entirely far-fetched since we’d had a few celebrities in the club. But as one of the strobe lights flickered to illuminate more of his face, I realized he was just a look-alike. His hair was lighter while his eyes were dark brown, rather than blue.

He was impossibly tall, and I couldn’t help staring at his muscular chest with its dusting of dark hair that led to an oh-so-happy trail that ended at the low hanging waistband of his jeans. He had an aura of importance about him, and I couldn’t help wondering who he was in real life.

He held my gaze for a moment before averting his eyes to the ground. “Good evening, Mistress.”

A submissive? I would have never imagined it in a million years. Even though I knew from my own clients that submissive men weren’t simpering pussies, there was something about this man that screamed dominant. Of course, the fact he was shoeless should have given his sub status away, but he wasn’t wearing a collar. A prime piece of submissive man like this usually belonged to someone. And if he didn’t, he would normally be snatched up by a domme practically before he got through the door, least of all across the dance floor. I couldn’t help wondering what his story was. More than anything, I wondered what it might be like to have a session with him. I so rarely took anyone on outside my usual clients. But it might be something fun for my last night in the club.

To test his true submissiveness, I commanded, “Look at me.”

He jerked his gaze from my boots to meet mine. “Are you looking to play tonight?”

“Yes, I am. And if it pleases you, mistress, I would be honored if you chose me.”

His voice. Sweet Jesus, was it was panty-melting. It totally went with his body—strong, firm, and deep. Although he had answered my question well, I still had my doubts. With all the strength I had, I reached out to firmly slap his cheek. The resounding smack echoed around us. A man playing at being a sub would have a distinct reaction. His eyes would darken with the rage seething within him at being treated so disrespectfully.

Oh, but not him. His face remained impassive. Yet at the same time, he shuddered, and his dark eyes flashed with a combustive mix of lust and desire. His reaction caused moisture to pool between my thighs. He reminded me of our horses back on the farm. He was a spirited stallion who needed a firm hand to break him, and damn me to hell if I didn’t want to be the one to do it.

Wanting to build the anticipation, I patted his cheek where I had previously slapped him. “I’ll think about it.”
“Yes, Mistress.” He bowed his head before backing up.

Damn, someone had truly trained him well. I stepped past him to head to the bar. My mouth had run dry, and I desperately needed a drink.

Prologue
LIFE OFFERS EVERYONE messages. Either unnoticeable or obvious, it’s up to us to pay attention. I didn’t pay attention. Instinct tried to take notice; the world tried to prevent my downfall. I didn’t listen. I’ll forever wonder what would’ve happened if I did pay attention to those messages. Would I have survived? Would I have fallen in love? Would I have been happy? Then again, perhaps just like messages existed, fate existed, too. And no matter what life path we choose, fate always has the final say. I didn’t listen but it doesn’t mean I didn’t live. I just lived a different tale than the one I’d envisioned. Away from my home. Away from my family. Away from everything comfortable and familiar. But I wasn’t alone… I was with him. And he became my entire universe.

Excerpt

(WARNING: Graphic words/language)

“I’m going to remember this as the worst time in my entire life. The very worst.” She shook her head. “There is nothing I can do to change that. Girls my age are playing sports, going to dances and parties, kissing boys. And that’s never been me. I’ve had a full time job at the grove and a part time job at the Stop-N-Shop. I’ve done nothing over the last few years except work my a$$ off and watch my family fall apart. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse…now all this.” She waived around to the house and to me and let out an awkward laugh. She took another hit off the bowl, passing it back to me. Her coughing much less than it was on her first try.

“Ti, how old are you?” I asked, clearing my throat as I ventured into territory I knew I shouldn’t. She was a pistol, even if she was a sad one, but there was a wave of innocence about her that had me both feeling bad for her and salivating for a taste of her.

This is for her, not you. I told myself. It was only a partial lie.

“Seventeen,” She said, sniffling. “Eighteen soon.”

“You ever been kissed?” I asked, her eyes met mine. “And not a peck on the cheek or a brief smack of the lips, but a real f*cking kiss? One that leaves you without air in you lungs and your thighs pressing together in search of more?” I said, my voice coming out deep and strained. My c*ck coming alive at the thought of tracing my tongue along her pump lips.

“Why?” She whispered, and as soon as the words left her mouth I knew there would be no coming back from what I was about to do.

... I tipped her chin up and looked into her confused emerald greens. She followed my thumb with her eyes as I traced her bottom lip. There were too many lines marring her face, questioning what it was I was up to. I knew she would try to pull away at any second, try to stop me. But it was too late for that.

I was beyond stopping.

Just one taste.

“Answer the question,” I pressed.

“No,” she said with a slight shake of her head, and before she could try to argue, I leaned down and pressed my lips to hers.

I was already going to hell.

Might as well enjoy the ride there.

Review
RATING:

Well, well… we finally got Bear’s story, yes!!!

What an emotional, brutal, violent, hot read! Yup, I think that sums it up for me…

If you’re a fan of the series, you know what Bear went thru. This is seeing Bear dealing with the aftermath of a vicious event. And seeing more of Bear’s past.

One circumstantial event had a young Bear and Thia met. Fast forward… in bks 1&2, you’ve seen what’s become of Bear, and here, you see more. Now, Thia, poor, poor Thia… a small-town girl who had to grow up really fast. Put them together and you get 2 broken souls, 2 broken souls who found what they want and need in each other.

There was no sugarcoating anything here. I wanted to hurl a few times but such is their story in all its brutal honesty. Amidst the cruelty of life and misfortune, a connection is born, which makes for an intense connection.

What took away half a rating is all on me, being impatient; feeling like it’s a whole book of setup for what I’m sure will be an explosive conclusion to Bear and Thia’s story. I also got to see more of Bear’s past but again, the impatient me felt I’ve seen enough of Bear’s past in bks 1&2 albeit in King’s eyes. What did make it up in my head is the way TM hooks me in with her ending. And that sneak peek into bk 4, Soulless! BIG gasp!!!

The finale to Bear and Thia's epic love story.

SUBORDINATION TEASER 2.jpg
Subordination Excerpt
(WARNING: Graphic words/language)

In the distance, a figure crested the hill on his way down from the mountain. Something about the man appeared familiar. Over the years of running at the park, I was used to seeing fellow running acquaintances. But as the incredibly built man grew nearer, my stomach lurched. Oh no, this wasn’t possible. I couldn’t literally be running into someone I’d been in a scene with the night before. In the five years I’d worked at 1740, I had never, ever run into a client.

We were within a few feet of each other when he gave a complimentary nod of hello. Then he literally skidded to a stop, sending bits of gravel flying around us. Just as I started to pass him, acknowledgement of who I truly was flashed on his face.

F****CK I screamed in my head. With everything I had in me, I raced ahead.

“Mistress Juliette?” he called.

Those two little words from his mouth send me tripping over a limb. As I sprawled onto the ground, my knees bumped along the uneven terrain. Once I came to a stop, pain raged all through my body, although it was excruciatingly centralized in my right ankle.

I rolled into a sitting position and brought my hand to my tennis shoe. “F*ck,” I muttered. It was to address both the pain and the fact that a shadow had crossed over me. A bulky shadow belonging to the only sub I had ever let myself go with.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry, Mistress.”

My gaze spun wildly around the clearing. “Stop calling me that!” I hissed.

“I’m sorry. Are you all right?”

Damn, that voice of his. Momentarily forgetting my ankle, I could feel myself growing wet just from the deep timbre, not to mention how sexy his concern was.

“No, actually, I’m not.” I jerked my gaze from my foot up to his handsome face. “My ankle is throbbing like a mother f*cker, not to mention I’m mortified as hell I just busted my a$ right in front of you.”

The corners of his lips fluttered, and I could tell he was fighting the urge not to laugh at me. Without a word, he knelt down beside me. “Let me take a look.”

I jerked my foot away from his overeager hands, which caused me to wince from the pain. “I think you’ve done enough already.”

Cocking his dark brows at me, he said, “My mistress’s health and well-being is always my upmost concern.”

I fought the urge to smack him and not so he could get off on it. “Here’s a newsflash for you. We are not in 1740 anymore, Toto, so this whole sub taking care of his mistress bullsh*t isn’t going to fly.”

“I’m not in to dog play,” he countered, with a wink.

“Yeah, well, last time I checked, you’re not sporting my collar, so I’m not your mistress.”

“Ouch, you really bring out the claws when you’re hurting, don’t you?” When I opened my mouth to lay into him again, he brought a finger over my lips. “Quit your b!tching, and let me check out your ankle, okay?”

“Are you a doctor or paramedic in real life?”

He smiled, causing those delicious dimples of his to pop out. “No, not quite.”

“Then how do I know you’re actually qualified to look at my ankle and not just wanting to cop a feel of my foot?”

With a chuckle, he replied, “Don’t have a foot fetish either.”

As he slid my tennis shoe off, I hissed. “Answer the question.”

“Easy now,” he murmured.

“What qualifies you to look at my ankle?” I demanded.

“I used to be a football coach.”

“Professional?”

He laughed. “No, high school.”

“Oh,” I murmured.

“Yeah, you bandage at least one sprained ankle every game.” He glanced up at me. “Yours doesn’t feel sprained, but it’s definitely swollen. I have a first aid kit in my truck. I can bandage it for you.”

I eyed him suspiciously. As a submissive, I knew he truly subscribed to the code of conduct that his mistress always came first. But we weren’t in the club, and although club management did background checks that rivaled the FBI, he was still a stranger to me. Well, a stranger who I’d seen naked and bent over a spanking horse.

Knowing that I didn’t really have a choice, I huffed out a frustrated breath. “Okay, fine. I’ll let you take care of my ankle.”

“Try not to sound so excited about it, okay?” William said with a teasing expression.
